(UPDATE) Got my hands on a big ass breaker bar and even then still had to really rag on it to get em off, surprised nothing snapped, shit was on there at MINIMUM over double the torque spec lol. Also no, the impact wasn't going the wrong way, just didnt have enough power.
(ORIGINAL) Tried for much longer than this snippet of course, no movement whatsoever. How are these so ungodly tight? This impact is on a full 5ah battery and should do 350 ft lb's breakaway torque no problem at all. Tried my (somewhat) long ratchet aswell, no movement. Am I missing something? Worried if this much aint enough, more will sheer off a stud.

Breaker bar and a cheater bar.
Definitely. Time to go full analog.
It's crazy how regular hand tools are more reliable, cheaper, work better a lot of the time, and build muscle and patience
Not even any of that. Dude just maxed out the leverage in his ugga-dugga. He needs a longer lever. It’s pure physics.
That's true, but still. There are bigger impacts on the market. I use a 1" impact daily changing tires on garbage trucks. Where the 3/8" impact in the video failed, a decent 1/2" impact will save the day.
Load* load arm = effort * effort arm.
And torque is proportional to radius squared. You will overwhelm the torque that the impact can provide very quickly. Also maybe spray some rust remover and let it sit.
Hell ya honestly living in the rust belt power tools usually just end up causing more damage

Raising the bar here
If the bar isn't bending you're just pretending
Bar none, the best advice
Bye bye lugs
They're already dead.
I wonder if he tried turning them the other way?
Hey u/Difficult_Fill7730 are you turning them counterclockwise?
Already confirmed in another comment yeah, it's not tightening i've made triple sure
Couldn't be that would be a rookie move everyone knows it's righty loosey, lefty tighty.
Unless you are in the Southern Hemisphere where everything is reversed
That’s how drivers side lug nuts were on some pickups in the 1970’s.
Yeah it looks like he’s tightening
They're loosening. The tool will rotate clockwise in this situation as it goes the opposite way to the direction the anvil would rotate if it could move.
Are.. are you guys stripping lugnuts, or am I misunderstanding? I've taken thousands of lugs off at this point, and I can't remember ever getting to the point of even being concerned that such a thing was a possibility.
Now I'm scared..

And my axe.

Get a proper breaker bar and at least 32" of something hollow and sturdy. Impacts are great at almost everything, but lugs/lug bolts tend to be a pain in the ass.
Jack handle
When my 40+ yo jack gave up, I kept the jack handle just for that reason. My 3/4” breaker bar fits nicely inside the handle.
Oh my god thank you
I went and got a 6 foot breaker for just this reason. Found one in the discount pipes at Lowe’s.
Just need a better impact
Plenty of times air won't even take them off. Sometimes you just need some good ol leverage
My 1/2" takes off semi lugs 🤷🏻♂️
But youre not wrong
In the video they look rusted to hell. My bet is somewhere in the Midwest with salt on the roads is making this a real pain
Get a better impact gun
Haven’t found anything the 1/2” dewalt won’t break, or break apart.
Are you sure your gun is on reverse? It kind of looks like it isn't.
It's trying to turn his hand righty tighty.
That means it's trying to go lefty loosey.
OP's got it going the correct way. 👌
Thank you, still getting plenty of people saying i'm tightening it lol.
[deleted]
I don't know about that. It takes a really powerful impact to torque your wrist. Even a butterfly impact is easy to one-hand. They just don't twist like a drill motor does.
I can easily one-hand my impact gun on my lug bolts. Electrics don’t hit quite so bad as air-powered ones.
lol yeah, made triple sure of that, thought i mighta had it goin the wrong way around when i first tried it.
Just to be sure, counter clockwise is off.
We tried to take the lug nuts off of a work truck once with wrench and 8 foot breaker bar. Literally 3 guys with all our weight only to find out when the tire tech showed up that they were reverse threaded and we were tightening them.
Yep spent 45 minutes at a junk yard trying to get a set of rims off an old Dodge. Old guy walked by for the third time and told us they were left hand threaded. Came right off after that.
I was about to say, “LEFTY LUCY!”
Wait... I've always known it as "Lefty Loosey", like to make it loose
What you got against Lucy?
Luuucy! You got some splainin’ to dooo.
Gotta love Lucy...
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!
She keeps pulling the football away when I try to kick it!
I'm well aware haha
Idk if I’m tripping out but that rust spot on the socket seemed to have moved a bit to the right
Try giving the trigger of the impact gun quick taps. The initial hit is usually the strongest. Sometimes you can get them loose if over tightened with that method.
Glad we confirmed that early 😂. I would absolutely follow other peoples way of thinking, a sturdy breaker bar, and cheater bar, extension, short socket on the special lug socket. If you dont weigh a lot leverage is your friend. When i was 18 - working at firestone i weighed 150 pounds, way under weight. Let me tell you when it came to getting off truck lug nuts that were torqued to 140-165lb-ft. I struggled so bad 😂 i had to get another co worker who was like 300 and he broke them like nothing lol.
You don’t do a test spin in your hand before setting it in?
It does look like it’s trying to tighten.
I downvoted to help balance it all out. 👍
I upvoted to annoy him more!
Somehow the proper answer is 2nd. Let's bump that up. RIP to those studs and lugs.
The fact this has so many upvotes reveals a lot about the "experience" of folk in this subreddit.
Have you tried hitting it with your purse?
I've been handling nuts for 86 years, this is the correct answer
Need more leverage. That little pea shooter isn't gonna do it, not with the setup you have removing all the torque.
350ft lbs is nothing, especially with a 2 long sockets that are loose fitting. Might as well hit it with your dick.
Get a breaker bar, a shorter socket to use on the key, give your balls a tug and get it done.
Breaker bar on splines. Not a good idea to impact those anyway
[removed]
I have a "more-than-suitable" torque m18 gun but still won't use it on lugs. Just get likely even a regular size bar and use your muscles, OP.
The next tool up can do 1200 ftxlbs.
Breaker bar. Long pipe... Be gentle.
I wish people would learn to use hand tools.
That extension is killing the available power of your impact wrench.
I figured this could be a possible cause, will have to search for a spline socket that fits direct on.
just use a breaker bar and elbow grease. its less convenient and easy but will work every time
Don't bother with that. Grab a breaker bar, put your current socket and spline adapter on it and place the jack underneath the breaker bar and use the jack to force the breaker bar up to loosen the nut.
You'll have over 2000ftlb of breaking force. You either break the nut loose or you break the breaker bar and you bring it to the shop to have them deal with it because you ain't getting that off yourself.
You don’t need that. A breaker bar with a cheater pipe and body weight will get it off. Maybe some penetrating oil because of the oxidation. Or get a 500ft lbs impact
PB blaster. Wait. Again. Wait. 2 pipes on a t-handle
That impact is probably just going to split the adaptor
I've had luck heating them up with a blow torch if that doesn't work.
Yeah, you can see by the second adapter most of the impact power is lost.
Thats a socket on a lug key, a necessary evil.
So as a noob, a tighter fit closer to the impact would make the biggest difference in this case?
Not really the distance, but having less play from the anvil in the impact to the lug nut. Jointed sockets are an example of this. You are using some of the available torque to spin multiple parts instead of putting most of the energy into the lug nut.
No, leverage and weight or a stronger impact makes the biggest difference in this case. No need to over complicate it
Unavoidable.
It's avoidable if you have the correct socket
https://a.co/d/6ss7NAh
You seem confused. First you said it was an extension, now it’s the socket?
Going from a deep to std socket won’t be enough.
Go get a ugga ugga, not a thattttttttþppppppppppppppppppppppppppp. Like, what is that little thing? Go get the wrench out of your spare tire well and put some ass into it.
Because of the loose fit between the socket and the adapter, you are loosing all benefits of the 'impact' portion of the impact. Shove a piece of paper in-between the socket and the adapter to get an actually tight fit, and watch it work the magic it was meant to.
Edit: also make sure you have the gun going the right way. I've made that mistake a few times :/
this - just get the proper socket and put it directly on your impact.
Your impact is too weak. Try a breaker bar.
Ditch the gun, get a breaker bar and a scaffold pole…. As Archimedes once said “Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it, and I shall move the world”. He’s also less famously know to have said “fuck… which bastard torqued up my wheel bolts, I’ve just snapped my locking wheel nut”
Hit it with your purse
have you tried just a little bit harder
I always use a breaker bar to break the lugs loose. I then use my impact driver to take them the rest of the way off. I always start them by hand, use my impact to take them most of the way down but final torque spec by hand
Unscrew it in the right direction, it will work better.
Hit it with your purse.
If you can’t get the lug nuts off, you probably can’t fix whatever it is you’re trying to fix.
The gun is definitely in reverse (grip kicks to the left). Gun just doesn’t have enough ugga. The extension also absorbs some of the hit, better with just a socket.
Break them loose with a breaker bar
maybe a good air driven air gun
Honestly, I think battery tools have effectively surpassed pneumatic tools by this point. I have yet to see a consumer grade air gun with more torque than my Milwaukee.
Looks like you're tightening them
Some prick at a big O tightened my lug nuts like that once. I used a breaker and the whole handle of a 3 ton jack and my 240 lb weight. I got 2 off and then just took it to another shop to get them off.
the adapter has enough play that it’s is allowing the internal impact mechanism to slip and not giving it full torque. You can actually buy torque limiting extensions to take advantage of this principle on purpose.
You need more impact.
You get a shit ton of torque loss from those lug keys. Do it by hand
Might be all the extensions. They reduce torque. What is that ugga dugga rated at?
Also, you using additional axle stands for safety?
Oh they will... You are not trying hard enough
350 ftlbs is pretty miniscule, I assume it's the hyper tough? They're pretty weak and using a breaker bar is usually more effective. Especially with the torque you lose with a spline key in a socket, you'll need a bigger impact.
Righty tighty lefty loosey
Use the Jack to push up on a breaker bar
Breaker bar and a long piece of steel/iron pipe that will allow you to extend the length of the breaker bar handle. This will allow you to put some major leverage into it with a longer handle.
BTW if you ever have a stuck fastener, sometimes you can help get it loose by very slightly hand-tightening it and then trying to loosen it again. It's a trick I wish I would have learned 15 years ago.
You shouldn't be using all those extensions, you will lose half of the torque from that impact wrench. Get a proper size socket.
You need a breaker bar your impact doesn't have enough power
Breaker bar. You’re a lot stronger than that impact wrench.
Hit it with your purse.
Always break them loose by hand
Definitely looks like you’re tightening them. Have fun getting them off without breaking the stud.
Make sure you have a full battery, put the lugnut key on each lug and hammer or mallet on each lugnut a bit to shock the rust and try the impact gun again, if that dont work just use a breaker bar if you have one
Need a real impact or breaker bar.
Heat
Change the direction 🤣🤣🤣🤭
Hit it with your purse
Get your weight up, then try again!
Drink beer
I ALWAYS break them loose with a cross-bar or a breaker bar and pipe. Then I use the impact to take them off. Same thing in reverse going back on. Don't hammer on it with the impact putting on or you risk stress breakage now or later. Just thread em down and give em a quarter turn with a bar so they're snug. Always worked for me. Only time you wanna be SUPER precise is with big ass diesels.
Breaker bar or the Hercules 20v with 1200 lbs of torque
You’ll want a friend to put the car in gear while you use the impact.
Make sure you have a 2nd friend video record and report back.
Did you say please?
Lol its the other way
He's tightening it
Looks like you are tightening instead of loosening..
Lugs be like that just get a breaker bar and a pipe and youll be done quicker than with an impact. Also impacts on studs can fuck them up so be prepared to swap em.
I would always use a breaker bar to break the nuts loose before fully jacking up the car.
If nothing else i need to remove the locking nut by hand anyway so i may as well do the rest too.
You’re tightening it
I think if you struggle to undo a simple wheel nut you have no place taking the car apart
Why is his hand and tool rotating clockwise? My guess is he is tightening the luggage nut. "Lefty loosy - righty tighty"
Have you tried hitting them with your purse?
A nice long breaker bar will either break it or fix it. Good luck.
Does everyone have the Milwaukee impacts just lying around?
You have too long of a socket adapter on your impact. You’re losing all your torque to break the wheel nuts free. Try a shorter thin walled socket
Did you try the other direction? It really looks like you're trying to tighten that... Lefty loosey righty tighty
Try the other way
The way your wrist is moving, it looks like the screw gun is turning rightwards, and I don't think those are left hand thread studs. Righty-tighty, Lefty-Loosy
That sounds like a weak impact probably 3/8 drive use a bigger impact or use a wrench and body weight
A shorter socket helps
Why does he have the car jacked up?
Wouldn't it be easier to try to take wheel lug nuts off?
Have you tried turning to the left?
I know this is late at 23 hrs but PLEASE USE PB BLASTER OR SOME sort of penetrative oil to loosen the rust. Someone def over tightened and/or didn’t lube the wheel studs before installation. Those lug nuts once stripped require a turbo socket. Not readily available (at least the good ones) normally.
Get a better gun/ battery or use a breaker bar.
Your break away power on your impact really sucks.
Its because youre using a cheap ass impact.
Use a breaker bar.
Give me a lever long enough and I can move the world!!!
Ever try using manual power? It's this new fangled thing that came along WAAAAAAY later than the impact you've got there.
What did people do before they had technology?!?! How did anyone survive?!🤣🤣🤣🤣 I've got an impact that won't even budge a lugnut after it's first use. Kinda defeats the purpose though, if you ask me. I wasted money on it, as did you, my apparently. Haha! Time to use the tools that are meant to do the job. They will come off!
So many people here acting as if the lugs are welded on but probably are over tightened or more likely tool is underpowered.
Take the extension off for starters. That kills any power you get then try again
Who would put them on so tight?
I can effortlessly remove my 95 ft/lb torqued wheels easily with a 2 feet breaker bar
Soak those things in PB blaster to soak overnight. Spray more PB blaster, Dry it out with compressed air, that will hopefully help with all the little rust bits cought in there. Add more PB blaster to lubricate, as you loosen them with a breaker bar with a pipe on it. Lift with you legs not your back.
Have you considered lefty loosey, righty tighty? They won’t come off if you’re tightening them
Use a short socket
If all else fails you can break the studs off by using a socket and a long extension bar on the lug nut to rock it back and forth until it snaps off. Then you can install a new stud and lug nut. A second option is to drill through the lug nut and completely remove the stud within. Most rims allow you to rock the stud and snap it off. Some high dollar rims require you drill out the stud. Bottom line is lug nuts become stuck because idiot tire changers hammer them on with impact guns instead of using a proper torque wrench to tighten them. Impact guns pull and deform the threads between the stud and nut making it almost impossible to break the nut free. Good luck.
The adapter key to socket lets it rattle and deflect all the impact force. Gotta use a breaker bar
Use a breaker bar, they break shit that isn't wanting to break
Is it set to off
Take the handle off of your jack and put it around your ratchet handle to make a poor man's breaker bar.
Leverage (length of the handle/lever) is way better than ugga duggas at removing highly torqued or rusted bolts.
Once the nuts are broken free, then go back to the impact.
I just had the same problem, solution is put the socket on the lug. Grab a 4 pound sledgehammer/mallet and hit the socket afew times.. then try to loosen the lug, then try to tighten it, then reverse again. And keep going back and forth. You’ll see it break the seal. It’ll eventually come off… try it. Worked for me.
Breaker bar
Go for a drive and heat up the rotors really bad. Pull over, ugg dugg, squrit, dugg ugg drive home and do your work.
If not do that hammer deal I just read in the comments.
Dude I have those same lug nuts they absolutely suck. I always torque mine to spec and they still get stuck. This year it broke two of the studs off when I was trying to remove them. Wish ya luck and I’d recommend getting a different set 🫡
Can’t be tight if it’s liquid
Try 1500 ugga’s
Try soaking overnight with penetrating oil
Do you use the breaker bar while the tire was grounded for more support? Sometimes shops tighten them too much and having that extra support helps.
Make sure the torque setting is on the highest setting (if it isn’t already). If it is, then a big ass breaker bar
Spray penetrating fluid on it and leave it for a day then put a deep impact socket on the lug and hit it a few love taps with a sledge hammer then get the breaker bar and they’ll come loose. If that doesn’t work then just hit it harder
Get a real impact on there.
Charge the battery
My van has opposite thread on the passenger side . Caused no end of hilarity before I found out. Could it be this as it was also Japanese? 3.5 tonne though so probably not
Go to a bar and have a drink first.
Breaker bar, elbow grease and pb blaster. I use my body personally dont usually have an issue
Red loctite
Maybe you just have a city impact. Mine will get them off may unscrew or may break but my impact will pull them
Breaker bar with an extension. Go slow and smoothly with the pressure.
When in a struggle, use your teeth.
Try going forward and backward. Sometimes that breaks them loose.
Left loose right tight
Your not supposed to use an impact gun on splined or locking wheel nuts, the hammering effect will crack the spline drive or wear down the pattern on the lock nut
Cocaine
Leverage from a longer bar. Break em loose with your arms
That impact sounds weak AF
breaker bar + Lowe’s/Home Depot 3-5ft 1 inch pipe.
Those tuner nuts will be the end of you, use a breaker bar and leverage and great care, then get real lug nuts.
Need more ugga in your dugga
Loosen them without the jack. And then jack the car up and remove.
