It's white and boring sure, but that's nonetheless better than some of the not boring properties we've all seen. Mostly symmetrical. Window generally line up. Roofline makes sense. I've seen way worse.
I mean, aside from the sin of the millennial grey flipper's special interior design, it's a pretty bland and inoffensive house. Architecturally, the outside is relatively well balanced and doesn't really have any of the mcmansion tropes (although that off center second story window is atrocious).
I think integrating the portico into the main volume of the roof is a major mistake that cheapens the look. Would have been better to have a separate volume to make it look intentional, as it is it looks like someone carved away the house to make the front porch. I also think that the columns are out of scale and there’s no hierarchy with how they connect to the roof. Kind of like a slice of cheese resting on toothpicks.
It’s bad right now, but at least a few of these proportions issues are fixable. Wall off that side of the portico so you don’t have that weird pizza slice, add an entablature, and adjust the columns. Add a proper railing, if there must be plinths. Maybe some engaged columns or pilasters to break up the wall expanse?
Nope, that's a pretty horrible location too. Nothing to speak of in Augusta, and it's gonna get moldy pretty hard the moment a hurricane system or flood raises the levels on that lake a mere 20 feet from the house. When the mosquitos post, you're gonna have problems, or just get eaten alive. That... and it's in Georgia. Hot. The trees provide a modicum of sound shielding from the road and privacy. But there's also limbs that are going to endanger the house and your vehicles in a storm. That one tree at the corner near the Gazebo on the lake is leaning in the direction of the house. If that comes down, it's going right down on the roof. Speaking of the roof, look at the leaves all over that left wing near the water. Leaves all over the roof. Leaves in the rain gutters if they're not the shielded type. I see a pool over there. Under the trees. Meaning leaves in the pool all the time. And it bears repeating. When it's hot swimming weather, you're gonna get eaten alive by mosquitoes.
SoCal native and it just looked pretty haha but I totally get this point. That water looks supppper stagnant and you probably have to add your own trout or whatever.
Eh, kinda disagree. Don't love it, but definitely don't hate it. It's mainly just new, give some of that landscaping a chance to come in (and implement some further tasteful additions), and I think it will look quite nice. While I personally prefer a place to have more of a defined personality, I also understand the philosophy of presenting a blank slate, so the monochromatic theme may be intentional.
I was thinking the same thing with landscaping. If this house was painted a color besides white or gray and trimmed out with some decent landscaping, it would be pretty nice.
You're right. Most people would be fine with it. As for the "horrible" crowd, I think I understand their reasoning. It's not that it's offensively ugly like your average haphazardly slapped together McMansion. What's horrible is its soul-crushing blandness. It's so lacking in any kind of warmth or character. So devoid of human touch
that just looking at it feels like a personal attack.
Sure thats true, but to be fair its also completely empty. Obviously its going to look devoid of human touch like that. Competent decorating (so, you know, not me) could add a lot to that dreary building.
Most people are happy with fast food too. And, when you compare this with actual architecture, this house is the equivalent of Burger King compared with high cuisine.
Sure. Like I said, its not a great house by any stretch. But if a large house with lots of light and floorspace and no immediatelly apparent structural issues is already "horrible" .. what about the really horrible houses? If horrible starts at ugly then ya'll haven't seen truly horrible houses.
This is a masterclass on sucking the joy out of a vacation. It's just so sad and white and boring
It's white and boring sure, but that's nonetheless better than some of the not boring properties we've all seen. Mostly symmetrical. Window generally line up. Roofline makes sense. I've seen way worse.
Sure, but "better that the hall of mirrors at the county fair" is not exactly a high bar...
Yes, "white and boring" means that it's easy to infuse with your own personality. Paint is cheap and makes a big difference.
Unfortunately, there is no such easy fix for the gaping, boxy spaces.
Ever heard of furniture? ROFLAMO
They may have meant on the exterior where there are large square boxes of empty white space between the windows and such.
Yeah, but it's honestly not that bad... There's symmetry, also carefully placed decorative bushes, or even climbing plants, would do wonders!
Oh yeah, climbing plants is definitely what it needs! The one window is offset tho above the front door which is irritating.
Hold my beer.
Definitely an OK house...
You warned us but I still gasped when I saw pic 3.
It's like a double wide with add on's.
When two double-wides love each other very much….

Columns shouldn’t just go into the roof. They need an architrave (beam) to visually support it. Otherwise, they look like they’ll just punch through.

Exactly. Some plants and paint could go a long way.
FR. This is would classify as a just ugly. Doesn't feel like enough is going on to call it a mc mansion.

his is why Massachusetts has set backs to building next to waterways. In order to make the environment live able, you need to destroy what's there.
If you find a beautiful spot and build a house on it, the beautiful spot is gone, and you have a house.
Those interior pics aren’t real: too well & uniformly lit, and look at that round table abomination in the later kitchen pics.
That said, the outside pics alone carry the weight for “bad house”. Should you take pics when your yard is already flooded?
is it an airplane hangar
honestly looks like it was designed by a mormon man to house his sisterwives.
I can fix her.
That's the spirit!
How does it manage to look so trashy while probably using expensive ish materials
This is ugly, it isn’t a McMansion though.
Those big off-center windows!
I dont care for the location on bit either -mosquito heaven
The house is made entirely of garages. Thanks. That made me laugh 🤭
Looks like it is a funeral home.
looks like it will flood frequently

I hate it so much.
It has, how’s the saying, g—it has bones.
Photo 3 reminds me of my first build in Conan exiles
not often does a photo make me gag
pic #3 really does cause a physical reaction
Not a McMansion - just a very blah, drab, uninteresting house.
Can’t even be rehabbed. Best to tear it down and start over.
From the outside it looks like a mortuary w added on space on each side.
The inside looks like someone’s idea of remodeling is removing all the walls - add matching flooring -boom - job done .
Take the fridge, leave the table
Ugly, lifeless, but not quite horrible.
I am pretty sure that this is a barndominium. I’m an inspector and have seen several similar ones.
Not a mansion
neither are most mcMansions lmao this is day 1 stuff
Idk what 90210 zip code you live in but this isn’t a freaking boat house, this is a sizable million dollar home
This is essentially two trailers parked on either side of a pretty cookie cutter 2-story house. Big does not equal mansion.
Bland is the word. Perhaps with furniture?
The outside is terrible but you could turn the inside into a unique space
I wonder if the outside could be fixed with enough plants. Specifically, climbing vines. The sort that could cover the walls.
$1.2M but the house is only mid-rent effort.
Needs a makeover. Something needs to be done to the outside, including landscaping.
Tbh. This is salvagable. 80% by wall paint and carpets alone.
beautiful house
I feel like most people would be more than happy to live there? Its not a great house by any stretch but horrible is a bit much.

I meant the outside. The inside would be comparatively easy to fix. Starting with paint.
Most people are happy with fast food too. And, when you compare this with actual architecture, this house is the equivalent of Burger King compared with high cuisine.

do you know what sub you're in?
Looks at first photo, ooh pretty it! It can't be that bad-- oh good heavens!
It’s pretty inside. The outside could look better, some siding, some paint and trim maybe.
This is a perfectly fine house, are you high on first-world-problems?
