Hi folks, I hope to get here few thrilling movie recommendations, wich I can watch with my mum. The movie should not be gore at all, but still damn thrilling and intense af.
To give you few mum-compatible examples: Incendies, Prisoners: psychologically brutal, but generally not gore.
What does not work is e.g. Oldboy (great one, but to gore)
Edit: Great suggestions! Thank you all so much!
The Prestige
Barton Fink
Arrival
Primal Fear - 1996 Richard Gere and Ed Norton. Trust me.
I came to say this. 🙌
The Game
Gone Girl (I wouldn't say it's gory, but there are some violent scenes)
If for some reason she has never seen The Sixth Sense, that would be a great one.
The Others
The Village
Knives Out
A Beautiful Mind
The Game
memento, the usual suspects, the big lebowski, snatch, ex machina.
DON'T watch the big lebowski with your mum...
The Usual Suspects
Lots of gun violence but not gory.
Seconded - not too gory , but fowl language !
Predestination staring Ethan Hawke.
Idk why but I had a wall up throughout this whole movie and still loved it. I think I just expected it to fall apart at some point but considering the plot, I think they handled it well.
No Way Out (Kevin Costner)
Most Nolan movies would probably fit the bill, but some can be a bit too complex and end up just being confusing. I'd suggest Memento and The Prestige. Obviously there's Fight Club, not sure if that's too much gore or not. My personal favorite is Red Lights. Surprisingly unknown for having Cillian Murphy, Sigourney Weaver, Robert De Niro, and Elizabeth Olsen. It's not well rated but I love it. Also I adore Shutter Island and I can't recommend it enough. A few others worth mentioning, Knives Out, Now You See Me, Arrival, Unbreakable, Ex Machina, and A Beautiful Mind. There's so many others but I'll spend all day listing them. Mind-fuck/plot twist movies are my favorite kind.
Wait Until Dark, one of the most tense psychological thrillers ever. My dad likes to tell the story that when it played in theaters, you could stand outside the door and tell when it got to a specific scene near the end by everyone screaming in unison.
Grand Torino featuring Clint Eastwood
Not an insane plot twist though? Just a good twist of a tale
Usual Suspects
The Thomas Crowne Affair (either version)
The knives out movies. I am a horror film nerd but I found those really entertaining and cosy.
Sorry to bother you!
That's okay
Thats the movie "sorry to bother you"

Taking Lives comes to mind
Not so much of a plot twist, but definitely thrilling:
Victoria (2015) - amazingly shot in one take
Run Lola Run (1998)
Memento (2000)
The Caller has the craziest plot twist. It is an older movie from 1987 so your mum might enjoy it
Get Out
The Game/Michael Douglas
Tenet is super fun, mind bending and has a sick plot twist that's not hard to pick up. Highly recommend
Jacob's Ladder (1990)
I just watched the 2024 movie Relay and was totally blown away by the ending…never saw it coming.
Witness for the prosecution. Don't Google it.
Elizabeth Harvest is an underappreciated but top-notch gem that keeps twisting to the very end. (There's blood but I don't recall if it reaches "gore" 🤔)
Million Dollar Baby
RedEye (2005)
Leap Year
The Adjustment Bureau
The Invisible Guest (Spanish, get subtitles if you can)
Antoine Fuqua's remake of the Magnificent Seven maybe?
Spike Lee's Inside Man
BlackKklansman
All The Money In The World
Hell or High Water
Arlington Road
Panic Room
- Shutter Island
- The Crying Game
- The Others
- Snatch
Charlie St. Cloud. Not insane, but a good watch for mums.
The Sixth Sense
The Village
Ernest Scared Stupid
Primal Fear!!
Wait.... You thought Incendies was good to watch with your mum!?
Sleuth (1972)
12 Monkeys
Marathon Man (1976) as long as you and your mother aren’t afraid of the dentist lol
You may like, Baby Driver. Not a huge twist at the end but still thrilling.
As crazy as it is, it may be Edgar Wright’s most serious film. Though I love his work otherwise also.
Idk if it’s so strong as an insane plot twist movie but its an entertaining ride no doubt!
