I can sort of answer this! These kinds of paintings (almost exclusively of children) were done ahead of time by (usually) traveling artists. The figure was painted but didn’t have a head/face. Then the child’s face was added and it often resulted in the kid’s head being too big. Idk why they didn’t scale the head/face but it’s pretty universal in these paintings. It was a much cheaper method to getting your kid’s portrait done… with odd results.
Depending on the painter, I like to think that many of them were just doing it “good enough”. But yea most of those clothes are just weird and not weird for the era- just weird.
I don’t get creepy vibes at all. The cats are just being cats. I fact I love the fact that so many children had beloved felines back then, too. Hopefully though, the pals did get up to some mischief.
Cats are to blame for never staying still when you want them to. With no quick photography methods around, I can only wonder if some of those cats were replaced with stuffed ones for the session, Some look a lot like bad taxidermy.
Discount portraiture? They are just kids so they could be gone before they reach adulthood anyway. Why spend good gold for children and animals, am I right?/s

Machine Gun Cat projectiles are gross cold hairballs that will deter and defeat any enemy!
