It's not "uneducated", although that definitely helps. Some of the more brilliant people I worked with have "a GED and motivation" as they would say it. And it's not some mental disability, although some people might be. It's just hard to describe.

They go through enormous amounts of insults and belittling to encourage obedience and tribalism in order to grow a more unified response to people they'll be given orders to kill if necessary. Individualism and questioning orders is highly discouraged until they've completed boot camp and then they have to learn to distinguish between legal and illegal orders.
