The military is so fucking predatory. Trying to get 16/17 year olds to sign up for 6 year contracts the day they turn 18. Which aren't actually 6 years because it also includes Individual Ready Reserve (IRR) after your "contract" is up.
Recruiters straight up lie to kids, and the military will give you a bigger signing bonus if you sign up when you're 17 (with parents permission) hoping that you don't wise up to the scam and go to college or trade school instead.
EDIT: IIRC they also use fucking pyramid scheme tactics. Like if your friend enlists, then convinces you to enlist, your friend can get a referral bonus.
I talked to recruiters (Army & Air Force), but I straight up told them:
This is a backup plan if I don't get accepted into college. I'm not enlisting if I get accepted. And my grades and SATs are good, so it's unlikely I get rejected, but I'm just keeping options open in case.
Air Force guy was mostly chill about it. He mainly reworked his approach to talk about how I could do ROTC or the ANG and get my college fully or partially covered. Or I could do a 2 year enlistment and get the GI bill to cover some. I get it, recruiting is his job. But I feel like he was an OK guy.
The Army dude was a nutsack. He'd call me and be like "Hey, just want to let you know today is the last possible day you can get $X,000 in your enlistment bonus! Don't want to see it get flushed down the drain if you don't get into college, your parents would love the assistance and stability you can give them!"
Like fuck you buddy. You knew I was from a poor family and you're trying to wedge that against me.
Yeah, i spent 6 years in and was able to afford a down payment on a house, stayed out of debt, am currently being paid to go to university, and was able to move overseas to live with my now wife. If i hadn't, I'd likely be having the same back pain from being a roofer/builder without a disability check and struggling to pay rent in NH
The military has it's issues, but it brought my dad and uncle, two boys raised by a single mom and full time nurse on a meager salary into careers as a top lawyer and high earning police officer. The military gave them the opportunity to advance further than they could have. People seem to forget that.
This is bullcrap. I did 20 years on SSNs and my shipmates were from all walks of life. My best friends were; a rich kid, a guy with a Masters degree and most were middle class. Very few came from families that were poor.
Most were young guys who wanted something new, something that would hone them, that would challenge, patriotism, travel, pay off college.
But, the SSN fleet is the top 10% of all US military.
so we're drawing the line at 'getting played by marky mark'
Deal breaker. Keanu or bust

As a vet, you aren’t wrong. Not to mention the false patriotism instilled in Americas youth by the post ww2 boomers is criminal.

And then the stories my brother told of the marine recruiters, shit man they’re ruthless.
AF is chill in general, but they lie to as they did to me, in recruiting and in service.
Patriotism is a great thing. The problem is it has been exploited as a means to make rich people even wealthier.

Patriotism is just a form of communism. Erasing the individual and replacing it with collectivism
It’s voluntary unlike communism. It’s also a fundamental part of what makes us human: defending one’s tribe.
Is it though? It's indoctrinated into kids to stand and receipt a pledge of allegiance in schools.
Collectivism, aka communism. Libertarians support individuals. Patriotism and Nationalism are anti individual.
Yep, first hand experience here lol
Ya know, change military to porn industry and now everyone has a problem… lol
Contrary to most of you, the military was great for me and my family. Our life is so much better than what it would have been had I not served.
But the skit is funny!

That's some motivating cadence up till that last line, which was just a bridge too far.
The military has been a blessing to my life. It’s not all rainbows and sunshine, but I never thought it was. I wouldn’t change serving for anything.

Same concept
War is evil.
The true Christmas spirit is peace.
I think George Washington would disagree.
Wrong color socks.
My father is a firefighter, the sheer amount of wrong in every Hollywood depiction of firefighting is staggering.
But they separate brother and sister units/flights. This is bullshit! /s
