So I usually go for Hallmark and Lifetime kind of Christmas movies.
However I'm really not in the mood this year so I'd love to get some recommendations for Christmas movies with families that suck or people who hate Christmas.
Can end up romantic but it's better if it doesn't.
The Holdovers
Four Christmases
I recently watched this one and liked it :)
Family Stone
This is kind of the perfect one for somebody in the opposite of a holiday spirit seeking out a family and/or characters that suck.
Watched for the first time this weekend, think I might honestly hate it, but yet I didn’t think about turning it off once.
Just Friends (2005)
Trading Places, kind of
from 2023?
No it’s an old movie with Eddie Murphy. It’s very funny! Last I checked, Tubi had it.
Great, thank you :)
The Night Before
from 2015?
Sorry - yep!
Thank you very much :)
Four Christmases, Christmas with the Kranks.
Christmas with the Krancks
Jingle All the Way (1996)
Um... A functioning jet pack? A pack of angry Santas having a gang fight?
Sinbad gets my vote all day, every day.
Office Christmas Party
The Ref! Dark and funny.
from 1994?
Yes. With Denis Leary. Its my favorite Christmas movie.
Nice, thank you :)
Family Stone
Christmas Eve at Miller's Point might be what you're looking for. It's not about people who outright hate Christmas but does explore the complex family dynamics that can come out around the holidays. Its set during a large suburban extended family Christmas Eve Party set in the early 2000s. A bit plotless and has a fly on the wall approach of the story. It really captures the feel of a family get together, both the happy and melancholic.

It's a good one but I have watched it too often 🙃

Terrible is a bit harsh for mine but they're not good for sure.
Love the Coopers (2015) - literally no one is happy in this movie. Great cast!
Home for the Holidays (1995) - OK it’s a Thanksgiving movie but plays just like a Christmas movie. Outstanding turns from Anne Bancroft and, what, Steve Gutenberg!?
Love, Actually (2003) - Mostly a bunch of louts and jerks. No one is happy. Shocking how popular it is given the actual plot lines, I think it’s the British accents.
lol I love your descriptions.
It's the accents for sure but even then the Holiday would win :)
Yup I love Love Actually!!
A Merry Friggin’ Christmas (2014)
A Christmas Tale (2008)
or check out @ Its Just Cinema youtube shorts 12 days of christmas for other recommendations on alternative holiday films.
I always recommend my favorite movie that is set between Christmas & New Years: While You Were Sleeping. It is a romantic comedy (sorry, not sorry) but with so much humor & heart, a perfectly imperfect family, & it shows the loneliness of those who don’t have any family and how Christmas isn’t a merry time for everyone.
Only watched it once but maybe it's time for a rewatch :)
The Family Man and Christmas with the Kranks
The Ref.
Oh I almost forgot…you wanted families (neighbors, bosses) that suck? You’re looking for National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. Another one of our favorites!
Yes, exactly thank you :)
Surviving Christmas
Trapped in Paradise
Bad Santa
Scrooged
Home Alone
Krampus
Silent Night
Silent Night 2021 or 2023?
2021
great thank you :)
You're welcome
Christmas Eve with George Raft
The new "Oh. What. Fun." was kinda like this.
Bad Santa and The Family Stone
Die Hard

Somebody is grouchy.
From Google: "My One Christmas Wish" (2015), based on a true story, where a lonely college student posts a genuine ad to "rent" a family for the holiday, receiving sincere responses and finding connection. While other movies mention Craigslist (like the darker "The Craigslist Killer"), My One Christmas Wish is the heartwarming holiday film centered around a Craigslist post for family during Christmas."
A Very Harold And Kumar Christmas (2011)
