Richard Kane Ferguson is goated. This card looks sick.

Super nice guy, too. Got a TON of cards signed by him at Magic Con, and he was happy to keep talking during the process. I had been in line almost 2 hours with plenty of people behind me, so I hate that I had to leave move so quickly.

I can agree that this is great art, but for me it really is not suited for a magic card. I can barely make out what I'm seeing, and it will be even harder ona. Small card

literally an OG artist with some of the most iconic arts in the history of the game. that's the hill your'e climbing up.

    Not bad ones

    Thanks for your (bad) opinion

Saying this is bad magic art is like saying alliances and ice age never should have happened

    1 points lolyana

I prefer by a lot the alternative art, now what ? Guess what, people have different tastes, downplaying them is childish.

You can be wrong. It’s fine.

    [[Necrite|drk]]

I get your point, but it's not unprecedented and personally I prefer art not be chained to being toned down into overt congruity.

Edit: I meant Necrite from The Dark but any Drew Tucker art kinda gives the vibes I'm talking about.

We're never getting a Bant Legendary Merfolk, are we? And before someone mentions it, I do know of [[Tuvasa the Sunlit]], but she doesn't care about other merfolk.

    Now we get azorius merfolk?

    parent
    43 points 1alian

    That’s Lorwyn for you

    parent root
    10 points Cuttoir

i think merfolk were only blue (please correct me if i'm wrong) until Lorwyn when they were put in azorius colours. Simic merfolk came later, and are an abomination.

    parent root
    10 points lolyana

Merfolk are also simic in dominaria and ravnica. And Simic fits them the best imo, so i totally disagree.

    parent root
    7 points Cuttoir

Still a newer phenomenon, and you are allowed to think that of course, but as my first deck back in 2008 was azorius merfolk, simic merfolk feel incredibly wrong to me. They just don't feel like merfolk to me at all!

edit: apocalypse had a single izzet and a simic merfolk

    parent root
    5 points DeusIzanagi

I think it just depends what your first experience was. If you played back in original Lorwyn, Merfolk are obviously Azorius, but if your first Merfolk were from Ixalan, they're obviously Simic lol

    parent root
    -42 points d-fakkr

Merfolk were always blue, simic since ixalan. Azorius never but with this it could be possible; azorius spells for support while keeping merfolk blue. Someone here said bant, so that's possible.

    parent root
    46 points LuxVenos

    Azorius never

[[Sygg, River Guide]] printed in 2007.

The OG Lowryn had Merfolk as UW.

The sibling block Shadowmoor had those same Merfolk become UB.

    [[Sygg, River Cutthroat]]

Considering the original Ixalan came out about a decade after this, Simic Merfolk is a far newer concept than Azorius.

Are we forgetting the OG Azorius Merfolk [[Galina’s Knight]] ?

I've only been playing for 22 years, so I wasn't aware of that one lol

On top of what the other guy said, we've had Simic Merfolk since literally Simic, which is older than Ixalan by a long ways.

    parent root
    2 points Cuttoir

I don't think that's true, maybe in lore, but in cards the first simic merfolk was the selkie card in eventide. After that, the next merfolk in simic were in 2016. fwiw, i'm using scryfall to check this, so may be using it wrong and making mistakes.

edit: apocalypse had a single izzet and a simic merfolk

This set is going to be very focused on having a single creature type. Draft is going to be very tough.

    parent
    4 points ClutchUpChrissy

It’s really not as typal focused as you’d think in a return to Lorwyn. (And the whole set has been revealed now.)

    parent root
  • -1 points Miagggo

Cool stuff for merfolks. I kinda wish we could get the old green merfolk with Explore from Ixalan

    parent
    2 points dirENgreyscale

    Why can’t we?

    parent root
    1 points SimicAscendancy

Thing is merfoks from ixalan are from another plane with different lore. Lorwyn Merfolk are different and are primarily Azorius (with some being Dimir on the original block)
