New Cadillacs are pretty sweet. The CT4 and CT5 are excellent cars, their new electric vehicles have a really cool art-deco aesthetic, and they are fairly reliable.
What I've taken from Arvin Haddad's YouTube channel, is how little of these homes are used. Warehouse sized homes embracing cheap, tasteless design that are generally discomforting to live in. More a ploy for taxes than residential structure.
Once upon a time I worked on McMansions just like this and one of (many) criminal parts was the roof space was entirely decorative: In order to achieve those shapes they'd used a ton of pre-manufactured trusses, so there was virtually no livable space in the attics; it was a huge, empty web of structural supports.
I've spent a good amount of time doodling in "chief architect" which is a pro software tool
one of the things it does is let you treat the roof as basically just a driven design element - you can lay out the house floors and it'll construct the necessary roof for you after you choose some basics like slope, hipped, etc. - then it'll take care of modifying the roof when you do things like add random corners
a few of these layouts pretty much look like the architect did that, let the software spit out the roof, and dgaf about cleaning anything up
it's literally treating the roof as an afterthought, presenting some renders to the client, and then everyone is apparently totally ok with a batshit crazy truss order (with some poor truss guy trying to stem the bleeding, and the framers filling in blanks too) and then $100-200k to the roofers
edit: adding random low slope roof sections when things just aren't making sense is just, chef's kiss
It took me quite a while to realize these were not all views of the same house, as if I were supposed to make spatial sense of all the different views of the strange roof lines and elevations of one house from ever changing perspectives. I mean I LOVE the game Monument Valley, I think my brain was hoping this was just a new version of it.
This is such a weird artifact from home design software just pooping out a roof for any floorplan rather than starting with a reasonable roof design and tetris-ing rooms underneath it. Think how much cost, complexity, and leaks this has led to for so many homeowners.
My grandmother is always impressed by a house with a lot of roof lines. Something to the effect of, "All of those roof lines cost money. That's an expensive house."
That being said, she said they look expensive, not good. Not good taste, just a lot of disposable income.
15 is honestly not that bad. Don't get me wrong it's still awful, but it looks less like the architect was blinded in both eyes midway through planning the house.
So maybe there is something to trickle down economics. Rich people buy or build stupid stuff. Hire folks to build, repair at above market rates. Roofers get rich too.
Picture number 4 was RL Thornton's house, built in 1927. That feels a little like cheating in a McMansion sub...not sure I can explain why. I know the trusses that make McMansions possible didn't exist back then 🤷🏻♂️
On the other hand, people aren’t helicopters or drones. Disregard each of those photos that’s from the sky instead of the ground. I imagine all they care about the aesthetics of the roofline is what they see when they pull up in the driveway in their giant SUV.
It would be like somebody living in a fancy skyscraper condo in New York City and caring about the mechanical equipment on the roof.
Roofing contractors must all be driving around in Cadillacs here.
Giant trucks, like jacked-up Rams. They go door-to-door offering “free inspections.” 🖕🏼🖕🏼🖕🏼🖕🏼
Nothing like a good assignment of benefits to jack up insurance rates
A contractor friend claimed those houses go on the market as soon as the owners realize the cost of a new roof.
So you believe they can afford the house but not the roof?
Brother owns a roofing company in Dallas, can confirm. Common hail storms and insurance companies picking up the tab is nearly free money.
I know a couple people with different roofing companies in Dallas. They for real drive Lambos
simply finding the source of a leak must be complicated.
r/TonyHawkitecture would love this....
Seriously, i hope to be reincarnated as a roofer for these McIdiots
And truss designers.
Cadillacs are the mcmansions of cars. Something that tries to pass itself off as luxury even though it's overpriced mediocrity
New Cadillacs are pretty sweet. The CT4 and CT5 are excellent cars, their new electric vehicles have a really cool art-deco aesthetic, and they are fairly reliable.
Vehemently disagree. The new models are fantastic and SuperCruise is the best hands-free driving product on the market.
It's called Big Roof on this sub

All of these homes look like the lair of a villain in a Buddy Cop movie.
Except #13 - it looks like something that would give H.P. Lovecraft nightmares and make M.C. Escher puke....
This makes me want to buy stock in companies that make shingles.
More hips than Shakira

Lol, it's because of the pound sign, hashtag, whatever you want to call it, that I'm assuming you put before 13.
There are at least 5 different ways to get in just from this perspective. Holy fuck, I’d be texting from the driveway saying “Please come get me”
Looks like some architects are in bed with the roofing mafia.
These aren’t architects, they are cad monkeys who don’t even plan out how that roof even exists! 😂
cad monkeys. nice
What is happening under that much roof?
Empty space with no use and no windows?

I’m wondering the same. Are they keeping a pet giraffe up there or something, bizarre.
Exactly! Omg

Thank you! I'm still shocked that it is so big! The photo you showed me looks like 2 roof's structures one on top of the ohter.
Where I come from, it's usualy just like this:

Shingles, Shingles!!!!
Meet Shingles in your Area
People with money in Dallas particularly don’t seem to know what to do with it, not that I would, but it’s funny
For sure. Lots of nouveau riche here.

Yes to this - 💯💯💯 just no one cares or questions the roof madness!!
Love that the house in the second slide has a…void in the bottom section
I wonder what they were thinking. Is it a stagnant mosquito breeding ground every day of the year?
Seriously, I have a few questions for the owners lol
Pic 8: You want attic space? I’ll show you some attic space.

Why do they do that? It generally looks bad and must be expensive to build and prone to leaks.
I think people think it's fancy. Hence, the proliferation of McMansions. They're copies of real architecture, but they get 70% of it wrong.
Ah yes, ye olde origami rooflines.
This is such a weird artifact from home design software just pooping out a roof for any floorplan rather than starting with a reasonable roof design and tetris-ing rooms underneath it. Think how much cost, complexity, and leaks this has led to for so many homeowners.
What a terrible timeline in which to have functioning eyes
Oh my God #10 is egregious. Such a shame too because it looks like a really pretty driveway there with a bridge over the creek
Nothing says “tacky” like an actual crennelated tower.
11 is diabolical
it looks so bad lol
The Sims music suddenly came to mind. Mist be reticulating splines.
That first one is something else.
Do they want some house for their roofs?
That's a lotta soup!
Nightmare fuel for PV installers…
The pedestal-columns of #4 lol
With gargoyles on top! And the crenelated turret. This is a house that doesn't take itself too seriously. I kind of like it!
My sister used to live in the DFW area and the endless suburban landscape with the massive peaked roofs was bewildering to me.
My grandmother is always impressed by a house with a lot of roof lines. Something to the effect of, "All of those roof lines cost money. That's an expensive house."
That being said, she said they look expensive, not good. Not good taste, just a lot of disposable income.
crap, crap, overpriced crap, crap, crap......#13 is something that would give H.P. Lovecraft nightmares...crap...crap...crap...
It would be cool to frame some of those roofs. I love a challenge.
I kinda like 5, like the did try with the turret
No mountains but still a lot of peaks...🤣
wtf are theses houses
Fun theme - lots to offer out there!
15 is honestly not that bad. Don't get me wrong it's still awful, but it looks less like the architect was blinded in both eyes midway through planning the house.
What neighborhood in Dallas has a lake???
McMansion hell
That roof is several 3D clipping errors happening all at once.
As much as I dislike all of these, I would be delighted to have the house with a driveway with a little bridge over a creek. That's kinda dope.
4 makes me want to watch Harold & Maude
nightmare fuel- any of those rooflines would keep me up at night
It is Peak Dallas.
As much as we hate on these, I like the variety more than the boxes we have smooshed together in California.
So maybe there is something to trickle down economics. Rich people buy or build stupid stuff. Hire folks to build, repair at above market rates. Roofers get rich too.
Wow. I am from the northeast… This is what Dallas really looks like?
Not gonna lie, #12 (the one with the balcony on the right) looks kind of cool.
It's also the closest to what you would consider a normal-sized house. Although you could chop off the left 1/3 of it and I'd be happy.
Sorry dude. I’m in!

The roofline fits the theme imo!
True...amazing they did that back then
It’s a thing there, but why?
