It’s been awhile since I watch this show, so forgive me if I get something wrong but this has been bothering me for awhile even if I liked the show.
I personally found the portrayal of the incestous abuse between Erin and John to be very lacking because it felt like it was just there for shock factor instead of being important part of what Erin went through and how abusive incest can be and how it will affect people; especially teenagers like Erin.
I get that this is a murder mystery but I still feel like we weren’t given enough time to understand who Erin was as a person and why John did what he did and the twist at the end didn’t really work for me because it felt distracting and handle with little care. Not trying to attack people but I wish the creators had talk to incest victims to really do a better representation of the topic.
Yes, it really grossed me out how it was framed as “an affair” rather than disgusting abuse of a poor grieving child.
Yea, I was really taken back by the few times Erin and John were mention together it was just called an “relationship” instead of straight up grooming. Obviously the show doesn’t want you to think John was in the right for what he did but still it felt sloppy and I felt frustrated with the way some people seems to to called Erin an slut or she was willing because she looked happy in that photo. I know it’s just a tv show but for all the things this show got right, I don’t get why this seems so underdeveloped.
I did think that we’re meant to realize John is a sociopath and the whole family was tremendously dysfunctional, but so much more could have been done I agree. Cailee Spaney is SUCH a good actress, too.
The whole entire family was toxic and I definitely wanted to see more of that but if you did that the twist would be so much more obvious, so I go back and fourth on this. I wish we got too see more of Erin and learn about her tho
Agreed. I watched the series twice, being a native of Delco, and I also feel like they opened story arcs that went nowhere. It felt like a season 2 was warranted but apparently not.
Like what happened to Billy’s family?
Right! Or what about Richard Ryan? Does he and Mare develop a deeper relationship? What about the other missing girl, Hilary??!
It’s been a long time since I watched but doesn’t one of the girls mention that Hilary had been with them and helped her while she was getting off drugs, but was ultimately killed after getting pregnant or something along those lines? I can’t remember if she ever explicitly says her name but I recall it being strongly implied it’s the other missing girl. Could be wrong though since been a while!
I apparently need to watch this again because I don’t remember the incest storyline at all???
Erin and John are first cousin once removed. For me that’s still incest.
That was the whole conclusion/crime 🫠
Lmao I watched the series a few years ago when it was new. I’m barely remembering a lot of it, so it’s time for a rewatch! Which is great for me because I need something to watch. Someone explained and I’m vaguely remembering but yeah lol… time to watch again!
I just finished the series and was shocked that there was not more attention given to the incestuous rape. It’s bad enough Erin was his niece, but also at the time she must’ve been about 15 because she was murdered at 17 and DJ looks to be almost 2 years old. That’s not something that happens in isolation. You don’t just wake up one day and decide to rape your underage niece. It feels like more sympathy was given to John into his son Ryan, then to the girl who was murdered.
