  • While the automation process should have greatly improved the accuracy of the results, please keep in mind errors probably slipped through. We are not paid as mods and did not check every single submission and rely on user reports to check them.

  • Fata Morgana is like the greatest opening track ever. Seeing them open with that live too is so badass.

Really happy it got its flowers

100% agree. It’s such a great opener and sets the tone for the album.

    Nothing beats Nihilist..

Easily. Opening live with that and Black Rainbow almost made my head fall off.

  • Bloom robbed so hard

Bloom - The Light We Chase is my album of the year. Absolutely incredible album!

Amen. Their work is INCREDIBLE and they put on such a great live show. Jono leaves everything on that stage

I haven't even heard of the other Aussie one, never seen anyone talk it up and Bloom are brilliant. Might have to go check it out if their album is better than Blooms.

  • Damn, surprised to not see more of Adept. They had AOTY for me.

Comeback of the year behind Nik…. lol what

Yeah. Robert is 42 and still pumping out insane vocals. Read here that their live shows are trash. Went to see them last sunday but they were great. Like what.

So we were at the same show and it was EPIC like what are people saying

I saw them in Stockholm at Broken summer this year and they're were trash. Robert couldn't scream or sing for long periods of time. He switched from singing to screaming in a way that you could tell was because his voice was cracking. I also saw them in their "prime" in Stockholm and they were trash then as well.

    Edit: spelling.

Interesting that he did so much better now.

Hopefully he practiced since then. They did say that it was their first performance in 10 years at Broken summer. There were also other bands playing that day so my experience could have been enhanced by the fact that there was such a big difference in performance and skills compared to the other bands playing that day. But IMO Robert has never been a strong live performer compared to the studio version.

  • Stick to Your Guns had one of the most underrated metalcore albums of the year. No mention at all lol.

Yeah I listened to that one a lot, it really didn't get the attention it deserved

Agreed! Especially after Spectre which I found pretty mid, I had no expectations, but it really felt like a return to form by them.

I love that album. So glad I got to see them live with Boundaries

Fuck yeah, they’re both amazing live!

    Talk your shit

one of the few big bands that actually practices what they preach

Yeah they were my #2 overall listened to on Spotify this year 🥲

  • No way y'all shat on the Nokturnal Awards with such vigorous contempt but then these are y'all's picks. Greyhaven, Spiritbox, Currents and Callous Daoboys dominating 75% of the categories, what was that about Nik's community only listening to 3 bands?

Let's be real, the only thing most people were upset at his awards for was that it wasn't their favourite 3 bands, not the narrowness of taste on display.

    You’ve nailed it

/r/metalcore users and Nik Nocturnal's audience have significant overlap, and y'all have abysmal taste

Agree for the most part but I'm talking about those who took it upon to blame Nik personally for his awards (which technically aren't even his, he just hosts and produces, the actual awards are community voted like here) and then congratulate themselves for this list. I swear I've seen some of the same usernames

Currents belongs in all of those

Ngl Tsunami Sea was a pretty overrated album and the production on it was quite mediocre for modern standards, espescially compared to DB's previous work, which is usually quite solid. I'm surprised to see it nominated so much here.

Exactly what I thought. These are the same bland-ass results.

Hilarious results tbh. Been listening on and off for decades at this point and I find most of this list mediocre, cookie cutter, slop.

You know, that could be because, while some of the other bands may be good, they're also derivative and aren't doing anything that hasn't been done a million times by now.

  • Echo Sonata by ERRA not being in best guitar performance is just criminal

I personally thought it was the better of the two singles.

Same. Gore of Being is a decent metalcore song but Echo Sonata is just an amazing Erra song I love it

The instrument categories are always full of oddities. Very few people ever actually bother to put forward a nomination, so a lot of them make it to voting and even the award more or less by default.

Most of my nominations across bigger categories got absolutey nowhere, but both my nominations for bass performance made it through.

  • Wow Dan Braunstein and Will Putney were busy

  • Ah it's just the nocturnal awards again

  • Nik Nocturnal being on the comeback of the year podium instead of Deadguy says it all really. A microcosm of the state of the sub.

Most anticipated, given that Converge are putting an album out in February, is also quite funny.

The sub fiends for their bi-yearly Erra and Invent Animate release

Think my brain protected me from looking at that one first time around...

Straight up insanity a YouTuber who took a couple months off placed higher than bands that had been inactive for years (or decades) that came back with quality new music.

If anything should have just been an honorable mention… I mean if you leave and come back in the same year is it really a comeback?

Can we just repost these results onto r/corejerk already?

When do we start and begin to use a "true Metalcore" sub?

I don’t think even an inch should be ceded to people that think metalcore is when you have breakdowns.

I don't know if it's one-time thing, but posts in it require moderator approval, which is inconvenient

It certainly never used to require that.

Is it because i have recently created/low karma account then?

Tried to post in r/metalcore got "low sub karma", tried to post in r/revivalcore got moderation T_T

Looking through the posts there, it's not clear that I have the same idea as to what "revival core" is reviving as the posts on that sub. Good idea, but don't think this is quite it for what I'm hoping for.

Yeah and He didn’t even take a break from music, so it’s not a comeback. This is a music sub not r/youtube

  • This subreddit sucks lol

  • I’m not remotely surprised but I’m still disappointed

  • Pretty clear that the lurkers pulled through on this one. Dan Braunstein, whose mixes sound the same and has only put out a couple of semi-metalcore releases this year, won over powerhouses like Will and Randy, probably just because Spiritbox and Dayseeker were listed. Not a single smaller label like DAZE or TCS, who have been doing great things, got in the top 3, and instead, big labels won. Spiritbox won even though I feel like I haven't seen much actual discussion around that album here.

I’ve brought it up several times but it’s an extremely loud minority of people on this sub who dominate the conversations and posting

Yeah and that minority is whining all over this thread that people had different taste than them now lmao.

Yeah it was all quite predictable, but those stood out to me. I've never even heard of Dan Braunstein, and most that voted for him probably haven't either, just voted for him because they saw a band they like. Will or Randy definitely deserved the award. Daze and Coming Strife are carrying metalcore rn, so them getting nothing behind the big corporate labels is painful.

Most lurkers are lurkers because TradCore hipsters took over.

We used to talk about bands like A Day To Remember/Bring me the Horizon so much, they had to essentially retire them due to bits.

I really do miss those days. When /r/Metalcore was turning into a umbrella term.

Can't wait for this to get downvoted because lurkers don't use this sub to talk. They use it to find new music, and now that less music is coming in....

  • Disappointed but not surprised. The majority of this sub has the most boring taste in heavy music imaginable

  • Tsunami Sea was a slow burner for me; wasn't blown away on first listen, but the more I heard it the more I liked it. Still would have preferred The Callous Daoboys, but not a bad winner.

It ended up being my most listened to album of 2025. So many solid tracks that burrowed into my brain and made me return again and again. Great album. Courtney is at the top of her game right now.

I think there’s like 3 of the best songs they’ve ever done on it and the rest aren’t bad not great either

Very much on the same page with Tsunami Sea being a slow burner. The Fear of Fear (although a much shorter EP) was one of my favorite drops of all time, so I wasn’t super eager for a new SB album just yet.

Yeah I gave it a 2.5/5 on musicboard first listen, but the songs really clicked after hearing them live and now I love it (up to 4.5/5.) I don't mind it winning here though I'm surprised considering how much action the Daoboys got on this sub.

  • I liked Tsunami Sea fine… but I’m still shocked to see it in the #1 slot over the other contenders, esp Greyhaven.

    [deleted]

I don't think it necessarily needs to push boundaries, but it should probably be metalcore...

  • I don’t want to harp on it too much, but those are some pretty bleak winners. r/metalcore not beating the “Doesn’t actually like metalcore” accusations lol

On a positive note, funny that Volatile Ways ended up winning best Australian album and the underground bands were a bright spot.

This sub is literally just a modern metal sub now. Anything with actual hardcore roots gets no attention here.

  • Im so fuckin glad greyhaven made it

  • Wow, what a joke.

  • Currents....fuck yea

I am happy to see them sweep because I'm an enormous Chris Wiseman fan boy. This plus Imperium Delirium by Shadow of Intent getting second place in the r/deathcore AOTY, big day for me.

  • And it’s terrible. Like you all really only listen to these same fucking bands?

  • None of the albums on the metalcore list went on repeat for me, they were just decent to me.

The non-metalcore albums mentioned were all albums that I heard a lot though, especially Whitechapel.

  • Over the moon for Greyhaven.

  • damn this shit sucks

at least Volatile Ways and Johnny Booth won lol

  • I’ve officially outgrown this sub.

  • Surprised that Daoboys didnt roll through this. Had no idea Currents was so much bigger around here considering how (if i remember correctly) they got rolled by Invent Animate a few years ago.

Currents is just a very popular band by metalcore standards. 1 mil listeners on Spotify, and they’ve been around for a while. There’s also likely a lot of recency bias which IMO is probably a big part of it.

Currents is easily one of the most jerked bands here, and Chris Wiseman also doing Shadow of Intent only adds to it

I went to a Daoboys show this week, and there was a total of 75 people there. This sub yearns for them, but actual turn out was wack as fuck. The rest of the show was sick, I left before Daoboys played cause they sucked the last time I saw them.

Why did you go to the show then?

Rev3rent and Psycho-frame were opening. I’d seen psycho-frame before and wanted to see Rev3rent for the first time.

I saw this exact line-up with fromjoy. Wasn't much of a fan of Psycho-Frame going in, but they KILLED it! Will be looking for more opportunities to see them live.

I saw the Callous Daoboys as headliners a couple of weeks ago, and I was also surprised how light the turnout was given their buzz this year. IDWTSYIH was my number two album of the year behind Deafheaven. They thankfully did NOT suck live when I saw them!

Also, I can't believe the love for Spiritbox here. I listened to that album twice, and it was so bland. Very formulaic, and emotionally flat. Not really metalcore either IMHO but what do I know 🤷

Probably an off night when I saw them, but I don’t care for the records either 🤷🏻‍♂️

It’s always good to have a reminder that the internet is not real life as far as how much hype an artist/band/whatever has online lol

  • One appearance from Zenith is disappointing but I'll take it 🙏🏻

    i submitted it🤝🏻

Legend, was my personal album of the year but I know I'm very biased towards them 🤣😅

  • I'm surprised by currents here, I'm just so not into them and the newest stuff really didn't hit for me personally.

I agree honestly. Stuff like this reminds me of how different music tastes are.

I'm well aware that my taste is less aligned with the majority of the sub, but it's weird to see the divide between original or original sounding metalcore and newer sounds only widening and that the newer sounds are taking over a term that was never intended to describe them.

I thought the ep was okay but like 7/10 at best… don’t think any of the current songs made my top 50 most listened songs of 2025.

That’s me with seeing all the hype vianova this year. Thought that album was absolutely ass

  • I just listened to The Callous Daoboys album the other day. I can’t believe I slept on that for so long.

  • A non-metalcore album winning the metalcore album of the year and sleep token placing above deafhaven is all you need to know about this sub’s taste. And i say that as a fan of Spiritbox. They’re clearly alt metal.

This sub is just a modern metal sub. May as well change the name on it so people who actually like metalcore can move on to a sub that actual represents their interests.

Yep. It's just about what has the best mass appeal. I like some of Spiritbox's stuff, but to me they're kind of cookie cutter metal band. It's something you'd show a friend who's not super into metal, but curious about the genre. It's more "safe" if you will, and not incredibly progressive or technical. I also think Tsunami Sea was a pretty mediocre album compared to their previous work, as well as other albums on this list. It's good, but not great, so I don't think it's deserving of top spots. It's more of an honorable mention imo.

  • Not a single Fox Lake mention. New World Heat blew my mind, I guess it's more Nu-Metal? Idk I thought Metalcore was my dom genre but very few of these track 🤷🏻‍♀️

Tbh I think a lot of this sub considers Fox Lake to be hardcore and not metalcore.

Really? I'm apparently not good at deciphering these thousands of sub genres lol I personally don't find them that hardcore. I dig tf out of them, but I'd consider Greyhaven much more hardcore.

  • A bit surprising to not see Deftones, Deafheaven nor La Dispute on the non metalcore AOTY category.

Also, this isn't much different from the Nocturnal Awards lol

  • Well well well Looks like the hall of fame bands continue to dominate. Also got 6/10 of the eligible bands correct for the top 10. Props to Spiritbox even if the album itself kinda missed for me.

    Edit

One-worded band names dominated with six of them making the top 10 list. Long album names made their presence known this year. This only the 3rd and 4th time an album that's a band's 10+ release has made the top 10. Fall and Spring dominated this year's top 10 by taking nine spots. Summer got one and Winter continues to not exist. 11-songs seems to continue to be the magic number as it takes half of the top 10 spots.

Lol I was about to tag you. Looks like you were right on aoty! Nice job.

  • Is this fr? Beside the acacia strain, deadguy, counterparts, orthodox, and a few more… who/what are these other bands? Huh?

    welcome to r/metalcore lol

insane how Balmora didnt get a single mention for any category

To be fair, their only output this year was 3-song (one of which was a re-recorded song from 2024) EP.

They’ll have an album out next year and will absolutely be talked about plenty around here.

  • Tsunami Sea wasn’t even in my top 3 albums for 2025. It was very mid and cookie cutter. Very strange to see The Acacia Strain, Dying Wish, and Stray From The Path so sparsely in these rankings :(

Stray From The Path and Stick To Your Guns were ROBBED

  • Not surprised at all lol

  • That dying wish call out isnt even the best "fuck you" of the year. Smh

The breakdown and call out list is genuinely woeful.

They have a ton of good breakdowns on that album, that's not the one I would've picked for sure.  The verse 1 breakdown on Heaven Departs is one of the best breakdowns of the year.

But my number 1 would go to Mugshot - Afore a waking nightmare.  What a wild breakdown

  • Fucking yawn

  • Can get behind a lot of this but no Deafheaven in non metalcore aoty is sad

  • This is only moderately better than the Nocturnal Awards unfortunately.

  • PALEDUSK W LETS GOOOO!!! I've been listening to them ever since they released their EP, they're making SUCH cool sounding stuff

  • Music taste with a Ph of 14🥱

  • What an absolute dogshit list. I realize that this shit is all just popularity contest bullshit and doesn't matter at all, but it's incredibly disheartening to not even see the sub's fucking picture listed under "most anticipated."

Just change the picture to whatever bullshit can represent all these shitty alt metal bands that play occasional breakdowns. We've strayed so fucking far from metalcore at this point that it's not funny,

  • Sleep Token 3rd in non metalcore album lmao horrible taste

  • Spiritbox is so overrated and you can't change my mind

I do think the recent things from them have been kinda meh for me personally, but I also prefer their older stuff pre Eternal Blue.

For me the reaction to Tsunami Sea was "eh, it's fine"

I also prefer their older stuff, but I definitely liked Tsunami Sea more than Eternal Blue.

I'm glad people are enjoying, unfortunately it just did nothing for me at all.

Eternal Blue was sort of a letdown to me when it came out, but I did like some of it (mainly the singles that came out way before the album).

I've still given their things a listen when they've released things, but I don't find myself seeking it out again after an initial listen, so my conclusion is just that their sound is not for me at this point. I still like to follow up when a new release drops just in case I did like it though.

I don't get how they're so big. The music isnt bad but it's not THAT good either.

Because tastes are subjective, and what might be not that good to you might be really good to others.

The music isnt bad but it's not THAT good either.

That's the secret sauce for mass appeal a lot of the time - be middling.

Completely agree. But so is half the bands on this list. It’s a bunch of mediocre shit that gets propped up.

They haven’t put out anything that interests me since Holy Roller, I can’t stand their formula now

  • [deleted]

He's definitely made a name for himself, but as a metalcore producer, this was not deserved.

  • A haven with two faces is not talked about enough- glad to see it in here

  • Imma be honest Varials deserved music video of the year for that single take shot in Where The Light Leaves

  • moderately better than the nocturnal awards, good enough

  • Grayhaven was pretty alright, otherwise I didn’t fuck with any other of the albums of the year lmao

  • Greyhaven should have every category they're listed in.

    For a post-hardcore album?

Scroll up to OPs post, everything listed that includes Greyhaven as an option should have them be number #1 imo.

I was trying to be kind of funny, but I also do think the new record is amazing and deserving of such praise.

Regardless of how good it is, it shouldn't be eligible for any category other than best non-metalcore record. That could be said about other prominent bands in the various catgeories too too.

I think you're mistaken, but it's okay we can agree to disagree 👍

  • Love that the daoboys are getting so much recognition. IDWTSYIH is a masterpiece.

  • Will Putney is God

  • Paledusk was so mid there is so much better Japanese metal bands

Why did you think it was mid? It’s my album of the year. Their sound is super unique and breaks the norm. But I will admit Japan has a killer year. Broken by the Scream, babymetal, Knosis, all banger albums.

Tries too hard to be different and falls flat in its attempt (for me) glad you enjoyed it though no hate to those who did

Fair enough. What were your top 3 of the year ?

I enjoyed it but it only came out like a month ago so I haven't listened to it more than once. Glad Broken By The Scream came in third but I don't know if that's because there were only 3 noms or not.

  • This is basically just r/PostMetalcore at this point. Tsunami Sea is a fine record but nowhere near the best of the year. Metalcore genuinely needs its own subreddit.

  • ‘Cascading over everyone and everything’ 🖤

  • Commenting to come back to this later!

  • Tsunami Sea wasn’t as good as Eternal Blue, but it was still solid. No Loss, No Love is still an S tier hype song.

  • Surprised Architect's not being mentioned more, especially with their song Elegy. I felt like it's definitely one of the best songs they've ever released.

  • Spiritbox taking AOTY, only for every other category to be dominated by landmarks, currents, and Daoboys. Lmao.

  • Crowquill, Long Goodbye and heavenscoldhands, hell yeah brother. Cool to see Instictive and Views from the Soyuz up there too.

Really loved what Erra and Greyhaven put out this year, Currents was pretty good as well

  • Spiritbox beating Daoboys and Vianova, just as predictable as Architects beating Rolo Tomassi and Vein in 2018.

  • Does everyone here get their taste from instagram, milquetoast ass list

  • We listen to some good stuff, my friends. ❤️

You listen to some g̶o̶o̶d̶ mid stuff, my friends.

  • Tsunami Sea as album of the year HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

And the others are fucking Landmarks, Greyhaven and vianova HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Currents winning a shit ton of categories, Dan fucking Braunstein as producer of the year, fucking LMAO.

But I’ll give you Crowquill, that EP was damn good.

  • All these countries and no Canadian album or artist of the year 🥀

if it makes you feel better Mike from Spiritbox is from BC and he writes pretty much all the music aside from the lyrics i think

I thought all of them except for the drummer were Canadian tbh lol

not sure about the drummer and bassist, but i know Courtney spent her teen years and on in BC as well but she's originally from the states

Josh Gilbert (bass) is definitely American

A Mourning Star should've placed somewhere for EP.

  • Thanks for doing this!

  • Currents being ALLLL over this makes me so happy

  • Hell yeah I am so happy to see Spiritbox win. What a great album, what an amazing tour

  • i was looking forward to seeing metalcore bands but wtf actually is this list , most arent even metalcore on here

  • Ngl those votes are probably botted or spam, especially the vianova votes. I say this even though I like some of their songs

I don' think the r/metalcore awards are important enough for anyone to bother doing all that.

We see time and time again in here that a lot of users prefer the non- or barely metalcore. A lot of these categories bear that out.

I've actually seen a lot of praise for Vianova, though

  • SLEEP TOKEN HAS NO RELATION TO METALCORE

I think the only thing they won is non-metalcore record of the year though

  • How did I miss the voting? Am I dumb??

Do you never check the ribbon at the top of the sub? Voting thread was in there for 2 weeks and there were two separate reminder threads in the interim.

I don't use the subreddit style in RES. So I just somehow missed the sticky then.

Everytime they do one of these I never realize they're doing it

  • Tour of the year was Killswitch/Fit For A King/Kublai Khan

  • Well, this was a lot worse than I thought it was going to be lmao.
