So I went back to the hospital a few days ago and they removed the staples and said I had to pack in the holes I got (yes it got bigger) but we know for sure it is healing now and I got another follow up appointment on Tuesday and we may ask for a wound vac to help heal it faster. And yes I smelled it and it smells like iron and shined a light in it.

I think they meant “gauze”. The wound is packed with gauze to keep it dry and clean. When the gauze need to be removed, it’s painful. Their mom has some experience with wound care and is performing the dressing changes.

I replied to the original comment with a longer answer, but packing it with gauze (think sturdy medical Kleenex) makes sure the cavity doesn't fill from the outside-in and increase the risk of creating a subcutaneous abscess.

It’s unfortunate that it’s painful for you :( I hadn’t really thought about it being painful because at my job (podiatry clinic) the holes I packed were ulcers on diabetic feet with neuropathy, hence my patients didn’t feel anything lol

Healthcare professional Peter here: So the thing with deeper wounds is you really really don't want to have the surface layer of the skin close up before the inside is healed. Otherwise you're just enclosing bacteria in a nice warm, wet and protected pocket and it might turn into an abscess.

What the doctor meant by "it's healing well" is most likely because there are no obvious infection signs (leaking, diffused redness, foul smelling, etc.) and the inside of the wound is mostly pretty granulation tissue (new quality soft tissue ! Nice!).

It will heal from the bottom up and will take quite a while for the holes to fully "fill-in" and close but that's the way it should be!

Been there buddy. Had my stomach cut open twice just like that. Also had to pack a deep hole to let it heal. Weirdest thing ever, pulling out the old gauze and packing new stuff in. I eventually got so use to it I would pack it in with the tip of the little scissors. Anyways, you’ll be okay my dude! This will all heal up well. Looks crazy now, but your body can do amazing things. Just keep packing those wounds and have a positive attitude. You’re a warrior. Never forget it!

I had the exact same operation and staples. Mine got infected and had to have drain bags over it. Puss and stomach fluid dripping out for a couple weeks. Always wanted a cool scar but mine looks like shit. Like someone burst a rugby ball and badly stitched it back together
