I don't usually post about the weather, but are we really about to get hit out of nowhere? I follow forecasts and saw nothing to hint that over seven inches of snow is on the way. Updraft Blog was updated twice yesterday and only hinted at some light snow mostly in Wisconsin.
There were signs Thursday night but they were forecasting freezing rain and light snow. Gradually changed to a huge snow storm.
I think there ended up being a lot more moisture than they thought so that’s gonna feed the system.
Seeing some murmurs of a potential dry slot now so lots of uncertainty with this one.
Where do you go for murmurs like this?
Bo Knows Weather on X or Blue Sky was the source of that. One of the many MSP meteorologist I follow.
Never heard of Bo. Of the meteorologists you follow, do you have one you like more than others? To me, 24 hours out from a winter storm, they're all about the same, so it's their delivery style I'm drawn to.
Hmm I would say Paul Huttner overall. I like his writing style and his on air personality. He was also my gateway to local weather. Sven is a close second.
I like Paul a lot as well. I also like Jonathan Yuhas a lot.
Every time I go to my hometown, the weather tries to trap me.
Reminded me of The Gear Daddies song “Heavy Metal Boys.”
Me too. Except it’s always hurricanes. Been in like every major hurricane in Houston and I don’t live there full time 🤣
Well, I better go get milk and bread.
I got some Blanton's for Christmas so I'm all set.
yeah my gifted craft beer stockpile will keep me nice n cozy.
p.s. i’ll be over to yours after the storm for some of that pony bourbon!
Gotta have your taters ready
Exactly! What will you do if you get snowed in without a nice slice bread washed down with an ice cold glass of milk?!
It's called breakfast. Milk with cereal and toast with butter.
Will you also be making milk sandwiches, neighbor?
Yep, my frozen pizza and donut supply are getting low.
You’re from the southeast aren’t you?
What's coming!? When?
6-8 inches of snow. Tomorrow.
I’m flying in around 11 so that’s just perfect lol. Hope I don’t get stuck in the air
What goes up, must come down.
Spinning wheel, got to go ‘round.
Ride the painted pony let the spinnin’ wheel spin

🛫🤗🛬
I got a good chuckle out of this. Thank you! 😂
🤪 best compliment I can get.
With strong winds, so expect blizzard conditions.
What? I'm picking folks up at the airport at 2. Hope their flight is able to land.
Eh. I think in the city we’re maaaaaybe going to get like 4” max. It seems like all the “massive snowstorm” forecasts have yielded some pretty wimpy actual accumulation. We have a heat island in the city, and a bunch of tall buildings that break up straight line winds.
Are you a meteorologist?
So sick of people who know nothing passing opinions on forecasts from actual professionals.
I really like the local NWS office write ups for these events.
If you’re into meteorology at all also check out the forecast discussion Definitely more high level terminology, but cool to get a human side to it.
I have a meteorology degree actually! I read those as well :)
I frequent r/meteorology and saw someone mention how much math & physics is required for the degree. Congrats to you on being smart! lol
These are my favorite. Sometimes there’s even a little humor and you learn a lot about how they decide the forecast.
One thing is they’ve been running the Euro AI models for a few months and they’ve largely been more accurate for snowfall than the deterministic models and the AI models are a little more conservative on the snowfall amounts.
HUMAN SIDE?🤣So....they put their "human spin" on the "narrative"? Meteorology went OUT THE WINDOW a LONG TIME AGO when they decided to start modifying/creating the weather by means of geo-engineering ALL OVER THE WORLD🤣 They literally fill a 5 minute space with absolute BS on the evening news🙄Carry on.....
This is so cool. Where do you find this?
It's located here on the upper right
I hunted around and found this. Mpls. is mpx.
Best and only way to get decent forecasts.
Kare11 Saturday acknowledged this—they said it was only the most recent runs that hinted at large snowfall amounts
John on the KARE11 morning news has been talking about snow on Sunday since the middle of the week.
They were talking a small event earlier in the week. Jaimie Kagol said the model runs from the last 12 hours moved it from 1-2” into that 3-8” range for the metro (more northeast, less southwest )
I’m only saying what John has been saying on the morning news. For sure the predicted accumulation amounts has gone up a little, but even earlier this week he was talking about the possibility of 6”+ in some areas of the metro.
Love John! He's become my favorite weather person.
Same!
“Out of nowhere”
Sir, it’s winter in Minnesota. You must be new here.
Out of nowhere as in not forecasted
Not out of nowhere, the snow amounts have just increased over the last two days.
I had a road trip to the UP planned for tomorrow thru Tues, so I'm doing my part in summoning this thing. Rescheduling the trip for the second time this season!
I had planned to drive to Madison tomorrow so it's my fault too.
Doing our part! I was actually going to go to the UP for the snow (xc skiing), but don't really want to get stuck out there. I hope you can reschedule your plans!
Thanks! Fortunately I can reschedule. Hopefully we get some snow for you to ski here as well! I love the UP; my stepdad's family has a cabin and we spent a lot of time in the Houghton area as a kid.
Tomorrow is the first day this month I get to stay home. Thank you for your service.
I felt the same way! I read updraft and like to track the weather and nothing until this winter storm watch this morning. Wild!
I bought tickets last night to the arboretum’s holiday lights on Sunday. Good times.
Agreed it seems like a shorter notification period than usual. Variety of services are indicating a high probability of precipitation & below freezing temperatures in that time frame. The predicted drop in temperature may have been forecasted with greater lead time.
Frankly a coating of snow of any reasonable amount seems like a better outcome than having things glazed over with ice. We'll see what shows up.
The heavy winds with temp drop was predicted for a good while. That’s still happening but with measurable snow now - so now we’ll have whiteout conditions and slippery roads added on.
Usually the NWS forecast discussions catch stuff but they also didn’t start talking about it until the 3am post this morning and they had a lot of catching up to do.
If you were warned about it…that pretty much means it wasn’t “out of nowhere”.
weather forecasters are telling you it’s coming
Usually they tell you a few days in advance that a storm is possible, but even meteorologists are saying their models didn’t really pick up on it until recently
Not sure which sources you use, but my weather app has had it in the forecast for Sunday since Christmas Eve. Both NPR & KARE11 have been talking about it for a few days as well.
Weather beyond 48 hours out is always kind of a guess for the Midwest.
I feel like I look at my weather app and it will say no precipitation for two weeks and then it just starts snowing out of no where, or rain. I assume it’s a Minneapolis thing.
I follow NWS for Duluth and the Twin cities so it's not quite a surprise to me.
Really unfortunate timing. I've been watchin the whole week as I'm coming back from holiday vacation and watching run after run has me wondering if my flight will even be allowed to leave my destination back to MSP. The Accuweather hourly shows 40+mph wind gusts in the evening with hours of snow already done. Starting to think about preparing to be stuck here an extra day.
I got a text alert at 3:36am about a winter storm watch. Whut.
Forecasts change
out of nowhere?
babe its December in Minnesota?
National Weather Service has always said they can only accurately predict about 24 hours in advance.
Trump slashed NWS funding and fired more than 600 meteorologists, so expect decreased reporting quality.
Check out Ryan Hall yall on YouTube! They have great content and very detailed storm tracking and updates if you want to nerd out.
Neat! Thanks for the suggestion.
Max velocity is a good watch if you like weather too.
I got a NWS warning yesterday, so not sure that's really out of nowhere. My weather app has showed 4" and down to single digits on Sunday for a few days.
Maybe you need more diversity of sources?
Classic forecast windshield wiper effect. I had 1-3 yesterday so seeing enhanced probabilities for 6+ is quite a change.
Dunno, Wunderground had 4+ at 8 last night.
Welcome to Minnesota during climate change. Also, I can really tell this year that we have fewer weather balloons and less NWS funding. Thanks a lot Elon.
I bought a snowblower a couple weeks ago and figured I ruined winter. Looks like I'll get to try it out!
Nah, if you put gas in it then you ruined winter. it will just be rain to ice. No snow.
Hardly out of nowhere.
It was my fault. Sorry
Krampus Cat is angry and has a new post holiday gig of dumping snow on people for not reading forecasts and buying new shovels?
Yes, it’s late December
I was only just informed that we are gonna get hit with 9-11 inches of snow?! Like what the fuck from where? I just hope it doesn’t start with rain…I don’t need my alley to be a damn ice rink again like early winter 2023.
I'm afraid that's exactly what's going to happen 😑
A could days ago the forecast called for a few inches. It must have been updated as it got closer.
almost like forecasts change or something
I live in southern Washington county which takes about 40 minutes to drive top to bottom. I’ve found the forecast by county to be frustrating. I just need my own Doppler lol
Not quite out of nowhere- warm weather often precedes storm systems. Winter or summer
My wife said she got an alert on her phone, but I can't find any info online saying Hennepin county is getting hit with anything
Try the NWS point forecast. This one is set for downtown. It can get neighborhood specific by clicking different areas.
https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lon=-93.269&lat=44.976
It's on the NWS site https://www.weather.gov/mpx/
Also news sites had the early predictions on 15 hours ago even early predictions. We will likely get it starting Monday morning.
https://www.fox9.com/weather/minnesota-weather-what-expect-sundays-snow.amp
That Fox9 link is outdated now, they’ve got it closer to the 3-6” range now for the metro for Sunday morning through Sunday night
Yup. I know that. I wrote when I posted an hour ago that ..... "early predictions on 15 hours ago...".
The point of th Fox News post in Addison to the NWS link was to show that it's been predicted awhile as the person I was replying to said thy didn't see anything for Hennepin county.
I've been following the ECMWF & GFS and both have been predicting this for several days. Not really coming out of nowhere. Temps will drop tonight an expect it to hit around 10am
I wouldn’t say it’s “out of nowhere”. Fox 9 meteorologists have been talking about it for a few days now.
I'll believe it when I see it.
Whenever an alert like this comes up, I am cautiously optimistic like always. I'd love it for the 3-5 slated for tomorrow morning and another 3-5 in the evening hours. It does feel out of nowhere though, I agree with that.
