This is what I keep saying. Our allies fought and died with us in a war that had nothing to do with them. They answered the call without question and to turn around and threaten them is a completely disrespectful and just a smack in the face. This administration needs to be impeached, removed and imprisoned for all the laws they have broken and the trust broken with our allies.
No. No one will fully trust us again for the time being. They won't know when these stupid voters will vote Dems out and go for a racist dumb ass again. That's on the American voters. Because of millions of people's bad judgement, it will be a long time before anyone trusts us again. 🤷🏾♀️
those workarounds that countries have found to not deal with us, those are permanent. They aren't coming back and taking that chance. I don't think a lot of people realize just how terrible this administration is because they are stuck in their misinfo bubbles, But it's pretty damn terrible. Foreign countries can't bank on the majority not wanting terrible leadership again. Other countries paid more attention and connected the dots than some Americans did concerning trump and that's really damn sad.
I completely agree. That’s why I said “some temporary” - they can never rely on us again because another deranged MAGA Russian asset president is around the corner. Citizens United + social media makes it too easy for foreign adversaries to influence US politicians and voters.
I know you said that. That time has passed. We had a chance to move on after Biden, but you know what happened.
Because of that, we won't be trusted for a long time because no country will be able to trust the American voter. Major countries will not deal with us again. We went from a crazy dude to a normal dude to a crazy dude that got more crazier. They can't count on that. So that trust will be gone for a long time, Democrat or not. We had our chance. Like Billions are on the line they not gonna deal with us flip flopping all over the place.
It’s not. It will all be reversed once Trump is out of office. They know Trump is a clown. They won’t hold it against us once someone who has some sense gets in and starts to undo all the bullshit.
You're giving the US way too much credit. Trump getting elected once? You could explain that away as a fluke. Trump getting elected a second time even after seeing the outcome of the first time? We're only a year into round two and it'll already take decades to undo the damage.
Even if Trump were to be removed from office, the US has already lost a great deal of trust among its allies. It will take decades to repair that damage. But the road to hell is paved and the US is rolling downhill.
I haven't served (I'm blind) but several members of my family have. My brother is adamant that attacking a NATO ally, especially one who "served beside them in the sandbox," would be a line most US soldiers wouldn't cross.
I hope he's right. He's pretty pissed off that it's even something that needs asking.
He’s right. Any service member in the U.S. knows that you don’t attack your allies. Annexing Greenland? He’s literally becoming Putin but in a much shorter time.
We like you, the problem is that the word of the people isn’t the word of the government. Young men die so old men can get rich and those are sadly the reality of war and world conflicts. I personally appreciate all of our foreign allies but idk what there is to do
Empires don't die overnight, it's death by a thousand cuts. Destabilized economy, torn social fabric, polarized politics, distanced allies, hubris of invincibility.
Can you blame Denmark for the response? We would do the very same if some foreign dictator threatened to invade the US or one of the territories.
As an American veteran, I agree with Denmark’s position. They have a legal right defend their territory, although it turns out that, by treaty, the U.S. has a ‘right’ to station troops, build bases, airfields, etc.
I don’t know if the treaty can be unilaterally abrogated. If so, Denmark should abrogate it.
We do have the ability more so than the right but usually all of that is handled diplomatically with the country receiving some kind of compensation but to straight up threatened to “Annex” an ally is nuts.
Or.... The fact that we're talking about Greenland instead of Epstein is precisely the goal.
Look at Maduro's abduction and the subsequent Oil talk: what substantial move has been done to take over Venezuela, or even to leverage policy? The embargo alone won't cut it.
Greenland topic simply follows the same logic: Dominate the news on your own terms, flood the air waves in a manner that nobody will talk about your scandals.
“I went to Greenland to try to buy it,” Dryden Brown tweeted [in November ’24]. Brown, 28, is the CEO of a company called Praxis, which is part of a broader movement known as the Network State. Network Staters say they want to create a host of privately funded, crypto-friendly countries all around the world. Zealots of this ideology believe they’re building the future, but critics of the movement see it as little more than a bizarre neo-colonial effort to lay claim to existing countries, re-write their legal frameworks, and extract all the wealth and resources from them. Brown actually did travel to Greenland [in ’24] to talk to local officials about potentially buying the territory. He was promptly met with ridicule.
NATO has never been stronger, in my opinion. Rus expansion is a clear & present threat.
Whereas current criminal regime is not the only North American member of NATO.
Send the toddler home with its “ballroom”.
Agreed. I think the other kids at the table are more concerned and committed to the table than they have been in my adult life -but we won't be at the table for much longer
Why would he push so hard for higher Nato member defense spending if it’s always been his goal? It’s a few different directions of dumb in the admin right now (5% defense spending isnt a dumb one, though)
My guess is that he thought other countries would fail to meet the goal and drop out or it would weaken political parties pushing to maintain the NATO alliance. Wait, I mean he's just a useful fucking idiot and the shitty think-tanks behind all of this were aiming to weaken NATO.
That was just my suggestion to the person I replied to. Tensions are high but not everything said on Reddit is serious nor requires an /s. My suggestion was to avoid the whole saber rattling bullshit and just leave nato if it’s so fucking important to do so. Greenland would never agree to such a thing so that would be trumps out. Follow me?
Only thing being is the vast majority of nato countries would say go on the don't let the door hit you in the arse on the way out, and when America gets hit by second 911 type attack America is on its own, plus America will loose all its bases in Europe
I know it's a jest but Holland is the most powerful province in the Netherlands, calling all Dutch Hollandaise would be like calling all Americans New Yorkers.
Well I’ll be damned.. I did not know that, thank you for the correction. I’ve always thought the Netherlands used to sometimes be referred to as “Holland” for some reason… am I misremembering that?
my mom (dutch) once got stopped at customs before entering the US because when the customs agent asked her where she's from she said holland and the agent couldnt believe a dutch person would say that instead of the netherlands, he flipped out at her with "HOLLAND DOESNT EXIST ITS THE NETHERLANDS AND YOU'RE DEFINITELY NOT FROM THERE"
In many languages equivalent of both Netherlands and Holland exist. It's not accurate but it's used quite often abroad. In French for example we have Pays-Bas and Hollande. People living there are néerlandais or hollandais
Probably a good thing you are retired then. You probably would confuse allies with enemies. (No wonder there's always lots of "friendly fire" when US forces are involved.)
With all due respect and from the perspective of a Dane, you should’ve taken to the streets already. Trump is starting unjust wars, the US is threatening its NATO allies, and ICE is killing your fellow citizens. Why wait?
We have had millions of people in the streets repeatedly.
The flooding the streets strategy that works in smaller countries doesn’t work in a nation as massive as the US.
They can just ignore it because millions of people spread across cities in 50 states is not a threat to the regime or the oligarchs.
And our elected officials no long feel accountable to public will. Partly because they gerrymandered so effectively that most are in safe districts, and we are so polarized most are in safe states.
Also the US media is heavily biased. Most videos of the recent ICE shooting are edited, rather than show what really happened.
The ICE agent shot her 3 times as she was moving off, most US news channels have removed the sound from the video footage.
Yeah, it is pretty clear our media is utterly complicit in dismantling of our democratic institutions and the lack of accountability felt by elected and appointed officials, and the oligarchs.
We are aware. A larger problem is that about 40% of the population genuinely seem to want an authoritarian leaning regime. About 30% want Trump to be a dictator.
So even if we are able to get enough political momentum to stop this, we may end up with civil division and potential civil conflict.
Even the most effective insurgencies, or protest movements, have not had “millions of people spread” across entire countries. It’s not about flooding the streets, it’s about causing economic and political consequences through protesting and civil disobedience, which won’t happen because individuals can’t even afford wage losses from not being in work, never mind being criminalised for their protest actions through arrest. Politicians won’t suffer from loss of donations from the people because they are funded by foreign/corporate PACs and wealthy private donors, and there’s this weird tradition of voting based on where someone is from or how their family votes, regardless of the actual politics of the candidates. The 2nd Amendment has been slowly infringed to the point that no arms the people may bear could at all compete with the US government/military in the way that amendment was intended. The media are unwilling to hold government to account because they will have their access/accreditation pulled and that will affect their advertising revenue. The US population has literally lost the means to influence their own government and bend them to their will.
Trump wants nothing more than Americans in the streets setting fires damaging property and potentially hurting others so he can make a play for emergency powers and take even more control and delay elections.
I have family in Minneapolis and the public have been in the streets protecting the Somali community from Trump’s SS. They’ve been in the streets for years (literally) protesting Trump. Global media is only now providing coverage because an ICE murdered a citizen. People are out in the streets nationwide, but it seems inconsequential due to the vastness of this country. And then, people are terrified because our police and ice will swiftly and without consequence, turn the weapon on us. I have lived in a European country for half a decade now and when I hear people from this part of the world make blanket comments about Americans not protesting (which is already untrue), I remind them that their own governments and militaries wouldn’t shoot their own people.
There is already some whispers to send a JEF task force for drills in Greenland. US could probably take it, but a evan a tripwire detachment would make it very costly.
But Americans do care about casualties. If a landing ship ends up on the bottom of the sea together with its troops, I doubt even Trump could explain that to the public.
I mean, what would he even say? That he attacked one of the most reliable and oldest allies of USA? With no provocation or reason? That he sent troops to annex the territory of a NATO ally? And that as a result, American soldiers are coming home in body bags?
Would that finally be insane enough for the majority of the United States, that the Trump presidency would be simply ended, because he belongs in a mental asylum, not in the White House?
it seem very old school colonial act . the people of greenland seem happy with the status quo or at least its better to usa rule and are being totally ignored.
They're happy on their current path to independence, I wouldn't say they're happy being ruled by Denmark either.
But they absolutely will not accept trading one ruling nation for another, especially if the new incumbent ceases their path to independence, which the US would most certainly do.
In fact America used to have numerous bases on Greenland including nuclear weapons ready to launch against the USSR, but the USAF decommissioned them after the Soviet Union collapsed.
Thule USAF base had B52 bombers in the 1960s, loaded with hydrogen bombs.
We had a lot more bases and a nuclear reactor on Greenland. We also had nuclear weapons galore on the island.
I have my doubts that this will come to a military course of action. Trump often says big things to achieve smaller results. My hunch is that there will be an update to the current treaty that will likely expand US rights to precious minerals and for opening additional bases.
If the US decided to go with the military option then it would not only fracture NATO but the US would likely also end Five Eyes sharing, AUKUS and possibly force the United Kingdom to end bilateral treaties. Europe would be eyeing up a decoupling of the US economy and request that all US troops depart Europe. For some people in the US they may feel this does not matter, but the reality is that much of the US's international authority and legitimacy comes from its ability to unite allies. Without that its just power for powers sake.
The military option will lead the world down the path of George Orwell's 1984. Three fortress regions in forever war.
Let's hope some cool sensible heads still exist in US politics and can do more than tweet their opinions to prevent disaster.
Not even the people that voted for Trump voted for this. Although anecdotal, I’ve asked several of my Trump supporting (unfortunately) friends and family what they think about the Greenland rhetoric, and not one approved.
Although I’m just some random dude on Reddit, I’m very confident in saying that most of us understand the mutual value and symbiosis of NATO.
Also, polls are predicting that the 2026 midterm elections here should be a rude awakening for Trump and his minions.
Social Conservativism has been heavily weaponized the past 40 years by an infinitely expanding right wing media apparatus. And several generations of people unable to discern fact from fiction on social media.
MAGA voted for an orange encrusted Bernie Sanders, a supposedly great businessman, or a strongman. Trump somehow managed to con people that he was any of those things.
Midterm elections create a time compression for trump to act on Greenland. At present, the Trump team seems isolated from public opinion, but I hope you are right in that the midterms change the domestic calculus. However, historically that usually means more focus on foreign adventures.
Of course, to your point, you never know what Trump will do, but most people here have had enough. Again, I hate to make anecdotal arguments, but I know quite a few Trump supporters that have lost their support for the first time— which is something I didn’t see happening anytime soon.
The 2026 midterms will be a sobering referendum, mark my words (hopefully this comment ages well).
That’s wild to me. Trump killed the EV tax credits which have decimated Tesla and given China the edge in the future energy race. One would think he would no longer support the administration but hey it’s 2026, nothing matters anymore apparently lol
Musks companies had many investigations and lawsuits where making those go away are more important than losing the EV tax. Supporting trump= lose EV tax but gain DOGE where he got to gut any service or department he chooses.
Hate to be the bearer of bad news but, Trump supporters are kind of known for moving the goal post, rather than confront realization they are wrong. I have been waiting for the bridge too far with Trump supporters for a while. Looking at the other bridges we have already gleefully crossed, I'm pretty damned sure this one won't be the wake up call either.
I guess the sort positive from my perspective is that EU leadership is finally starting to understand that the US has left chat and is off losing its damned mind for the foreseeable future.
So if you guys could go ahead and fully commit to helping out Ukraine instead of watching the Trump admin try and fuck them over that would be great.
Signed by: Just a guy who appreciated his allies, but as an adult can admit that we are not the answer right now. Thanks.
Denmarkbwas invaded and occupied by Germany in 1940. They enacted a standing order for all forces in 1952 that says fight off invaders, do not wait for orders.
Technically yes, it is legal for soldiers to refuse unlawful orders. Although we all know that the U.S. government will twist the meaning of “lawful” to punish whoever they want
I believe Denmark should ask for help and every single NATO European country should send their troops to Greenland. Not many, just few from each country. USA should know that Europeans are supporting each other.
A lot of Americans vote for whoever the Republican candidate is without thinking about it. A lot vote for Trump personally because they thought he would make life better for them economically or return jobs to their communities etc (Noble and right things to want from a leader). Some vote for him because they think he'll uncover conspiracies and child exploitation rings and other craziness. Some vote for Trump because they think "woke" in the democratic party or in the country has gone too far
Enough swing voters in 2024 thought Trump would be better for their pocket books than Harris would be essentially, so he won.
Don't forget decades of the Southern strategy / culture war to get people to blame some minority for their troubles and take eyes off the huge wealth gap Reagan started.
As long as Trump legitimizes their hate and fear, he's golden no matter how much he punishes them.
I’ve said it before and I’ll gladly say it again, Europe actually learned from WWII and isn’t going to pussy-foot around wannabe-fascists like American leaders have done back home.
If any American forces attack Greenland, you are on your own. You will forever be International War Criminals and hunted to the ends of the Earth just like the nazis were.
I’ve said it before and I’ll gladly say it again, Europe actually learned from WWII and isn’t going to pussy-foot around wannabe-fascists like American leaders have done back home.
I have some people ive known a long time that actually, seriously, want us to take canada mexico and greenland.
To literally make north America just America basically.
They were always a little... Aggressive id say, but its been more than just them being comfortable saying it, theyre actually changing over the last few years, and its for sure a concerning trend because i know if its happening to them, it must be happening to many more out there
Domestic Terror is part of their playbook. Create a domestic enemy and then implement a security force to control and eliminate them. Once you have that, the definition of terrorist becomes very flexible such that it encompasses all your legitimate political opponents.
It would be nice to explain this as Russian bots, but I'm afraid that's not all there is to it.
United States has a traitor problem. Since the January 6th insurrection, MAGA has fought against the United States, subverting democracy and distorting American values. They are the American Nazis, the traitors in the midst of society.
MAGA are traitors to USA, and traitors to the entire democratic world. If a European nation was conspiring to commit violence against US citizens and to annex US land, they would rightly be seen as traitors. MAGA is no different. They take and take and take, pretend they don't understand what they are doing, hide behind their memes and mockery, and grow ever more violent day by day.
First it was violence against immigrants that was normalized, yesterday against any Americans who get in their way, and tomorrow perhaps against Europe. I'm afraid MAGA will not yield, except finally at gunpoint. If it comes to that, both American patriots and their allies across the democratic world must be ready to fight the MAGA treason, and stamp it down so hard it will never rise again.
Denmark is doing the right thing by saying they will defend their territory and people, and they are bloody brave to boot!
Fck Trump, fck his administration, and f*ck his Putin-aligned, warmongering demeanour.
To those of you in the USA who don't support his actions, I just want to say I am so sorry for what you are going through. I have American friends and family and would never wish this on anyone.
Thinking of anyone negatively impacted by any of this administration's actions. I hope things get better!
Every single enlisted soldier and officer in the US military will be prosecuted and go to prison if they obey orders and attack Greenland, even according to US laws. These members of the military will also not be able to set foot on any other NATO or EU country ever again. Danish, Swedish, Norwegian tourists are all over the world. One day you will get your faces punched in too!
Ew this is gross. An attack on Greenland would be completely illegal. The orders are illegal, the action is illegal. American troops shall not follow illegal orders, BUT shit like this is seen as a challenge to some, and they're all to eager to take up that challenge. It wouldn't end well for Denmark, that's just a fact.
It would dissolve NATO and only strengthen russia and china.
The US would be sanctioned hard and lose its biggest trade-partner. If germany, france and luxembourg decide to sell their treasurie-bonds, everyday americans would 100% feel the impact.
NATO states could lean towards China since the US is even less trustworthy under Trump.
It would only benefit the enemies of the USA, but Trump is aware of that. Putin simply promised him to not release videos of him fucking underage girls/ blowing bubba, if Trump reaches his goal and ends NATO.
I’d imagine that would be the route,. South Korea, Japan, Australia and any of the other capable pacific allies would take, because fundamentally the USA would no longer be trusted by any of their former allies.
Nuclear Non Proliferation is on its deathbed as it stands.
Recent history has yielded the rather ugly lesson that there is no guarantee of safety nearly as reliable as having the ability to destroy anybody else's cities on short notice.
But of course the US actually invading an ally would make that foreseeable trend a lot worse.
I believe Trump is doing this at putins' request. By stating the US might attack Greenland, he's forcing European military assets to be reallocated from Ukraine to Greenland. Any US soldiers attacking Greenland are willing soviet assets.
Why the fuck is r/military openly in support of doing this. Have yall forgotten your purpose or not learned from the past? I’m just some random college student in Miami, but watching this character from active duty and veterans alike in this sub is concerning as an American.
Yall are supposed to defend us, not encroach into other countries boundaries because some pissed off old business man who grifted his way into the presidency said so.
I don’t care if he took maduro, shit I wouldn’t even care to redeem his bullshit for a new leaf if he fucking killed Putin. Chances are he’s just gonna find ways to oppress and profit from the public.
To think I wanted to be a marine one day.
Then i saw the direction this shit was going in and said FUCK THAT.
I knew they’d make a perversion out of our military. Once graceful and steadfast, now complicit with their heads low.
From privates to NCO’s…from NCO’s to CO’s..
As a random American citizen who is concerned.
What the FUCK is going on ?
Edit: to be clear. I bear no disrespect towards the military. What I DO bear however is disappointment. This isn’t a judgement, this is a tear shed to what we once sought as a country historically to get away from.
We flipped our shit over taxes on tea, but say fuck it we ball to invading passive countries who didn’t even have beef with us?
Downvote me to hell, judge me if you will.
I’m open to all views, this is my 2 cents…if inflation even gives that a real value anymore..(yes. Pun intended.)
This is a phenomena I see a lot in online comments sections. Subject is ax. Just about every guy who comment I See Is either heavily opposed to X, or asking why the comments section is so overwhelmingly supportive of X despite the comments showing otherwise. Am I just arriving late to a comments section? I guess in this case many of us who think Miller and Trump are halfway full of shit and TACO or going to be reckless and unsuccessful in initiating an actual attack on Greenland could be considered in favor of X.
Yes, I commented eastern standard time, 2 AM so, I suppose you are slightly late to the section and all those in support of this have either been downvoted, deleted, or dropped to the bottom of the post. I can’t imagine why anyone wants beef with fucking Greenland out of all countries.
well, the same that happened in russia. If you opress the opposition hard enough and go after active service members that speak out, you will have this outcome in no time.
Mark Kelly was no coincidence, it was a power move to show the military that they will cut you off, once you speak out, no matter if it is legal or not. Now we are at the point where most people won't do shit because they have family and are risking to lose their income and worse.
People who are willing to invade other countries in 21st century just because someone told them, especially if they are their allies, should be more than disrespected. If you are willing to go with fascism, well, there should be no "I was just following orders" defense.
That said, I havent seen support for it here so far, maybe there is some. But what frightens me is they would just follow orders. Meaning they would do anything basically. Military is important, and it is important to follow orders. But we are also in 21st century and they have access to information like no soldiers before. They should know aggressive wars are bad. And history shows soldiers can choose to say no. Sadly most dont bother.
Why I think they are not blameless? It would be like only blaming the mafia boss for actions of mafia. No, you blame other members of mafia who do evil things as well. They are also only following orders. And if you attack another country unprovoked at this century, you clearly are a mafia like entity. They kidnapped a guy and want to run his business now. What else can we call it.
I'm absolutely disgusted with our military members and our fellow countrymen and women siding with trump and his administration on this. The Danes and people of Greenland our allies and friends. They fought with us during the GWOT even though they didn't have to and provide us with bases we need to protect our country. They are some of the most honest and nicest people I have met and to turn around and do this to them is just utterly disrespectful and tone deaf asf. We don't need Greenland, this is some manifest destiny dictator bs not proper US negotiations. You don't threaten your friends and neighbors especially ones that have always been there for you.
It's not picking a fucking side. The military is not political, the Dems and Repubs decided to make us political.
Congress legislated a lot of leeway to the president. This gives the president the authority. The military is not there to argue what they should or shouldn't do. They are here to provide options for when diplomacy breaks down. Not pass judgement on the use of an option.
It has always been this way, it is how the institution is designed. The military is designed so it cannot do a coup that some seem to be rooting for.
Who does Trump think he actually is? He’s just some random real estate guy (not even a good one) that hung out with sex offenders in his free time and now he wants to really fuck over the world completely. For what? He’s over 80 years old and probably won’t make it much longer, but wants to go down in history so fucking bad that he fucks up everything we build the last 80 years
An attack on Greenland would have so many economic repercussions for the United States. Every country in Nato would immediately throw sanctions on the US. Does the US have the firepower? Absolutely, but it would be a very stupid decision imo.
As a European I respect and admire USA for being the world leader on almost everything, science, technology, military. I feel that we have way more in common than Russia and China and I'm really happy being close to them.
Please though, stop being disrespectful of European military capabilities and willingness to fight, we just prefer to focus on green energy rather on panzers nowadays. Europeans fought for thousands of years (last time was on US wars), stop presenting them as people who shake from fear when they hear about war.
EU possess thousands of EU made fighter jets, war ships and military systems as well as nuclear weapons from France and Britain. Not even close on USA level but that's why we are allies, to offer what we have without many questions, when the reason is right (war on terrorism).
Those of us here that have served or are currently serving (not me), or that are somewhat informed on world military capabilities/ topics (me) have much respect for our European allies and their militaries. In fact, polls show that the vast majority of us support our European allies. The only ones that don’t are the Donny fanatics, and they don’t even know why they don’t like Europe.
For God’s sake, thousands of you died for our flag in Afghanistan. It’s also been ingrained in us from an early age that our grandfathers fought and died together on the beaches, fields, forests, and mountains of Europe in WWII. A giant orange child cannot convince us otherwise. As I mentioned in a previous comment, I have yet to meet a single Trump supporter who supports this Greenland rhetoric.
EDIT: to add some specific data to this, recently the Reagan Institute found that 2/3 of Americans have a favorable view of NATO.
Setting aside morality or legality for a moment, & just focusing on the RealPolitik for a moment.
What does the US want or need relating to Greenland that Denmark is currently preventing us from achieving?
I can see that there are legitimate security interests that the US has in Greenland & if it was controlled by a hostile power, then maybe it would make sense but Denmark is a NATO ally so it just seems weird that we wouldn’t find a way to work with Denmark instead of taking over Greenland?
Militarily, of course Denmark wouldn’t have much fight to put up with, but that isn’t the point here, is it? What happens when Denmark is steamrolled?
Americans need to wake the fuck up on what’s happening right now. EU and allies responses to Trump is only as critical as it as they can be without further triggering Trump - it’s just the short term management of a very dangerous person. It’s the least bad approach our politicians learned to handle him. But we are all fuming on the inside.
The long term consequences for U.S. relations is a fast moving train to make previous friends your enemies. Here in Europe, middle class non-political people is starting to hate the U.S. because of how it’s treating longtime allies and friends.
I’ve spent a lot of time in the U.S. and love much of it, but fuck me I wouldn’t go back to visit as things are now. Numbers in tourism is showing that.
Wouldn't go well for anyone. There'd be unnecessary conflict and then the US will forever be seen as the same aggressive expansionist assholes that they decried throughout the last hundred years.
It would fuck the US up absolutely. They would have breached Article 5, Denmark may not have a huge Army but NATO combined would be compelled to take action. Militarily it would be closer than you think.
That's on top of the absolutely catastrophic effect it would have on the US on the World stage, their economy, etc etc.
And with a population of 50k theres no way there would be any sort of large viable insurgency. They'd have to worry about staying warm and remaining undetected, as well as getting access to food. Like theres a reason Greenland is sparkly populated, its hard to live there lol
Why do Americans think any modern army would even try fighting toe to toe with them if forced?
You think the Danes are going to entrench and put up neon signs saying ‘drop long range ordinance here’?
I can imagine small groups of independent European special forces blending effortlessly in American society, I can’t image the same with Americans anywhere in Europe.
The small number of Danish military in Greenland will present a Viking competence in battle that will be on a totally different scale from that recently exhibited by various not-motivated/brave patriots/who-knows Venezuelan soldiers.
Actually the mining companies in Greenland welcome more US investment. They would also like a larger presence of the US military in Greenland and in Iceland . The CEO of Amaroq Minerals the largest mining company in Greenland was on Bloomberg TV last night saying exactly that. The only "fight" coming out of all this will be between Greenlanders who want the US to come in with money and capital investment and the dipshits who oppose it
I doubt it will come to this as threatening Denmark is likely more a bargaining strategy than anything else but I've been looking into this and there are some interesting points being missed by most coverage. In no particular order
The president can only declare war for 40 days before needing the senate to approve it. They would vote against war with Europe so Denmark only need to hold out 40 days if a war broke out and they know this
It's not theirs to sell. Denmark doesn't really "own" Greenland, it's more of a satellite state with it's own parliament and it's own budget (more on that later). It's technically an "Autonomous territory of Denmark". So it's like me selling my local park to someone else, the Idea of buying Greenland is flawed. 91% of Greenlanders do not want to be American so any sale will likely result in Greenland declaring independence. Denmark could arguably sell what it does have which is no real say in what minerals are extracted and they they actually subsidise the Greenland budget by 20%. I would probably say
"Yes Mr trump buy Greenland off me for 100 billion and then you can pay for Greenlands subsidies and when you stop they'll declare independence. The minerals are under 3km of ice anyway" 🤣
Arctic warfare is not the same as regular warfare. American doctrine of combined arms, mobile warfare supply logistics will fall flat on its face. The US military has only two icebreakers, they will not be able to supply troops in Greenland, their tanks will not work, their IFV will freeze solid and not start if you turn them off. There's no linking roads in Greenland so most operations will be a amphibious landing operation with minimal armour. This could be like operation barbarossa on steroids if done wrong. But the US does have the Alaska regiment of about 25,000 so these people are Americans best bet but the point is American military is not set up to fight in the Arctic
Greenland has about 22 guns per hundred people who are highly trained in arctic hunting => 10,000 guns
Greenlanders do not want to be American but also 65% don't want to be Danish either. It's highly likely they'll get their independence anyway. Should they wish to stage an armed revolt or insurgency they can
The mineral extraction will mostly not be profitable
Is air supremacy likely? The topography makes hiding air defence systems really easy

Just gonna leave this here.
It's too late. The USA lost every trust within NATO already. The damage is done.
Its not about getting forgiveness, its about holding them accountable.
Republicans surely have. It’s possible Dems could gain some temporary credit back.
It was Putin’s objective to destroy NATO from the inside out by manipulating its largest member. Mission accomplished. Points, Putin.
Most successful KGB mission ever.
I live in Europe and and I agree with you
Even if Trump were to be removed from office, the US has already lost a great deal of trust among its allies. It will take decades to repair that damage. But the road to hell is paved and the US is rolling downhill.
That is okay if we at least pull back from the brink! Americans DO NOT want war with Denmark or EU.
It is not too late to stop and turn on Trumps DUMB ASS ORDERS.
SAS, if you're listening.....
You think Afghanistan had nothing to do with Europe.
I dearly hope your brother is right as well.
He’s right. Any service member in the U.S. knows that you don’t attack your allies. Annexing Greenland? He’s literally becoming Putin but in a much shorter time.
Here's hoping nobody ever has to fight in the snowbanks again.
Miller is convinced NATO won’t fight over Greenland.
So he is very likely to convince Trump to drop a brigade task force into Greenland to seize it.
If the 600 Danish troops defend Greenland we will have NATO troops killing each other.
Neither Miller nor Trump care about causalities. Only that they get to announce the US now owns Greenland.
This is after Denmark answered the call after 9/11 and fought alongside us for twenty years.
There would be no way to salvage the NATO alliance after that.
And the US would be a pariah state for the rest of many of our lives.
I suspect the whole point of this Greenland saber rattling is to fracture and end NATO. Long been a goal of Trump.
Goal of Putin
Are you suggesting there is a difference?
Couldn’t expect less from President Krasnov
FTFY.
It’s not either/or, it’s yes and…
Yes and ROI for his techbros and vulture capitalist donors. Trump appointed Paypal cofounder Ken Howery ambassador to Denmark to advance the mission.
https://gizmodo.com/peter-thiel-backed-startup-that-wanted-to-buy-greenland-is-thrilled-that-trump-wants-to-buy-greenland-2000548415
He was promptly met with ridicule.
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/greenland-trump-tech-moguls-donations-b2734045.html Tech moguls who invested in Greenland mining also gave Trump campaign $243m: The tech industry desperately needs the rare earth minerals on the island, while Trump repeatedly threatens to take over the territory.
NATO has never been stronger but there are nations, like Canada, that are getting uneasy with this ongoing issue.
Ding!
Is a good point.
“Give us Greenland or we pull out of NATO.” There, no war needed.
People in Greenland said NO already, remember this thing called democracy ?
That was just my suggestion to the person I replied to. Tensions are high but not everything said on Reddit is serious nor requires an /s. My suggestion was to avoid the whole saber rattling bullshit and just leave nato if it’s so fucking important to do so. Greenland would never agree to such a thing so that would be trumps out. Follow me?
Well sometimes you don't know so .. my bad i guess :p
Only thing being is the vast majority of nato countries would say go on the don't let the door hit you in the arse on the way out, and when America gets hit by second 911 type attack America is on its own, plus America will loose all its bases in Europe
Such a disgusting traitor.
Dutch troops? Didn't know the Netherlands got another colony. Jokes aside, Danish is Denmark, Dutch is the Netherlands
Sorry. I keep messing that up.
If they started referring to the people as Dennish and Hollandaise like I’ve been suggesting, you wouldn’t have this issue
Of course it was (also known as, ample hx) Holland. I find the comment about New York ≠ USA most apt. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holland
my mom (dutch) once got stopped at customs before entering the US because when the customs agent asked her where she's from she said holland and the agent couldnt believe a dutch person would say that instead of the netherlands, he flipped out at her with "HOLLAND DOESNT EXIST ITS THE NETHERLANDS AND YOU'RE DEFINITELY NOT FROM THERE"
In many languages equivalent of both Netherlands and Holland exist. It's not accurate but it's used quite often abroad. In French for example we have Pays-Bas and Hollande. People living there are néerlandais or hollandais
If we're using Hollandaise, we must use Danish. I'm hungry.
Need to go get some butter and egg yolks.
I thought I’d had a stroke of brilliance too, calling them that, only to find out the French actually do call them Hollandaise
Probably a good thing you are retired then. You probably would confuse allies with enemies. (No wonder there's always lots of "friendly fire" when US forces are involved.)
Both the Netherlands and Denmark are allies.
Or they could’ve just been Denmarker and Netherlander
If Trump gets a bunch of US and Danish troops killed in a firefight I think congress would actually impeach him.
I think so too.
If they don’t I think the American people will take to the streets and stay there until they do.
I know I will.
With all due respect and from the perspective of a Dane, you should’ve taken to the streets already. Trump is starting unjust wars, the US is threatening its NATO allies, and ICE is killing your fellow citizens. Why wait?
I have been on the streets.
Shit! You guys are fucked! If your judiciary and the media and the government are a serving one goal, you have ceased to be a free country
Theyre cowards, and would never impeach him
There is already some whispers to send a JEF task force for drills in Greenland.
Many here have long viewed the US critically. You guys always waged too much war.
Well, it looks increasingly likely we are facing at least one more. Against ourselves.
Trump is literally the enemy of the people - domestic enemy
it seem very old school colonial act . the people of greenland seem happy with the status quo or at least its better to usa rule and are being totally ignored.
They're happy on their current path to independence, I wouldn't say they're happy being ruled by Denmark either.
But they absolutely will not accept trading one ruling nation for another, especially if the new incumbent ceases their path to independence, which the US would most certainly do.
What are the american peoples redlines at this point?
America already has 150 military service persons on Greenland.
Under the 1951 agreement with Denmark, America can add as many military bases as it wishes on Greenland.
If Trump wants to place 200,000 American soldiers on Greenland, the treaty says all he has to do is inform Denmark, and it's done.
Those who want to see the FACTS can read it here:
https://avalon.law.yale.edu/20th_century/den001.asp
https://fortune.com/2026/01/08/trump-military-presence-1951-agreement-greenland-denmark/
We also had nuclear weapons galore on the island.
https://www.arcticfocus.org/stories/the-us-army-tried-portable-nuclear-power-at-remote-bases-60-years-ago-it-didnt-go-well/
As they should.
I fail to see how Maga didnt vote for this, but then again if the farmer situation is anything to go by they clearly dont look before they leap
Because they have no clue what they voted for, and they don’t care, they just love their orange calf.
Musk has said he’s going to go all in for monetary support for trump for midterms. We all know that means he’ll help rig the elections once again.
I hope that the musk election rigging was all conspiracy and we see a blow out during midterms but I’m not hopeful.
That’s wild to me. Trump killed the EV tax credits which have decimated Tesla and given China the edge in the future energy race. One would think he would no longer support the administration but hey it’s 2026, nothing matters anymore apparently lol
Musk is more invested in his other ventures and wants to be a major military contractor like Thiel. He couldn't care less about Tesla.
Thanks.
If they don’t cheat their way to victory.
I hope so too, but Trump is too unpredictable for hope sometimes.
An empire toppled by its enemies can rise again, but one which crumbles from within, is dead forever,
Playing straight into Russian and Chinese hands.
Headline is stupid.
Denmarkbwas invaded and occupied by Germany in 1940. They enacted a standing order for all forces in 1952 that says fight off invaders, do not wait for orders.
The Ministry of defense has confirmed wednesday that the order stands.
It’s the Telegraph… reading it even once lowers your IQ by ten points.
It's a gullible word full of people who react soley on emotions.
The bigger issue is the U.S. has Airmen and Guardians stationed at the Ptuffik radar station up there. What happens to them if this takes place?
frozen dog food?
It is possible US troops could just say “no I will not be a part of this, I will not fight our allies over this” right?
Yes, but Trump wanted to hang Mark Kelly for pointing that out.
Perhaps soon you will have to decide whether you declare for Kelly or for Trump.
Technically yes, it is legal for soldiers to refuse unlawful orders. Although we all know that the U.S. government will twist the meaning of “lawful” to punish whoever they want
Justice seems to be more of an illusion every passing day in our nation.
I believe Denmark should ask for help and every single NATO European country should send their troops to Greenland. Not many, just few from each country. USA should know that Europeans are supporting each other.
I don’t understand the support for Trump.
He 100% fixed the election. She won. These plans were in place and he was determined to follow through with them by any means possible.
As if! Look at their non-response to Putin
Ukraine isn’t in the EU or NATO.
That’s likely the main reason for it.
And Germany stepped up recently to support Ukraine.
If it comes to it all I have to say is- good hunting Denmark.
Holy fuck. The comments. Are these propaganda bots or are there really that many proud US imperialists?
I have some people ive known a long time that actually, seriously, want us to take canada mexico and greenland.
To literally make north America just America basically.
They were always a little... Aggressive id say, but its been more than just them being comfortable saying it, theyre actually changing over the last few years, and its for sure a concerning trend because i know if its happening to them, it must be happening to many more out there
They must really want to see domestic terror attacks across their new North American empire.
Domestic Terror is part of their playbook. Create a domestic enemy and then implement a security force to control and eliminate them. Once you have that, the definition of terrorist becomes very flexible such that it encompasses all your legitimate political opponents.
What I’m learning these days is a lot of people really love raw displays of power.
To watch raw displays of power, participating in such demonstration on the other hand..
This is what happens when you purposely keep people uneducated
Those Danish cats were fucking great in Afghanistan, my favorite of our coalition allies I served with. We need to leave our fucking friends alone.
Good luck!
Remember folks, the Nordic Council has officially stated they are backing Denmark/Greenland on this.
That would mean fighting VIKINGS... including Finland... in the Arctic.
Ew this is gross. An attack on Greenland would be completely illegal. The orders are illegal, the action is illegal. American troops shall not follow illegal orders, BUT shit like this is seen as a challenge to some, and they're all to eager to take up that challenge. It wouldn't end well for Denmark, that's just a fact.
it wouldnt end well for america either.
It would also affect Nuclear Non Proliferation. If countries can no longer rely on America's nuclear shield, they are likely to build their own.
I wonder what would have happened if Ukraine had nukes?
We just pulled out of 66 global organizations today. Many of them having the purposes of writing and enforcing international laws.
Denmark is your ally.
I don’t see a single post supporting this.
Ok, so I'm not the only one confused.
Maybe he’s referring to other military subreddits? 🤷🏾♂️
Nah, when it was freshly posted you coulda sworn it was Gestapo talkin. Perhaps they got downvoted to hell rather than me
This is a phenomena I see a lot in online comments sections.
Look up Patton's famous quote about being a Soldier.
We are not political. Congress delegated a lot of power to the president. The military will not save the US from itself, it is not set up to do so.
I’m trying to find the supporting answers and I find none. Can you point me to some?
America is a memory.
Who does Trump think he actually is? He’s just some random real estate guy (not even a good one) that hung out with sex offenders in his free time and now he wants to really fuck over the world completely. For what? He’s over 80 years old and probably won’t make it much longer, but wants to go down in history so fucking bad that he fucks up everything we build the last 80 years
We have fully become the bad guys
An attack on Greenland would have so many economic repercussions for the United States. Every country in Nato would immediately throw sanctions on the US. Does the US have the firepower? Absolutely, but it would be a very stupid decision imo.
Lol everything is so fucked.
Ww2 isnt even 100 years ago and yet some countries are running into creating another one.
Yeah makes fun being 26 in this economy and timeline.
Pax Armata here we come
As an American, and a veteran, I will go and fight for Greenland, fuck thus imperialist bullshit.
If Trump does this the champagne bottles will pop in the Kremlin.
In earlier generations, the Danes would have looked like this before you die:
Except for automatic rifles and MultiCam uniforms, our soldiers look more or less the same now.
Is whole thing is just a recipe for disaster like we seriously don’t need more chaos
Why do the juice boxes want Greenland?
I really wish he didn’t miss that day
Are you not allowed to say "fuck?"
So the question I have is this:
Setting aside morality or legality for a moment, & just focusing on the RealPolitik for a moment.
What does the US want or need relating to Greenland that Denmark is currently preventing us from achieving?
I can see that there are legitimate security interests that the US has in Greenland & if it was controlled by a hostile power, then maybe it would make sense but Denmark is a NATO ally so it just seems weird that we wouldn’t find a way to work with Denmark instead of taking over Greenland?
That this is even a discussion is just sad. How the hell do we come back from this insanity?
Every death that follows is ENTIRELY on our (America’s) hands.
Yeah that wouldn’t go well
Militarily, of course Denmark wouldn’t have much fight to put up with, but that isn’t the point here, is it?
Was so happy when I saw that most of my country's world cup matches will be outside the US.
Wouldn't go well for anyone. There'd be unnecessary conflict and then the US will forever be seen as the same aggressive expansionist assholes that they decried throughout the last hundred years.
And if the Americans can have an empire, guess who else will want one? Russia and China, that's who. And now they've got grounds to do it.
Beats rolling over to fascists.
Ironically, that’s basically what happened in WWII to Denmark
Well that seems to have learned something about fascism from WWII unlike half of the USA at this point.
Probably but at least they can take out some invaders before dying for their land.
The US has brawn but no brains in warfare. They've lost regularly in war games to the British and European nations
You think fighting an insurgency was tough in the jungle or the desert? Try the snow.
That's like, 10x easier than fighting in the jungle tbf
What a stupid statement
Right!!! this isn't WW2 literally the whole military uses thermals
And with a population of 50k theres no way there would be any sort of large viable insurgency. They'd have to worry about staying warm and remaining undetected, as well as getting access to food. Like theres a reason Greenland is sparkly populated, its hard to live there lol
Yea fuck that
Better than you think.
If anyone attacks Greenland, they will get hit by an asteroid.
Time to jump start their own nuclear program.
Skyrim belongs to Mudcrabs
Why do Americans think any modern army would even try fighting toe to toe with them if forced?
You think the Danes are going to entrench and put up neon signs saying ‘drop long range ordinance here’?
I can imagine small groups of independent European special forces blending effortlessly in American society, I can’t image the same with Americans anywhere in Europe.
Denmark draws a lot of water in Greenland, you don’t draw shit, Donny
The small number of Danish military in Greenland will present a Viking competence in battle that will be on a totally different scale from that recently exhibited by various not-motivated/brave patriots/who-knows Venezuelan soldiers.
Molon labe
I would probably say "Yes Mr trump buy Greenland off me for 100 billion and then you can pay for Greenlands subsidies and when you stop they'll declare independence.
