Hello, thank you for your post to /r/MadeMeSmile. Your post has been removed because we don't allow reposts. Please consider another community that may be more appropriate. Thank you!
It was posted by a girl on twitter who described what happened to her, and gave clues about who it was, but did not name KM publicly. The clues, however, only fit KM and it was shortly afterwards that he retired. It was also discussed on the bigger figure skating form but since nothing was confirmed they deleted any comment that named the skater she was referring to.
Ultimately nothing else public came out about it, but I’ve been side eyeing him ever since.
In Japan, it's tradition/respect to turn and face the flag while the anthem is playing, but the flag was behind Yuzuru Hanyu, and it was still folded. Noticing this, Keegan Messing, the Canadian skater, took it upon himself to 'raise'/unfold the flag himself, so that Hanyu could follow tradition and face the flag after it was
over, Hanyu bowed a lot to Messing for helping him out, as bowing is the form of showing respect in a few countries (the deeper the bow, the more respect it's meant to held). These two showed us that respect and kindness can still exist in this world.
It should be noted that Keegan Messing is a great-great-grandson of Manzo Nagano, the first Japanese person to officially immigrate to Canada. So it’s kind of full circle in honoring his own ancestors.
Do all countries not face the flag? Americans are also supposed to face the flag. At sporting events they'll announce over the loud speaker "please remove your hats and turn to (where in the stadium the flag is located) for the singing of our national anthem" and everyone stands and turns in the direction
Yes. But the flag is usually not spread out, unless it’s outside and the wind is making it wave. So I don’t understand why the Japanese skater didn’t face it even though it wasn’t spread out.
It's funny, my mom asks me why I do these little bows to people in thanks. I had two exchange student friends, one from Korea and one from Thailand. I guess I must have picked it up from them. It's such an easy way to say "thanks" without invading someone's space.
My best friend and once roommate picked that up from me too along with slippers in the house, only pjs in bed, and eating snacks with chopsticks . I get a kick every time we make pop corn at her place and I'm eating with fingers and she has chopsticks and then she looks at me and goes "oh. I have a you pair!". And then runs to get the extra pair she keeps just for me.
I worked at a Japanese company in the early 2000's. There were many Japanese expatriates that worked there, and some of them were older. Apparently, the older someone is, the more respect they get by default. I once saw two old Japanese guys in the lobby greeting each other. They were trying to out-bow each other. It lasted entirely too long.
It may be that more importance is placed on it in Japan. I'd have to watch old medal ceremonies but I also suspect that most other countries kind of "forgive" that societal norm in cases like this. I don't remember any other medalists turning around on their dais to face their flag, off the top of my head. I could be wrong though.
Yeah I know about hockey doing it, but don't watch many other team sports (though tbh I kinda figured)
I think the difference is that those do the anthem at the start of the game, where there's less "incentive" for pictures. And the Olympics generally are gunna be more "photo op" worthy than most sports games. Excepting the Stanley cup, super bowl, world series, world cup etc.
But again I could totally be wrong. I'm just speculating here =p
Sorry I was just talking normal season games. I should have been more specific. My mistake.
My point though was that Olympics may be different than typical, so I appreciate you pointing out that the team sports still do face the flag for the medal stuff.
It's understanding too! Sometimes people have a rough day, and take it out in the wrong way, sometimes on you. Be kind anyway. Be respectful anyway. Someday that may be you having a rough day.
Exactly! I work as a medical interpreter. Had this call where a lady yelled at me to shut up several times while I was interpreting what the doctor was saying. I felt really bad and annoyed, but I kept doing my job and kept my voice gentle. There was a moment of silence while the doctor was checking something, and then suddenly the lady apologized to me, and told me that she was just in a lot of pain. At that moment all annoyance and frustration on my part just melted away because I understood. I’ve been there too.
Right? I used to think that happiness and joy were infinite resources. To give kindness is to feel it in return and it just goes on and on, feeding itself like some perpetual energy that can’t be stopped.
I just never understood why it didn’t happen like that. Then I realized that some souls are just allergic to it, and only function with cruelty, ignorance, and hate.
That's a good way to put it! But yeah, I never understood either. Really sucks to see. And it seems to just keep getting worse year after year im 28 now and it is insane how bad things have gotten in the past decade
yes and no, sadly American politics and ideals have been seeping into some canadian minds. Im in Alberta and the current provincial politician in charge seems to idealize the current POTUS…its getting scary over here…people proudly putting natzi stickers and flags on their property…I think its a small amount of ppl..but thats still too many.
Just remember, less than 4k votes in Calgary were the deciding factor which gave the UCP their win. I don't see them expanding their mandate in the 27 election.
The rural voting block though?... they're a lost cause.
I always put that hard right turn down to the 10yrs reign of the Howard government, leading us too close to the American during the Iraq war and subsequently breeding decades of self-interest and moraless liberal leaders.
That guy did the right thing, thats all it takes, just do the right thing, don’t second guess it, or think you’re goin to be uncool (fact: you already are not “cool”)
That’s all this world needs…… just do the right thing
Yeah, but it's a japanese way to honor the flag that to bow to the flag while their anthem is played. So removing the anthem from the video is kinda weird

I watched this live (on streaming lol) and felt very touched by this, I was confused about Japan's flag not being shown and then Keegan just did that, Yuzuru was very happy about it and fs fans too, we were going crazy on twitter, that simple gesture made us love Keegan even more, such a nice man.

The look on the Japanese skater's face when he notices, he looked so touched
This world would be much nicer if more people as thoughtful as Keegan Messing.
The world would be a better place if people were as thoughtful as Keegan was in this moment. Unfortunately he currently has SA allegations against him
He does? Do you have a source so I can read up on it?

That also explains how a Canadian knew that a Japanese person would want to face their flag for the anthem.
I was raised (in Canada, with no connection to Japan) to face the flag for the anthem, and in my experience so were most people.
I was taught to talk shit about my government when I hear the anthem...
I was taught to respect the anthem but I always talk shit about my government even when the anthem is playing
Dutch?
close, Belgian
Lmfao even worse
Sorry makker
dankje 😔

As a Canadian, our education system teaches these traditions in other countries as well.
Whoa. That’s genuinely awesome.
Making me tear up now
Thank you for the explanation. It added much needed context.
You’re welcome, thanks for reading ☺️
Thank you to his teachers for teaching him how to read
deep bow
deeper bow
i tried to continue but i got into a situation, please call a doctor or a scientist
The original clip is much longer and shows a lot more subtle context, i really recommend you look it up :)
It does.
Keegan Messing is a very thoughtful young man.
There was supposed to be a small flag in front of the dais, but it had not been placed.
I've never seen the word dais written it before.
Rock me, I'm a dais
Hi, I love you

i lived in Hong Kong for a few years in my early teens, so i’ve picked up the little bows too haha
I do the little bows too xD
I've had several friends from over seas and they would do it and it just kinda stuck with me from them xD
I’ve immersed myself in Kdramas now I do little bows too ☺️

Wait til you see them bowing on the phone
Respect and kindness is always there, it just sucks that there are those that choose to ignore it.
How long has Japan used "Mary on a cross" for their anthem?
Great taste by the Japanese
Def not a shit bow
Was hoping someone else would say this.
almost 90 degrees
is this not the norm in literally every country on the planet? normal in US and Canada, surely this happens everywhere.
It may be that more importance is placed on it in Japan. I'd have to watch old medal ceremonies but I also suspect that most other countries kind of "forgive" that societal norm in cases like this. I don't remember any other medalists turning around on their dais to face their flag, off the top of my head. I could be wrong though.
i don't watch a ton of podium sports but this is extremely common place in hockey and other team sports.
Yeah I know about hockey doing it, but don't watch many other team sports (though tbh I kinda figured)

But again I could totally be wrong. I'm just speculating here =p
i was specifically referring to hockey in the medal ceremonies, where they all line up on the blue line facing their flag.
Sorry I was just talking normal season games. I should have been more specific. My mistake.
My point though was that Olympics may be different than typical, so I appreciate you pointing out that the team sports still do face the flag for the medal stuff.
Not the tradition in Australia.
very odd, wonder why that is.
With respect, it's quite unusual in a global sense for citizens to do this, the overwhelming majority do not have this custom.
99% of the anthems I’ve seen have been at hockey games and I don’t think I’ve ever faced the flag. Usually pointed at the singer.
the players all stand towards the flag, depending on which end of the ice it is.
every time. i did it for years. that's why you see goalies facing their own net during anthems. happens every Junior, NHL and Olympic game.
Lovely!
But a shitty Tiktok version of a Ghost song is playing, not the Japanese national anthem
Crazy that Ghost did the anthem for Japan
Respect and kindness is so sexy
And, interestingly enough, super easy.
Equally interesting - it's free to provide!
And more often than not, it comes back! Being kind to people makes me happy, and I notice that when you’re kind, people tend to be kind to you too.
It's understanding too! Sometimes people have a rough day, and take it out in the wrong way, sometimes on you. Be kind anyway. Be respectful anyway. Someday that may be you having a rough day.

Only for non-assholes. For assholes, its literally debilitating.
Yes yes it is!! That's what always gets me with hateful people. Like, it is SO much easier in literally every way if you are just kind
Right? I used to think that happiness and joy were infinite resources. To give kindness is to feel it in return and it just goes on and on, feeding itself like some perpetual energy that can’t be stopped.

I mean, it does take work. For sure. Its not effortless. But so much less energy is required to give life rather than take it in these situations
It is a hell of a lot easier than being mean
Barely an inconvenience
Right? You get laid a shit ton for being an actually good person and meeting others like humans who deserve respect and kindness above all.
These people are super gay tho
Whatre you on about? The gays get laid more than the straights.
I respect the shit out of u
They should kiss
It really is not, more people have a fetish for rough sex and humiliation than for praise.
They're competitors, not enemies. Except when they are enemies, because that happens, too.
And then they kiss right
Or hire someone to take out the other's knee.
I really wanted them to kiss
MARYANNA, MARYANNA!
CROSS! 🙅♂️
this was a moment I felt proud to be canadian.
You have so much to be proud of as a Canadian. Kinda jealous.
We Australian could have been the southern hemisphere Canadian back in the 80s…we took a hard right and now the New Zealander have over took us.
yes and no, sadly American politics and ideals have been seeping into some canadian minds. Im in Alberta and the current provincial politician in charge seems to idealize the current POTUS…its getting scary over here…people proudly putting natzi stickers and flags on their property…I think its a small amount of ppl..but thats still too many.
Alberta kinda scares us over here on the coast.
Alberta scares many of us in Alberta.
Just remember, less than 4k votes in Calgary were the deciding factor which gave the UCP their win. I don't see them expanding their mandate in the 27 election.
The rural voting block though?... they're a lost cause.
As an American I feel the need to apologize.
You must be from Minnesota haha... they're about as Canadian as an American can get 😂.
But we know not every American is in support of what is going on down there.
What gets me is how both AU and NZ had f'ing pro-Trump marches. Madness! At least the nutcases in Canada could walk to the land of grift and phoney!
That’s OK, you get to be southern hemisphere American!
…wait…
I always put that hard right turn down to the 10yrs reign of the Howard government, leading us too close to the American during the Iraq war and subsequently breeding decades of self-interest and moraless liberal leaders.
Hang on sorry, I’m not so familiar with Aussie politics as it’s the one Anglophone country I’ve not lived in.
Are you saying Howard made liberals chickenshit and that’s why you’ve taken a hard right lately? Wasn’t Howard conservative?

What if I grab it with my teeth?
Canada really has come a long way for being the reason we have the Geneva Convention. ❤️
I know Keegan personally. He is such a nice guy, and this is 100% in character.
Can second. I also know Keegan. And he and his family give some of the best hugs.
Damn Canadians always being nice and making the rest of us look mean and oblivious.
Sorry
always being kind and nice or generally?
Class act.... Canadian people are always kind and well mannered....Loved visiting Canada
The world needs more Canada.
That guy did the right thing, thats all it takes, just do the right thing, don’t second guess it, or think you’re goin to be uncool (fact: you already are not “cool”) That’s all this world needs…… just do the right thing
Can you image if the Japanese flag had fallen over when he raised it up? Lol. These are the things that go through my head
All my homies like clips where the original audio isn’t replaced with some random song
Yeah, I mean.. I absolutely love Ghost. But here?
Furthermore when the original video music is needed to understand that he want to bow to his anthem.
If i remember, he turned to bow to the flag, it was down and turned back around. Canadian saw this and held the flag up.
Correct me if im wrong.
Yeah, but it's a japanese way to honor the flag that to bow to the flag while their anthem is played. So removing the anthem from the video is kinda weird
Ah didnt know that. Then it is weird to remove the original audio
Way to represent!
lol @ the soundtrack.
"Seven Inches of Satanic Panic on Ice"
Canadian class
Two awesome countries
Would have been nice to hear the anthem while the anthem is playing
Fuck. Man. 🥹humans doing good shit for zero self gain will never not hit me like a ton of bricks

Canadians are cool. I hope they will built relations to EU.
Romanian boxers like Bute, Doroftei built their careers over there. It wasnt possible in romania at that time.
Grace costs you nothing.
What a Timeless moment captured. WOW
I love it
Sportsmanship personified
can anyone identify the song?
Ghost - Mary on a cross
Honestly, it's crazy how a lil bit of respect goes a long way, imo.
Wow this is so special 🥹 thank you for the reminder that the world isn’t ONLY full of 💩heads
Edit to add “only” because the world definitely is still full of 💩heads

Is that really the national anthem, "Mary Anna"?
That's so nice. The way he made the guys face lit up :)
The guy giving the flower is he the breaking bad guy?
Can’t stop watching was so nice of him to do that for him must’ve been a good feeling
Nice top
This is what makes sports so nice to watch, not the competition itself but the respect beyond it
Glad I watched this muted

The least the Canadian competitor could have done in return would have been to give him first place.
Canada shows we're all humans competing for they're country & Great job Japan & Canada
Best post of the day, thank you OP!

Now if Canadians could only carry this same sentiment when dealing with idk... FN rights like the Cowichan case in BC...
Hmm I dunno I don’t think raising the Canadian flag for them will help matters tbh
They’re flirting.
Damn, no one tell his wife
And? Was this supposed to be an insult? A joke? If so, damn you aren't funny
Wow. Are you saying two men can’t flirt??
Of course they can. Are you using them flirting as a degrading joke?
I’m trans… no. I wasn’t being homophobic.
Well I am so damn sorry for being defensive. You weren't being mean. I again apologize. I hope you have an amazing Sunday and it's free of adulting.
Thank you! I’m sorry you had to feel defensive. Sounds like it’s been stressful lately. Hope you have a softer week, and new year. 💕
Twinks on ice
edit idk why yall upset, twink isn't a degrading word.
More successful and loved than you'll be. Esp when you love your first cousin
