Is this an appropriate sub to discuss sports radio in the Seattle market? I am asking because I happened upon KJR this morning and heard the new host - the one who got in deserved hot water over some unkind words about RRS.
Anyway, this morning he said some things about sympathizing with people who stress or grieve during the holidays and I respected that.
That RRS polemic was not a good way to ingratiate himself to the M's fan base. However, I do absolutely believe people should get more than one chance to redeem themselves and be praised when they do something well. It's all too easy to find things to criticize.
Anyway, if he's reading this, I just want to say "hats off!" for that segment today. Very nice.
I also ask if this is the right place because sports radio itself is definitely a subject matter worth discussing in and of itself. I mean, like, for example, how many commercials can they run before they start losing listeners?
“Back in the day”. Mitch in the morning, softy mid day, Groz & Gas… was peak sports radio, that was and still is unmatched. By the way for those that don’t know and care, Mitch has a great podcast, Mitch Unfiltered.
I didn't know that about Mitch. Thank you!
Before you listen, go listen to episode #1… he comes clean and explains his incident.
On his 7th year of the podcast. It’s developed into a damn good show.
Agreed on all points. I moved away from Seattle 15 years ago and listen to the Sunday episode of Mitch Unfiltered every week (started with episode 1 as has been suggested, would recommend if that part of his story means anything to you). He’s still in great form and the show feels like a slice of home.
Who remembers TMan on the late night show?
I listen pretty much every morning to Brock and Salk on 710am (I use the app). Find it fun, funny, insightful, not bigoted, and helps me stay apprised of the maneuvering of the Ms and Hawks. I enjoy Bump and Stacey too but I work when they’re on so only hear them via podcast. Not as big a fan of Wyman and Bob in the afternoons - just a bit too slow paced and sleepy or something. But I wholeheartedly recommend B&S for a good Seattle sports market fix!
I live in San Diego and would listen to local sports radio down there and didn't realize how bad sports talk is and how good a show like Brock and Salk is. Fun, funny, insightful, and not bigoted is totally correct, but the thing that really jumps out to me is the level of guests they get regularly.
Other radio shows might get a random former player or a local reporter to give their insight, but B&S get Daniel Jeremiah, Jeff Passan, Joel Klatt, Sheil Kapadia and so much more. They had Al Michaels on! What this shows me is as much as you might dislike Brock or Salk, they are well liked and respected by their piers and will come onto their show.
Not many radio shows can say the same thing.
Totally! And the insight those guests bring is awesome but what’s I really love is when they dump all over Salk (Passan in particular). Hilarious.
I miss the old lineup with Howdy and Kyle. That was peak.
Brock and Salk on the Seattle Sports app is spot on. Highly recommended.
Really I personally like them the least of all three shows. Salk complains alll the time and Brock talks like everything he says needs to be some grand hype speech…. Do you guys not get that at all?
Totally get that, I actually enjoy the interplay. Salk cracks me up and I don’t find him particularly complain-ey. And they don’t take themselves seriously, they regularly make fun of each other and themselves. Also really like Lyle and Maura. Idk I just enjoy it on my morning commute.
KjR programming is nuts with their commercials.
20 min. - Content 10 min. - Commercials 10 min. - Content 10 min. - Commercials 5 min. - Content 5 min. - Commercials
25 min. of commercials per hours is crazy
Unfortunately that's typical for talk radio. 35-40 minutes of actual content per hour is the norm, has been for years.
Also their baseball content is complete ass. They legit don’t know ball- they are football people mainly (a couple exceptions).
I have heard some absolutely egregious takes, especially with off-season content.
You don't listen to Chuck and Buck? Maybe those are your exceptions, but they talk ball when other shows are wall-to-wall football. Both are knowledgeable, I don't always agree, but they knowledgeable.
Yes. I feel the same. Doesn't it eventually eat itself? People tune out because of the commercials and so ratings go down and thus less advertising. I don't know how this model could possibly work. Apparently it does, though. I find it mostly unlistenable. I'll tune in and if there's content, I'll stick around and then change it when the commercials come. Maybe I'll try again a week later. Rinse, repeat. I used to listen all the time.
Marc James (Benarzyk) is trash.
The story of him texting a girl over months and not getting the hint, and then pulling the 'do you know who i am' card. This got him suspended. Go check out his text messages to really see how trash this dude is.
KRJ had great moments 15 or 20 years ago, but it is just awful now.
Forgot to mention him saying "go woke, go broke" multiple times on air. Nothing like getting alt right taking points infused with your sports radio talk.
Was going to say, after occasionally accidentally flipping over, not realizing it was his block i never make it more than a few minutes before he says something about the "woke wackos" or whatever. Dude there is no shortage of right-wing radio in Seattle, if anyone wanted to listen to that crap, we would tune into 770, 570, 820, 1050, 1090, 1680, or half of the time on 97.3 . Leave the god damn sports stations in our market out of it.
Oh I forgot about that one. When all is lost, start an alt-right grift.
Yuk.
I got some grief for calling him RRS, so beware !
Can't mess with Hyphen :)
He is awful- after Pucket left, I left the only host that is entertaining is Softy and he was always a bit much but pretty pretty good. The morning show is awful, the next guy is awful Ian is awful but seems like a good dude. I switched to 710 KIRO - which I use to think it was boring but I really like Bump and Stacey and the others are growing on me.
Can't do Softy, Dick Fain is such an arrogant piece of trash. I disagree about Chuck and Buck, it's for me the best show on the station, I usually can't listen to Ian just cause time of day. I still listen to Pucks show 2-3 days a week, I like the structure of it and it's easy to digest.
Where can I hear Pucks show?
Yes Fain is a dimwit who is also a know it all, I told you so, aren’t I cool dude.
Youtube, Spotify, anywhere that carries podcasts.
I like em all except Brock and Salk. Salk complains a lot and Brock talks like everything he says is some epic speech….
Only time I'll listen to them is if Passan is on. And it gets a bit tiring how often Brock has to make football comparisons.
Lol spot on with Brock. He’s always delivering an Emmy worthy performance, like a news anchor rather than a guy talkin’ sports.
He’s going against Bump and Stacy on 710. He’s not gonna get any listeners and be moved along in no time
For those of us that don’t follow that closely, who is the host and what did they say about Hyphen?
I read the article so you don’t have to:
Dude - Mark James
Offense - Made shameful remarks regarding Hyphen’s accent.
Punishment - Was embarrassed online.
Hyphen responded that he’d never heard of the guy and then said some classy Hyphen shit along with some Australian flags and kangaroo emojis.
Marc James is the host and he said he couldn’t take a baseball commentator with an Aussie accent seriously and that RRS shouldn’t be a commentator because of his accent.
https://awfulannouncing.com/mlb/seattle-radio-host-mocks-mariners-analysts-accent.html
MJ has also said "go woke, go broke!" on multiple occasions, sounding like your typical alt-right political influencer or Joe Rogan wannabe. Also his East Coast shock jock shtick is tiresome.
Can’t be woke, can’t be sleepy, what state of consciousness is allowed with these people??
Sports talk radio is the original brainrot.
I don’t think so. It’s free and often, very insightful. Especially, regarding local teams. I enjoy the interviews (lately McDonald) and analysis that we don’t get from ESPN/FOX.
I’d say this is a fine forum for it, I doubt the Seattle subs will care about it or even pay attention.
I don’t know what was said about Ryan Rowland smith though. Can you shed more context there? A link?
Here’s a post talking about: https://jimmoorethego2guy.substack.com/p/new-kjr-host-rips-ryan-rowland-smith
New KJR host rips Ryan Rowland-Smith and Mariners blogger Luke Arkins
This reads like a producer on KJR trying to get more attention and ears listening to the show -“happened upon KJR this morning.”
The host is an annoying talking head. Wish KJR had selected someone else to lead that time slot. Just my opinion.
KJR has had some great people and good radio hosts (shout out to Puck and Ian), but their history is ripe with toxic and offensive comments by other on-air personalities of the worst kind without their leadership handling it with the appropriate level of consequence. It’s in no small part why these things keep happening. The RRS comments were just the latest. Nothing wrong with an individual like the host responsible for this comment having a chance to redeem themselves, but as an organization and radio station they’ve had too many chances so I refuse to listen ever again. And in case this thread gets the attention of the station or listeners who missed it: this all started for me when Hugh Millen was on air talking about an NBA game and how much he disliked James Harden and “he wouldn’t get on a plane with the guy, he looks like a terrorist” - something the station never acknowledged and Millen was off air for a week before being back to spewing trash takes. Garbage organization.
Jason Pucket now does his own podcast daily, and it's great. Highly recommend.
RRS is what?
Assuming it’s Ryan Rowland Smith.
What'd they say about hyphen?
I only listen from 9:30am-10am and 5:30pm-6pm and have no idea what this is about lol
I honestly read this as an attempt to be a shcok jock and generate some buzz even negative about the show. IE any news is better than no news.
I used to listen to Danny, Dave and Moore each day on 710. When they broke that team up, I had to bounce.
I remember Moore wrote an interesting column about getting fired by 710. I think he still writes for the Kitsap Sun. Mike Salk was the villain in the story.
what’s RRS? Ryan Roland Smith is Hyphen
I can’t believe that station is still in business. KJR died years ago.
I'm a bit surprised that there is no love for former Mariner Bucky on KJR. I like the morning show. Chuck is a baseball guy and so is Bucky. I didn't listen to MJ often. Also, don't let sports talking heads raise your blood pressure.
Yeah now I'm curious about which host? I sometimes listen to Chuck, Buck, and Ashley on my drive in to work. I like them because they seem to take a more lighthearted/funny approach to sports talk radio vs. Brock and Salk on 710 who can be too serious I feel.
Thanks
I quit listening to 710 several years ago unless it's a game brodcast. Too vanilla, not enough passion. I do think Brock & Dave are good dudes, who'd I'd love coaching my son's. I love Softy's blatant homer takes and passion. Ian is not energizing, but has solid takes and opinions. MJ... ehh, morning show is pretty generic, but i only catch 10 minutes on my commute. Sports radio, & sports in general are supposed to be devicive & controversial. Much like comedy. Hate is a big part of Fandom, that's why I partake and don't get worked up about crazy statements. Oh yeah, fuck the Ducks!
Calling him RRS instead of Hyphen? Was this post made by the guy who was conveniently unnamed in question?
Oh. So very sorry! I don't know the DJ's name because I seldom listen. I just remember he got in hot water because he spoke I'll of Hyphen. (Whew.) I see You're not the only one who didn't care for my abbreviation for Hyphen. My bad. Wasn't my intention to upset you.
Friday mornings on Puck Sports are incredible. Chris Eagon joining Puck and Jim Moore is a must listen. Also when huge news breaks with WSU, there is no one I want to listen to more than Puck and Jim.
Maybe a hot take here but I don’t care for hyphen as a talking head either. The accent yes, it can be troublesome to understand but moreso is his pacing and mumbling.
