Book of hours, England ca. 1300 (Baltimore, Walters Art Museum, Ms. W.102, fol. 78v)

  • The Little Drummer Cat

(Based on the traditional song "The Little Drummer Boy")

    Purr-um-pum-pum-pum

    Purr-um-pum-pum-pum

    Purr-um-pum-pum-pum

    Come they told me, purr-um-pum-pum,

A new [kitten] king to see, purr-um-pum-pum,

Our finest gifts we bring, purr-um-pum-pum,

To lay before the king, purr-um-pum-pum,

    So to honor him, purr-um-pum-pum,

    When we come.

    Little [cat] too, purr-um-pum-pum,

Meow, I have no gift to bring, purr-um-pum-pum,

    That's fit to give a king, purr-um-pum-pum,

Shall I play for you, [on my claws] purr-um-pum-pum,

On my little [toy mouse], purr-um-pum-pum,

    For you to hear?

    [Mary] nodded, purr-um-pum-pum,

The ox and [lambchop] kept time, purr-um-pum-pum,

I played my [best bongo tapping] for him, purr-um-pum-pum,

[Then he smiled at me], purr-um-pum-pum,

    Me and my [paws].

Of course, the cat had to make up the rhythm from scratch.

    Happy Tuesday! ❤️

I have written several cat and dog parodies of classic rock songs. This speaks to my heart.
