An interesting argument I’d never been sure on was ā€œare there more people or more buildings in the world?ā€ Because sure there are lots of buildings that many people live in, but there could easily just as many that no one lives in. If the map number is really accurate then interesting, but like… how could it be? Have they actually counted every little shed in every field? Every outhouse?

    30 points Pandelein

A lot of people don’t have buildings at all. Like, a lot a lot. About 1.6B estimated to be without housing or shelter.
Many families live in one building.
The people that own multiple buildings generally rent them out.
    Apartment buildings can house hundreds.
The number seems totally reasonable to me.

You're telling me that 20% of humanity is just buming around?

    parent root
    1 points KokosnussdesTodes

I think some are, but for example nomadic cultures or refugees would certainly count as "not living in a building". Also people that travel for work without having a house of their own could potentially fit into that category.

considering that the bar for what a german could call a building from quality perspective is quite high… yeah, I mean, seems like an accurate map: our overpriced sheds hardly quarantine

    parent
    5 points Majakowski

Then again anything that has a roof, walls, rests and is connected to the ground and which can be entered is a building permit requiring building by definition.

It's with the accuracy of 3*3 meters.

Much less detail than google earth, but it might be useful for sensitive information not shown there

What or where is Russia or Australia

    parent
    1 points Khantoro

Moscow is very visible, single red dot in that area

    parent root
    1 points Lordofharm

Fairly sure most of Russia are dirty, rocks tree and snow, and some more dirty and rocks. Remember, it's nearly twice as big as the US, with half the population, and most of them live in the smaller western part.

Idk why the article uses such a strange visualization. On their github the map is bette,r but it still doesn't include NZ, I presume because it would make the image too large. The data is still there though, you can look online using this app https://tubvsig-so2sat-vm1.srv.mwn.de/

Here's a link to the original figure from their github https://github.com/zhu-xlab/GlobalBuildingAtlas/blob/main/figures/overview.png

Is that what you took from this? That they rounded to an even number? Alright.
