Canadian here too. Was looking at a big RV to tour the south in the winter. When it looked like Trump was going to win, put a hold on that. Now I will never need one because I will never again go to the USA or buy their alcohol. produce or any thing that I can avoid.
32% of American voted for this turd and it is not something that can be forgiven. In 3 yrs maybe a Democrat will be in but anyone with an IQ over 70 will know that this can again happen at the drop of a hat.
Now we have the US military committing war crimes, people about to swear their oath of allegiance being kidnapped.
Lawlessness through out the US federal government and any Republican run states. Frankly who needs the US. We have the skills and resources to make anything here.
No one with a functioning brain will ever trust the USA again.
Yep. It went from a one time mistake with trump 1 to something that can happen every 4 years with trump 2. Until Congress takes some power away from the president it's basically gonna suck.
Basically trump should never even have won a primary. But barring that he shouldn't have won a national election and barring that should have been impeached and likely jailed. Barring all that he shouldn't have won another election
Not even possible without 50 willing senators which may not even happen because the whole country is stacked to give Republicans more representation. That was bidens problem. His margin was so thin it only took 1 person defecting to put those thoughts away.
Also wont happen till benefits are cut or collapse of dollar somehow when our debt gets too big. Too many people fat from the benefits of social security and pensions and the like.
Look at 2020. Barely got Dems to 50 senators.
Basically we will slowly dwindle as long as Republicans aren't in charge and quickly dwindle when they are
I don't know why people are down voting you. You are 100% correct. The system is so Gerrymandered that is completely impossible for Dems to win in some states. Republicans taking the whole state with 40% of the vote.
I do disagree, at some point people will see there is no choice but to either live in a totalitarian state las depicted in The Handmaid's Tale or fight for better.
It's all of it. Senators are geared toward small states. In reality Dems should always have the house but because the 1920 cap on the house (we should have 1000 house seats now) it's again shifted to help Republicans
Complaining about ‘checks and balances’ and ‘too much presidential power’ is only for repugnithugs and only when NOT a fucknugget repugnithug in office. Otherwise, it is fine! Nothing to see here.
Obama executing a known terrorist via drone. Over reach and un American. Trump executing multiple unknown fisherman boats and survivors. Great and totally justified.
> No oneAmerican with a functioning brain will ever trust the USA again.
Also this. I've been an American citizen since 1982, grew up here since age 4. And since 2015 it is as if I'm seeing my country (for I have no other citizenship) anew, and it's a horror movie.
All our friends and partners who are shunning us, who will turn away from us, are right to do so. If only it were so easy for us Americans, ah well.
No one in the International Community will ever trust the USA again. American's might not trust as well but it's not limited to Americans.
I don't think Americans really understand that the fact that the U.S ruler being able to unilaterally destroy International treaties, deals and policies at the drop of a hat, without and restrictions or controls whatseover, has dramatically changed how everyone in the International Community now sees the U.S and it's systems.
There can be no continuity, no consistency, no guarantee. There is no place for which to now build a relationship of trust. The Word of the U.S State is ruined, and it's soft-power is gone.
No one will ever trust the U.S again.
This isn't just Trump, it's systemic, and it could all just happen again.
And it's not just that, it's EVERYTHING.
Your emoluments clause. Your checks and balances. Your separation of powers. Your rule of law. Your equal justice. Your no-one is above the law. Your beacon of democracy.
Now nothing but propaganda.
America doesn't recover from this with an election or two. The U.S State is now seen as an exploitative, lawless, chaotic, belligerant, warmongering, arms-dealer with fascist tendencies.
I'm sorry, I should have been clearer. I didn't mean that other countries would trust America. Rather, that -also- Americans would not trust America.
And everything you write is true: everything. Absolutely everything. My one hope is that the EU and America's East Asian allies (Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan) will together go on without America.
Please believe that it is my fondest wish that that is what happens. Near the end of Trump I, I wrote to some friends in Europe that I thought they should know that if he won the election, that he would be a threat to Europe, to The West, and that they should be prepared to lobby their elected officials to do the utmost to prepare for America being an enemy. I was a little early, but it has all come to pass.
And just as you wrote, it won't matter if Dems retake power in 2029: MAGA will be there, and in 10-15yr it's a lead-pipe cinch that they'll be back. And we'll go thru another round of this intolerable damage to The West. That's unacceptable, and The West needs to go on without America, just as you say.
I love that you said the soft power is gone. The US was able to manipulate and get a lot done in world affairs by staying in the shadows, working with ambassadors and other countries like Canada etc. now we can’t do that. Even our massive intelligence networks have been getting upended by this political war instead of keeping it in place.
This is true. Vietnam was one big war crime. All the invasions of other countries up to 911 were war crimes too. Then 911 where it was blatant war crimes. Now Trump thinks he is going to take over Venezuela. It will be just like Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. Running home, throwing their weapons over their shoulders.
Same if they invade Canada. They could walk in here no problem but the insurgency would destroy them. Plus, we look like them, and sound just like them. I need about 2 days in any place in America and I sound like a native, lots like me. It would be liking inviting a 5th column into your country.
I will never understand the desire to make an enemy out of Canada. Canada. The country that has had our back forever. Best neighbors you could hope for. And for what? Money? Makes me sick. Trump is a sickness that has wrecked my country.
Trump is a little tiny 6 inch tall man in a full grown man's body. He talks about merit but the only merit he ever displayed was that his sperm was the fastest swimmer. Defective in all other attributes.
He is so stupid that everyone laughed at him. Now he is making you all pay. He is a complete narcist who needs constant attention. One of the most pathetic excuses for a human I have ever seen.
He is making us pay because Justin Trudeau inadvisably make fun of him. Of course no one would have thought that Americans were stupid enough vote him in a second time.
Now the only good thing about Trump 2.0 is that he is sticking it so hard to the people who voted him in, that they may not walk again and if they do they will walk funny. They are losing their businesses, homes and farms and still they want Trump to ram it up there a little more.
Sadly we have our Maple MAGA here. Idiots that love Trump. To a person they heat freedom while they call for more FREEDUMB
British - having seen a report on how your armed forces are producing some of the best snipers in the world the US would really be dumb to try and invade you.
Scary to read about the World War 1 Canadian officer who threw a grenade into a German trench after they had thrown cigarettes to those Germans around Christmas time one year.
America's entire history is war crimes. We just whitewash it with heartwarming stories and illustrations of 'pilgrims' giving turkeys to 'savage' native Americans.... right before we massacred them.
Genocide, colonialism and exploitation is on-brand for YT people, especially using 'god' as justification.
This is sad, and I don't blame you. I have truly enjoyed meeting our Canadian neighbors over the years. I would be avoiding the US if I were you too, but it's unfortunate these hateful assholes are making things worse for so many people.
Hey now, that's a bit harsh. As an American... I got nothing, you're spot on. I went to Europe over the summer and did my best to not let it be known that I was American because it's pretty embarrassing right now. For what it's worth I feel deep regret that so many of my countrymen are straight up racist assholes with the critical thinking skills of a drunk 3 year old, and I apologize for the way we are spectacularly shitting ourselves on the world stage.
I feel like we're going to have to cure cancer and make it free to the world to come back from where we're at now. That may take an administration or 12.
Not until your systems are changed and strengthened with stringent law, there are actual legal controls on your ruler, your ruling class, and the U.S State, and you're no longer the exploitative, chaotic, belligerant, warmongering arms-dealers you are.
No one in or entering poltiics under the current system will ever be able to change the current situation we are seeing without drastic changes to multiple and myriad political, economic, social and industrial systems. The number of administrations doesn't matter.
This is bigger than you think. Your systems allowed Trump to do all this, and there have been no controls, no consequences, no restrictions, and no oversight from any entity in your country, whatsoever. He burnt International treaties, deals and polcies at the drop of a hat. It has very much been noted.
Im honestly shocked at how fast your countries spinning out, like this is 50+ years of unrivalled soft power destroyed in less than a year, its impressively bad
As one of the US citizens who voted against all of this, all I can say is good. The fact that so many could just 'sit this one out' or 'both sides' this is just...ghastly. I've never trusted 80% of Americans and I suspect that this number may be low.
Were it up to just me, I would seek a civilized country who would be willing to allow me to relocate to a sane society. In the mean time, I too buy Canadian products first and will not spend my vacation money here. We tried warning them, but that doesn't work. They need to feel this personally before it's real, apparently. *sigh*
Oh, I'd trust them again.
Under the condition that everybody who acted against the fundamentals of humanity, broke contracts with allies, broke international law, lied in office, et cetera et cetera is tried and sentenced accordingly.
Includes everybody in charge of the Vietnam war, conspired with the United Fruit Company to state coups in south american states, invaded the Iraq on false pretense, is affiliated with the ICE... and more and more.
Lots of the sentencing is to happen at the correct court, which is located in The Hague.
And they would need to change the systems that allowed it.
And create actual LAW to prevent it, instead of relying on oaths and ethics and the idea that a system of governance can be built on the idea that poltiicians would hold to their word.
Even if a democrat comes into power, how can you undo what is happening with ICE and the border people. No way will they clear out those departments and start from scratch, the people currently there will still be working there or in other law enforcement of some kind. How can you trust them? Yeah you might not get renditioned but they can still make you miserable and will.
And how much time will it take to undo the legislation and put some actual guard rails in?
Without a hell of a come to jesus moment, I really don't know what can be done in 4 years, especially if they don't win a majority in the legislative part.
And that's if US is lucky and doesn't have their elections cancelled.
32% for and even more who didn't care. Even as one who voted and worked against the current situation, I'm glad your doing what you're doing. You're 💯% spot on.
I appreciate you Canadians also not severely impacting states like mine, and continue to trade with us. I’m a Californian and we still have and buy and support our Canadian neighbors. We didn’t vote for this. 😭
I'm an American who lives in the US and even I'm not vacationing in the US. We are choosing to spend our vacation dollars in Europe and Canada(I live on the border) during this second trump term.
Nothing to really fear when traveling (well I am scared to fly), but it is scary at first.
But the rewards are just great.
If you are scared, start with easy countries. Australia (where I am), Canada, New Zealand, The UK, and such. English speaking, similar systems.
After that you can go on to Spain and the rest of Eastern Europe, Mexico is great. I place these harder as I only speak English.
Look, I suffer from chronic anxiety, so I understand. I would advise grabbing some beta blockers from your doctor (they block adrenaline, so it stops the whole feeling of butterflies in your stomach so that the anxiety is less). And if you can trust yourself, some diazepam (Valium).
I have travelled to many countries, but wish I had travelled to more. I am a food and culture traveller, slap in a bit of architecture and history. Gawd I love food though.
People travel for different reasons, find your reason and get out there. You will not regret it.
This seems like a reasonable fear to me—ICE/CPB is full of very aggressive racists, & from what I’ve read you do not wanna be beaten & shoved into one of their concentration camps even for a few hours. They beat, rape, & torture ppl in those concentration camps. Cells are overcrowded & cold, yr not provided blankets nor beds. I personally wouldn’t take that chance as a white trans person “we think this passport is fake” is the last thing I wanna hear, & they say that to a lot of innocent Americans they’re arresting & locking up.
It's really fine even in these times when we are pissing off our allies. I live right on the US/Canada border. People here go to Ontario for lunch if they want.
Even in Europe, where we don't speak the local language, it's fine. Most everyone working in the service industry in touristy areas speaks English, but we always learn to say Please, Thank You, Hello, GoodBye in the language.
It's wonderful to experience the world beyond where you live. I've got teenagers and its nice that we've been able to show them cities like New York, Toronto, Montreal, Paris, Berlin so they can compare and contrast the different cultures and infrastructure like public transit.
Try a city like Toronto or Vancouver where English is spoken, the people are nice and there is SO much to do.
I live in DC, so my boyfriend and I get to NYC at least once a year. I've been to Toronto, Montréal, and Vancouver and loved all cities. I really do want to go back. Most people spoke English in Montréal. We were in Ottawa a few days earlier and went to a restaurant in Gatineau, where they spoke English (although the traffic signs were in French only, while in Ontario, they're in French and English).
I had very rusty French, but with that and the help of Google Translate could read signs.
Maybe the next time I go, if the weather allows, I'll wear the "Forwards. Defenders. Tenders." shirt I got from Double Hockey Stix.
I have no ill will to you guys. I hope your populace continues to support Europe and doesn’t have goldfish memory on this. The only chance we Americans have of getting rid of this MAGA cancer is by hitting them in their pocketbook.
Just know its not half of America like voting insinuates. Half dont vote. Its a thin slice of brainwashed morons and they are in every country these days thanks to the internet and lack of good education.
The support for us Canadians online I’ve seen from Aussies has blown me away, you guys are just awesome! The more Aussies I talk to the more I realize how similar we are in values and humour, despite our physical distance and opposite climates 🇨🇦🤝🇦🇺
We get snowbirds where I am. I’ve heard of at least a dozen local restaurants that have been here for decades closing in the last two weeks due to no Canadians coming down.
As a former Floridian, I recommend Scotland as well. The state is turning into a polluted hellscape thanks to bad policies and Ron DeSantis' wholesale attempts to sell the state's (now heavily polluted) parks for pickleball courts.
Yeah I used to live in BC and no one I know goes to the US for *anything* now. Blaine and Bellingham have yo be fucking cooked. They took the dollar at par most places and flew Canadian flags outside of stores. My friend who usually comes to visit has opted out until further notice, and I 100% understand.
Canadian as well! There's an article on CBC saying that Canadian bookings to Mexico are up 11%. Snowbirds are deliberately avoiding the USA -- particularly Florida and Texas.
If you like your resorts to smell like swamp water, I can see this. California is actually resort like and doesn't have ridiculous Republican "governance." That said, the five years of social media history is going to be a problem.
I assume the same reason family members try to get the reasonable person to roll over and take abuse rather than try to reason with the horrible person in the family. There's a much better chance the sane person can be reasoned with/guilted/shamed. You can't do any of that with Trump.
For the same reason people try to come down on victims over abusers. The abusers are known to use force and thats scary so they'd rather try an easier target.
If they think it is bad now, just wait for year four of the Mango Molester. I don't think the real drop-off has even started. All the prepaid travel is over.
It doesn’t matter to Canadians. Trump showed us that America is not a Canadian ally and that at least half your country sees us as a vassal state that should be grateful they want us at all.
I am a Canadian. I agree with you. I will not go back. I have fairly severe asthma that is cold triggered. I would love to be south. Not going to happen.
BTW, lots of quisling Canadians too. They will always go south.
Vance might be pres if Trump dies in office but he could never win a general election. He wears makeup, is too nakedly out there for himself but most importantly he in the eyes of Republicans, he is a traitor to his race. He has married an Indian and has children with her. He would be more excepted if he was gay.
Full disclosure I don't care if what your race or nationality is. I care about the person and what they are.
Lots of Indians as we can see with Vivek Ramadamadingdong and KashI am an incompetent IdiotPatel think they are white. They are not, they are Indians and that does not make them less, unless they are being looked at by Republicans. Republicans consider them useful idiots and nothing more or less.
Ask Ann Coulter what she told Vivek right to his face at a dinner party. I will tell you. You know you have some good ideas Vivek, but I could never vote for you because you are not white. Republicans are just too out and out racist to vote for an Indian. Not all of them but enough that they can not make it. Vance is worse because in their eyes he has soiled himself
One thing I’ve learned about Donald Trump over the years is how transparent he actually is on his views. Trump really pissed off Canadians and worst part is that when you explain this to Americans they don’t get it. “Oh he’s just joking, don’t take it seriously, he’s just saying stuff” No he’s fucking not just saying stuff, he 100% means it.
I unfortunately have to refute your anecdote with an anecdote. My grandfather has had a reputation for falling asleep at inappropriate moments since his 70s. He's now in his 90s.
Presidents get medical benefits the rest of us wouldn't even be able to afford even if we had access to them. Unless he suddenly drops dead there's good odds they could keep his shambling rot body alive another good decade.
Tried Mexican and Spanish beers on a whim. What have I been drinking all this time? It's so good and smooth that even my mom that can't stand beer loves it.
Edit: One of the things to note to that people boycotting American goods likely aren't going back even if relations becomes better because they've both become normalized to other products and because they just might find something they like more.
I'm in the UK and went through every item in my house and where I could, I switch brands. We have a list on the fridge of good and bad laundry brands, and clothing, make up, hygiene etc. etc.
My old man in NZ is a conservative/National voters despite National fucking his life up more than Labour (dude needs to get off FB) and he did the same thing. I genuinely thought he would be on board with Trump but he has cut everything out, amd Dad loves bourbon. Jim Beam is his jam. Not a drop of it since Trump was elected. He is actually drinking Japanese whiskey which is a big deal given his dad was in the Pacific theatre and we were never allowed any Japanese brands or to learn their language at school.
Idgaf, america deserves everything it gets. I'd boycott this trash country too if it were possible.
I know that I'm not part of the problem in the way MAGAts and their worm of a leader are, but I'm sitting over here feeling frozen, so I don't do much about this because I feel there's nothing we CAN do. So I sit immobile. That's how many of us are part of the problem 😞 I don't have any idea how else to help so I keep my people and community close. But I digress.
Canada, you do you. Just be careful; I wouldn't put it past our trash administration to make things bad/worse for y'all.
We don't know what Truth may come tonight. That's precisely why the DND is creating a civilian army. Initial target is 300,000, and is supplementary to both active and reservist armed services.
We can't do anything. This is deeper than money. This is a rotten ideology and a deep-seated spoiledness that came from years of being told we were the best in the world. Then there were so many people who simply wanted to rest on their laurels without actually putting in the same amount of hard work it takes to maintain that status.
Americans want to be considered the economic powerhouse in the world without actually producing any decent products outside of our tourism. They still want to hang on to the power and prestige that comes from being at the top of the game, but we no longer have a game. The only thing that is going to fix this is America getting knocked down, and electing Trump was a great way to hurry that process along. Hopefully, 20 to 30 years of being humbled internationally will be the kick in the pants that we need to get back to being a productive society that works together.
Financial measures like boycotts may change what people are doing on an economic level, but it doesn't change the completely unsubstantiated superiority complex that so many Americans have. That is just going to take time and years of embarrassment.
Like the other Canadians here have commented, we haven't been south over the border this year, and our frequent trips to Buffalo for shopping have been canceled. Christmas shopping is all Canadian this year.
I know a Canadian who moved back to Canada from Tampa, despite having a green card, and he said he may never come to the United States again. Frankly, I do not blame him.
In the spirit of complete fairness, Trump trying to annex Canada was one of the few things he didn't foreshadow during his 2024 campaign. But let's face it, those idiots in the border states would've still voted for him even if he'd talked about it.
I read an article the other day that DHS wants to get biometrics from all tourists trying to come to the USA for the World Cup next year.. on top of the tickets being so expensive that it would even make Ticketmaster cry.
The tourists will be the least of the issues. Most of those who are addicted enough to fly to the US and pay the ticket price to see a football game life will still do so.
The much bigger problem for US economy will be foreign specialists who say "nah, I am not handing all my private data and the data of my entire family to US-Gestapo". THAT will bring the issues because other than the very much replacable fans there is very little you can do to compensate the lack of these people. Think of the Hyundai battery plant that was massively delayed with the Korean specialists who left with no intention to return - and the fact that the next group will think twice if they will even give it a go (including the companies themselves considering whether they can even risk sending highly trained people.., who aren't expendable workers)
I don’t think they realize that this is just the beginning. It can, and probably will, get much worse.
The loss of tourism they’re talking about here is the reaction to events BEFORE the flagrant war crimes… before some exciting new requirements to cross the border… before the new “National Security Strategy” which says the USA officially considers Canada their vassal.
I suspect Canadian tourism is about to fall off a cliff….. and, after the USA withdraws from our trade agreement… well you get the idea.
If they decide to invade us, they’ll probably close the border in advance so that’ll bring the number of tourists to zero.
I feel bad for the border states whose citizens did not, as a majority, vote for this administration. Everyone else that did support it deserves zero sympathy.
My parents have a seasonal in a May-October campground less than an hour from the border and said that it was significantly emptier without as many Canadians visiting.
nah a lot of border states did vote for this. as a canadian who crossed the border a lot to pick up stuff i order, the hate you get towards canadian is there. they hide it well cause they only see your wallet, but you can tell what they really think of you as you walk around. the way they look at you when they see a canadian license plate.
I'm not Canadian, but my feeling as a British citizen is similar. We've got a very good pension starting to pay over the next few years, no family commitments and even as pensioners, we'll be in the top decile of UK household incomes. We have an identified travel budget for the next few years of around £100k.
We planned, until recently, some of that to go to the USA. There's a bunch of trips we wanted to do, such as the California mission stations.
You can all now get fucked. We're 60, and we won't be visiting the USA again. By the time you can be trusted not to kill me, imprison me or whatever the rest of the things you want to do are, I'll be past travel. Shame: I made about forty trips to the USA over my working life, and greatly enjoyed it. But no.
I have seen someone reply to a prior post suggesting that we are too poor to to go the US, and then someone replied to a 2 week old reply of mine in Ask The World suggesting that they (USA) can invade and take us whenever they want to and that we are worthless.
And you have the gall to ask me to visit for vacation?
Just got back from 4 days in Montreal area. Normally would have spent all that time and $$$ in USA during Thanksgiving but happy to really have enjoyed the time in Canada.
Be like a good corporation and pick out the good parts and leave the other parts to rot. Might as well make some money while you're twisting the knife.
Why in the everloving fuck would a Canadian even think of coming here? Most people I know wouldn't risk being randomly thrown into an ICE concentration camp.
there was a news report where a canadian lady got detained, throw in prison sent to an ice facility, was finally released but says she still wants to visit the states. some people are brain damaged.
Anyone can look at election results by county. Michigan voted for Trump. And Gratiot and St. Clair counties gave him comfortable majorities so fuck them. Why would I want to spend my money there? Whenever I visit my friend in Sarnia, we flip off the US anytime we face it.
I used to like to do a quick visit to Miami or NYC around this time of the year but now, no more.
I’ll go there for business trips when I have to but the recent news of Trump proposing the social media history for up to 5 yrs makes me really never want to go there in general.
Sad for those just trying to get by and didn’t vote for Trump who rely on tourism but happy for those who did vote for this and go around proclaiming Canada as “the 51st state” like aholes to feel these consequences.
"I don't understand why Canadians aren't visiting!"
- Signed, the residents of a deeply corrupt collapsing country ruled by a dictator who requires border guards to scrutinize 5 years of a tourist's social media history for wrongthink about Dear Leader before admitting them, or maybe deporting them to a concentration camp in El Salvador if they're feeling spicy that day.
I'll quote the bit relevant to the headline, but really, the entire thing is so relevant, and so troubling.
I worry that I might have been a bit brash with my American dining companions that night. (If any of them are reading this and if I was, sorry. Lot goin’ on over here.) But before I could worry about it too much, a senior military officer from a major (non-American) allied nation drove a stake right through the heart of the matter.
America has blown 80 years of accumulated goodwill and trust among its allies, our American moderator was told. A rock-steady assumption of allied defence and security planning for literally generations has been that America would act in its own interests, sure, but that those interests would be rational, and would still generally value the institutions that America itself worked so hard to build after the Second World War. America’s recent actions have destroyed the ability of any ally to continue to have faith in America to act even within its own strategic self-interest, let alone that of any ally.
The officer then said that even a swift return of America to its former role won’t matter.
Because “we will never fucking trust you again.”
The Americans at the table seemed somewhat startled by the heat of that pronouncement. I agreed with it entirely. So, it seemed to me, did most of the non-Americans.
I thought I should add that the author doesn't strike me as a rabidly progressive sort; but he's evidently a Canadian patriot.
u/shygaymer, there weren't enough votes to determine the quality of your post...
Canadian here. Our annual Florida vacation was rerouted to Scotland this year and next year isn’t looking good for Florida either.
The next Democrat president has to stack the SCofUS with 50 democrat judges. Then they have to put in term limits and age restrictions.
I am now 65, I will stay away from America for the rest of my life.
Not even possible without 50 willing senators which may not even happen because the whole country is stacked to give Republicans more representation. That was bidens problem. His margin was so thin it only took 1 person defecting to put those thoughts away.
Understand. I guess what you guys need then is a revolution.
I guess time will tell.
It's all of it. Senators are geared toward small states. In reality Dems should always have the house but because the 1920 cap on the house (we should have 1000 house seats now) it's again shifted to help Republicans
But apparently none of this is as important as taxes on tea.
That doesn't change the system that allowed all this.
> No
oneAmerican with a functioning brain will ever trust the USA again. Also this. I've been an American citizen since 1982, grew up here since age 4. And since 2015 it is as if I'm seeing my country (for I have no other citizenship) anew, and it's a horror movie.

Who'd trust that?
I'm sorry, I should have been clearer. I didn't mean that other countries would trust America. Rather, that -also- Americans would not trust America.
And everything you write is true: everything. Absolutely everything. My one hope is that the EU and America's East Asian allies (Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan) will together go on without America.
Fair enough.
We will all go on without America.
Never again are they ever going to be able to call themselves "Leader of the Free World".
Just a minor correction…
We aren’t JUST NOW committing war crimes. We’ve been doing it the whole time. Just more flagrant now with this administration.
Money and the possibility of taking Canadian natural resources without having to pay for them.
British - having seen a report on how your armed forces are producing some of the best snipers in the world the US would really be dumb to try and invade you.
The US has tried to invade us a few times. They were always sent packing.
There's a saying:
Once [Dubya] is bad luck.
Twice [Trump I] is coincidence.
Thrice [Trump II] is enemy action.
Enemy action.
We have a similar saying:
Fool me once, shame on...shame on you. Fool me...you can't get fooled again.
This is sad, and I don't blame you. I have truly enjoyed meeting our Canadian neighbors over the years. I would be avoiding the US if I were you too, but it's unfortunate these hateful assholes are making things worse for so many people.
True. I enjoyed my times in the US, but there is no way I am going to give my money to a country that is trying to destroy us.
Cheers
I 100% agree. I am in Canada intermittently for work so I can always meet new people on those trips.
Thank you for your support!
Just a heads up.
'Right now' is going to be a long time.
And then, there's everything else.
So 13 administrations?
Wish I could upvote you more than once as i feel the same.
Will never go back.
Elbows up Canada 🇨🇦
Technically 67% of Americans voted for Trump. All the non voters helped Trump win. America fucking sucks. Avoid us like the plague.
So safe to say you are not planning to come back during this or the next life.
Pretty much, except for the point that I've never been there, so "coming back" doesn't apply anyway.
Excellent choice!
Even though I have never lived outside the U.S., I'm pretty nervous about traveling outside the country.
For me it's not the traveling but the return. I'm not white. Will I get back in despite being a citizen.
Floridian here. Mom and pop small companies like us are dying and folding in the crossfire but disney and Hilton will be fine 😩
I’m sorry about that. It’s not about you, I just can’t spend my money in the US right now.
Oh , im not blaming you lol. Just dying from my idiot neighbors choices
I know, I do feel bad for folks like you though. People who think they’re smart ruining things for hard working people who don’t deserve it.
Just know its not half of America like voting insinuates. Half dont vote. Its a thin slice of brainwashed morons and they are in every country these days thanks to the internet and lack of good education.
But why didn't half vote? They are complicit too. If they voted, they could have changed things.
Aussie here. All of my social circles are boycotting US made/travel in support for our Commonwealth cousins.
US press it reporting the cause is everything other than Trump's rhetoric and disrespect. They need to know the truth. The capitulation is stunning.
We cancelled our Alaska cruise immediately he was voted in. Cue weeks of 30%-off offers, all studiously ignored until they gave up.
We usually do 2-3 ballparks each summer. This year we opted to do Newfoundland. Highly recommend
Glad you enjoyed our province. Come and see us again soon.
As a former Floridian, I recommend Scotland as well. The state is turning into a polluted hellscape thanks to bad policies and Ron DeSantis' wholesale attempts to sell the state's (now heavily polluted) parks for pickleball courts.
Have an irn bru and a bacon butty for me
Good
Also Canadian here, replace Florida with Mexico for my situation, but...same.
As an American… have you considered the non-US Caribbean? It’s all way better than the swampy confederate cesspool of Flo Rida.
Hawaii is the best.
But I wouldn't travel to the US at all if I was a citizen elsewhere.
Hawaii has their own tragic story of annexation by the US.
True. But that doesn’t change how amazing it is now.
It won't be looking good until at least 2029 to be realistic.
Oh same!! Enjoy Scotland! We just got back and I absolutely adored it. Beautiful place, super fun locals, and they love us Canadians!
Another Canadian here. Went to Banff instead of Yosemite.
Also converted all work visits to US to meetings (probably should have been meetings anyway in retrospect).
Message me if you come to Glasgow. I'll buy you a pint in solidarity
I’ve bookmarked this!
Canadian living in Florida
Good choice.
We were going to Disney. Went to Punta Cana instead.
You guys get vacations?
Honestly I’d rather Scotland
Interesting...why Florida if not for the warmth/amusement parks, and if that, why Scotland, assuming same season/reason?
Florida because it’s sunny and resort-like. Scotland because it was different and interesting. And next year will be somewhere else interesting!
Look into Spain- Granada in winter. Alhambra is lovely. Also has the sierra nevada nearby.
If you like your resorts to smell like swamp water, I can see this. California is actually resort like and doesn't have ridiculous Republican "governance." That said, the five years of social media history is going to be a problem.
My mom just moved to her place in Palm Springs and she says its a ghost town. None of her Canadian neighbors have come back for the winter.
So why do those senators come to Canada to whine when they should go to Washington to complain instead?
I assume the same reason family members try to get the reasonable person to roll over and take abuse rather than try to reason with the horrible person in the family. There's a much better chance the sane person can be reasoned with/guilted/shamed. You can't do any of that with Trump.
For the same reason people try to come down on victims over abusers. The abusers are known to use force and thats scary so they'd rather try an easier target.
What? You mean go to work? Surely, you jest.
cause they're pussies. going to canada is safer and costs them less politically. fighting trump takes half a spine and risking their political power.
If they think it is bad now, just wait for year four of the Mango Molester. I don't think the real drop-off has even started. All the prepaid travel is over.
It is obvious that Trump is end of life. He might last another 3 yrs but likely not. Once you start falling asleep at meetings you are near the end.
It doesn’t matter to Canadians. Trump showed us that America is not a Canadian ally and that at least half your country sees us as a vassal state that should be grateful they want us at all.
We’re done with this abusive relationship.
I am a Canadian. I agree with you. I will not go back. I have fairly severe asthma that is cold triggered. I would love to be south. Not going to happen.
BTW, lots of quisling Canadians too. They will always go south.
Vance will be worse, because he’s just Peter Thiel’s bitch.
Lots of Indians as we can see with Vivek Ramadamadingdong and Kash I am an incompetent Idiot Patel think they are white.
People said Trump could never be President.
And then he was.
Twice.
Never underestimate idiots.
Exactly this.
Be that as it may, all that means is Vance can start enacting the real agenda without having to go through grandpa first.
Actuarial tables say on average has over five years left. None of us had a clue about his health, but that’s what stats say for someone his age.
"We don't need anything from Canada"
Donald J. Trump, March 6th 2025
And that's not even scratching the surface of the other vile shit he said about Canada
Canadian here.
Stopped buying American alcohol.
Fuck I’m American and I won’t buy anything out of Kentucky or Tennessee until they can get their heads out their asses.
I live in Kenfucky and I'm not buying Appalachian booze until they grow brains. Italian wine is amazing btw.
You might have to wait a while for those brains to sprout. According to the other post above there might be a potash shortage. 😑🙃
So, never?
basically
Try South African wines. Cheaper than Californian and surprisingly good.
South Africa, Croatia, Aus, NZ, Georgia. Lots of small countries with varying degrees of burgeoning wine industries.
We got lots of great Canadian wine and I prefer cheap French or Italian wine over Californian wines anyday
Well done, MAGA /s
Idgaf, america deserves everything it gets. I'd boycott this trash country too if it were possible.
I know that I'm not part of the problem in the way MAGAts and their worm of a leader are, but I'm sitting over here feeling frozen, so I don't do much about this because I feel there's nothing we CAN do. So I sit immobile. That's how many of us are part of the problem 😞 I don't have any idea how else to help so I keep my people and community close. But I digress.
Canada, you do you. Just be careful; I wouldn't put it past our trash administration to make things bad/worse for y'all.
You guys can help. Boycott your own products when you can, don’t buy from big corporations like Amazon and support local business and farmers markets.
I hope they're looking for the guy who did this.
Maybe they should do better in elections? Just a thought.
It’s safer if he doesn’t until this is over.
I am glad I have dual citizenship (European) myself; I am thinking about leaving the country and taking my money with me.
Don't blame Canadians. Even in some of these states like Maine and New Hampshire who are responsible. Screw you Susan Collins!
Susan "I Think He Learned His Lesson" Collins
In the spirit of complete fairness, Trump trying to annex Canada was one of the few things he didn't foreshadow during his 2024 campaign. But let's face it, those idiots in the border states would've still voted for him even if he'd talked about it.
To the surprise of nobody.
I read an article the other day that DHS wants to get biometrics from all tourists trying to come to the USA for the World Cup next year.. on top of the tickets being so expensive that it would even make Ticketmaster cry.
The next WC is shaping up to be a total fiasco.
Think of the Hyundai battery plant that was massively delayed with the Korean specialists who left with no intention to return - and the fact that the next group will think twice if they will even give it a go (including the companies themselves considering whether they can even risk sending highly trained people.., who aren't expendable workers)
they want access to 5 years of your social media now.
If they decide to invade us, they’ll probably close the border in advance so that’ll bring the number of tourists to zero.
it's also a lot of prepaid vacations that people can't get refunds on so they go anyway. next year it'll get worse. by year 4 it'll crater.
I feel bad for the border states whose citizens did not, as a majority, vote for this administration. Everyone else that did support it deserves zero sympathy.
My parents have a seasonal in a May-October campground less than an hour from the border and said that it was significantly emptier without as many Canadians visiting.
Most of us are not coming back. The quislings will but most will not.
I had to admire the Americans in their boats who came north into Canada. It takes a lot of nerve to do that.
nah a lot of border states did vote for this. as a canadian who crossed the border a lot to pick up stuff i order, the hate you get towards canadian is there. they hide it well cause they only see your wallet, but you can tell what they really think of you as you walk around. the way they look at you when they see a canadian license plate.
It’s not a boycott, they’ve just moved on.
But no.
Elbows up, my Canadian friends! 🇨🇦
Not hard enough, apparently.
American here, I support your decision in your boycott of our country.
I’m in the US and wanted to say thank you 🫡
Good on Canada. Mad respect.
The so-called 51st state is fucking over the other 50, thanks to Trump.
Maybe Canada should call the US the 11th province.
We have enough of that sort of nonsense from Alberta. We really don't need to import any more.
Hey maybe we can arrange a swop. Send them Danielle Smith and her friends and take a bunch of sensible folks off them.
Alberta and a 1st round pick for Oregon, Washington, and California.
Absolutely not, we need those states to counteract the morons.
We don’t want the US as our 11th province. We are quite happy without their nonsense, thanks.
Be like a good corporation and pick out the good parts and leave the other parts to rot. Might as well make some money while you're twisting the knife.
Please take some of us!!! We can leave the red-states behind to wallow in their ignorance! Save the rest of us from their stupidity!
Save yourselves, then we’ll talk.
we don't want america or anything to do with it. every state is filled with gun toting maniacs. every state is filled with red pilled rural idiots.
Sorry, not sorry.
Sincerely,
Canada
Why in the everloving fuck would a Canadian even think of coming here? Most people I know wouldn't risk being randomly thrown into an ICE concentration camp.
My friend 'I actually went and the border was not that bad!'
Still doesn't change the fact that you went to a country treating us terribly
there was a news report where a canadian lady got detained, throw in prison sent to an ice facility, was finally released but says she still wants to visit the states. some people are brain damaged.
Good
Hey America, put that in your 'Trade Deficit' and smoke it!
Anyone can look at election results by county. Michigan voted for Trump. And Gratiot and St. Clair counties gave him comfortable majorities so fuck them. Why would I want to spend my money there? Whenever I visit my friend in Sarnia, we flip off the US anytime we face it.
Good. You deserve better places to visit, Canadians.
"You know what'll make it better? Requiring every tourist to provide 5 years of their social media use!"
WE’RE the ones straining relations? Fuck off. 😂
it's like russia blaming ukraine for straining their relations.
If I were Canadian, I would kick the US to the curb. The people that brought Dear Leader back with their vote are an embarrassment.
Sure but they'll still stand by the 51st state 'joke'
Good, keep it up Canada, speak with your wallet
I used to like to do a quick visit to Miami or NYC around this time of the year but now, no more.
I’ll go there for business trips when I have to but the recent news of Trump proposing the social media history for up to 5 yrs makes me really never want to go there in general.
Sad for those just trying to get by and didn’t vote for Trump who rely on tourism but happy for those who did vote for this and go around proclaiming Canada as “the 51st state” like aholes to feel these consequences.
Elbows up!
American here. Thank you Canadians for helping us who had our rights and voices taken away- help us boycott the country.
We appreciate it because the only thing that talks in this country is money.
But make visas harder, while claiming that Canadians only import drugs, that’s such a winning combo for tourism lol
I wonder if he’s going to “punish” Canada more with tariffs, the man is a one trick pony at this point…
Other states as well.
This is 100% trump and nobody else. 51st state crap.
This substack by a Canadian foreign policy type, about the Halifax International Security Forum seems relevant: https://www.readtheline.ca/p/matt-gurney-we-will-never-fucking
I'll quote the bit relevant to the headline, but really, the entire thing is so relevant, and so troubling.
I thought I should add that the author doesn't strike me as a rabidly progressive sort; but he's evidently a Canadian patriot.
Good
Those DOGE cheques, when they come in, can go straight back into the economy.
Yaaaaaaaaaaaay!
I totally understand. Stay away till we are better.
I had an annual late fall/early winter Vegas trip with my dad. We haven't gone in two years now.
I canceled a couple of trips to Palm Springs and New York and did Italy and the UK instead. It was baller.
I wonder if it has anything to do with your Bubba sucking leader.
This warms my heart
As well as any tourist destination, as those of us at tourist destinations can attest… we are dying out here, thanks Trump voters and non voters!
Good.
I love the Canadians for this. This quiet strength of standing up for yourself.
Good on them. Keep going.
