My mom is a very religious person while I'm not. I'm fine with some religion, but I don't want a preachy movie. She's the type to like lifetime movies and such.
I don't really watch movies but I watch anime like Attack on Titan, but movies like Hunger Games are cool for me too. She doesn't like violence though, so I'd prefer a movie geared towards her.
We've watched the greatest showman and Qu'est-ce qu'on a fait au Bon Dieu? and absolutely loved them.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Preferably something funny. Thank you for any answers!
Sorry, no Christmas movies since she doesn't believe in it đ
Princess bride
That anyone would not like The Princess Bride would be inconceivable.
a cult classic for Christians
That's actually perfect - it's got the fairy tale romance your mom would probably love but also the witty humor and adventure that'll keep you entertained. Plus zero preachy stuff and the "violence" is so over-the-top it's basically comedy
Paddington 1 and 2. Literally Paddington 2 ranks as one of the critically best liked movies of all time.
It looks interesting, I'll definitely keep it on my radar thanks! But my mom has a stigma against cartoons, would you happen to know anything maybe geared more towards adults while being ok to watch with my mom?
It's only the bear that's animated, and relatively realistically animated.
He means the live action Paddington.
Peter rabbit is entertaining also.
They're not cartoons. They're excellent family films with an animated characterÂ
Harry and the Hendersons
Holy shit that brings back memories
YAAASSSS!!!
My Big Fat Greek Wedding
+1 for this! Took my former mother in law who sounds a lot like your Mom to see this when it came out and she talked about it for months.
Secondhand Lions, Goonies
I would have suggested both of these.
CODA
This was a great one to watch with my dad. Very emotional and heartwarming!!
Harvey! We watched it with my grandma when I was a kid. Itâs about Jimmy Stewart imagining a six foot tall rabbit friend, and it was sweet and heartwarming fun. Donât sleep on it.Â
Harvey is still such a great movie! Frank Capra has other great movies too outside of Itâs A wonderful Life like Arsenic and Old Lace, It Happened One Night and Mr. Smith Goes To Washington.
Imagining?! You take that back!
Lol to be fair I havenât seen it since and that was 30 years ago so memory is a little crusty. Time for a rewatch!
Pee Wee's Big Adventure. Not too violent, pretty modest in terms of violence and sex, has a terrifying trucker ghost, wholesome ending. Fun!
Big with Tom Hanks St Vincent
Beasts of the Southern Wild
Topsy Turvy
Secrets and Lies
Mermaids
A League of Their Own
A Little Chaos
Nonnas. It has heart and laughs.
Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris.
Young Woman and the Sea and The Boys in the Boat are a couple of years old. They are both sports dramas so not as much humor but nice period pieces.
Thelma (2024) - When 93-year-old Thelma Post falls victim to a phone scam, she sets out to find the perpetrators with the help of her grandson and a friend.
Nanny McPhee. Great acting. Great story. Have tissues handy.
To clarify, happy tears. Really happy tears!
Patch Adams! It's one of Robin Williams jems. It's based on a true story about a doctor who tries to help his patients with laughter.
Big fish is great
Stan & Ollie
It's well done, everyone involved with making and acting in the film clearly love Laurel and Hardy. It's based on actual events in their lives, and it's really funny!
This looks really interesting! Might be my first pick, thank you!
Glad to hear!
Coincidentally, I watched it with my mom a few days, she loved it. Granted, I grew up watching old Laurel and Hardy movies with my mom, so we know who they are. But even if you didn't, I still think the recent movie would be enjoyable, as it's so well done.
Harry and the Hendersons??
Saving Mr Banks
Iron Giant
Jumanji
Bridge to Taribithia if you wanna cry
That Thing You Do
About Time.
It's sentimental without being maudlin, everyone I've ever recommended it to has loved it
The Truman Show
Itâs A Wonderful Life
Thank you for the suggestion, I'll definitely try to watch it before Christmas is over! Do you have any suggestions for relatively more recent films though?
The Intern (Starring Anne Hathaway and Robert DeNiro).
I really like Klaus (2019), it has a religious vibe with good deeds etc. but overall just a fun film for Christmas to watch
Are You There God?\ Singin' In The Rain\ Moonrise Kingdom\ Some Like it Hot\ Argo\ King Of The Hill, 1993\ Rise of the Planet of the Apes\ Modern Times
Damn I was gonna recommend Everything everywhere all at once. My mom is hardcore Bible thumper, even teaches Sunday school every Sunday. She absolutely loved it. She found it fun, it really was fun for the whole family.
I could definitely see some super duper religious freak, find some reach, that itâs âanti Christianâ or something though. So maybe be careful with that one. My momâs reaction may not be the same as yours. As she is a hardcore Christian but Sheâs a hippie at heart.
I doubt a hardcore conservative Christian is going to be okay with watching the buttplug fight, with their child....
My mom is exactly that though. She thought it was funny đ€·ââïž
It depends on the person, not necessarily their political views or religion.
Chaplin is really good.
Muriel's Wedding & Mamma Mia!
Chicken Run
Moonlight
Iâm gonna go on a limb and say the homosexual love story and child abuse will be a no go. One of my favorite movies and made me cry like a baby, but not right for OPâs Mom.
Unless this is a sarcastic reco?
I really love Fighting with my FamilyÂ
It's a little raunchy and pretty dumb but it's very sweet. I should add I made my parents watch it and they didn't like it all that much though lol
Secondhand Lions or Blast From the Past.
Hugo
Thelma (2023) - with June Squibb
Lars and the Real Girl
It Could Happen to You
Lars is an âinterestingâ suggestion
If they can get past the girlfriendâs âbackgroundâ, I think the rest of the movie is fairly wholesome, haha.
Christopher Robin with Ewan McGregor.
Klaus was very good. Animated film and not preachy at all but a good moral message.
Pixar movies, or Studio Ghibli films if she can accept spirits and magic as just fantastical elements and allegorical instead of labeling them as Satanic.
Wizard of Oz
Blues Brothers
Based on the examples you gave I think the two if you would enjoy for example:
Princess Bride
Signs
Super 8
Secondhand Lions
On Golden Pond?
A River Runs Through It?
Both of these are about family!
The Artist (2011). It was very popular, well-liked movie when it came out. It is PG13 rated. It is silent black/white movie.
Babe and the sequel are good for family viewing
Maybe a Woody Allen film like Midnight in Paris or Magic in the Moonlight
Joe Vs. The Volcano is good.
or Grease.
Something old like Lost Horizon or The Music Man might be nice.
13 going on 30
Mrs Harris goes to Paris
101 Dalmatians (1997)
Hook (1991)
Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris (2022)
Ratatouille (2007)
You could try some of the Disney movies from the 1960s, like Pollyanna.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
older movies like Room for One More (cary grant),Â
Hunt for the Wilderpeople
I guess the goonies would work. At the risk of sounding like a heathen, it was never my favorite but it has a very loyal fan base.
Awesome choice!
For Richer or Poorer (1997) starring Tim Allen and Kirstie Alley.
Dora and the Lost City of Gold
Blurs Brothers is the greatest catholic musical ever. A story about 2 degenerates that are inspired in a church to save their catholic orphanage and only succeed by the grace of God.
While You Were Sleeping Miss Congeniality
Canât go wrong with Sandra Bullock in this kind of situation.
Although Princess Bride was my first choice, I think she might enjoy Miss Potter.
Ink Heart, Stardust, Prince of Persia
