Oh it was a fun one! Not a direct argument of PhD work, but basically: A kid who "studies biology" told me my claim that AI cannot be sentient is "terrible research practices" (that I was a terrible researcher) and I should be ashamed of my education and that I have "no understanding of biology". I'm a machine learning oncolytic (so, biological) researcher. Literally machine learning and biology are my entire thing. I think, just maybe, maybe maybe, I know what algorithms and sentience are and maybe, just maybe, how they work.
As a highschooler, the majority of us know how stupid we are. Just because I’m into poli sci doesn’t mean I feel comfortable correcting someone who has spent years studying it, that’s absolutely ridiculous lol
I always said the key to true Intelligence is knowing when to defer intelligence. There are times when professionals are wrong, but it's best to approach that with inquiry and further research. There's many incredibly people I defer to regularly because they are far smarter than I. It's likelier they know more than me than I am correct about something in their field. Not always the case - the discernment is difficult! But you seem to have that respect of those in the field. Your knowledge is still incredibly valuable, but knowing when to listen to those who's knowledge is also valuable will make you an amazing poli scientist. You will learn so much more by realising others have intelligences you don't than by ever assuming you have all the intelligence. That makes you far ahead of many I know. Keep up your amazing studies and work!
