The Boston stories piss me off. It’s not about babies at all it’s about controlling people and being assholes to women. My college dorm in Boston was 1/2 block down the street from a planned parenthood and the next building past that was the only grocery store for miles. Every time I wanted milk or snacks I had to hear about how I was going to hell and get spit on. I wish I knew some more legal nuances back then because I would have involved the police when they forgot themselves and assaulted me (spitting, hitting with signs).
When i was much younger, I had a similar experience. I went into PP for birth control. Frankly, doesn’t matter why I was there. On my way out, I had a protester spit on me yelling that I should have been aborted. (Yay, hypocrisy!). I went back in, and used their phone to call the cops on him for non-peaceful protest. The nice folks in PP apologized (like it was their fault?!), and then thanked me for calling the cops. Of course, said protester was a big ol’ white dude presumably without a uterus who, according to the folks there, had been harassing patients for weeks.
That's why I volunteered as a clinic escort there for years. I did have to file a police report once against the protesters, but being a calm, welcoming face for patients was worth it.
When I did my college internship, I unknowingly lived right next door to the only abortion clinic in the state. I didn’t even realize it until the first day the protestors were there on the sidewalk as I was trying to get past them to get into my apartment but I was jeered and screamed at. One escort told me they were there every day and offered to walk me through in the future, even though I clearly wasn’t going in. I started to carry candy bars to offer them as a little reward for being good people to come out and shield terrified women from that experience. I don’t think anyone ever even took up on one but they liked being offered.
Then they held the national antiabortion convention in my city that summer. The theme was something about getting your kids involved in antiabortion activism early. They rented these trucks and put super graphic pictures on them and paid them to drive around town as moving billboards. And they covered my entire block all week protesting and shoving cameras in passerby’s faces to try to catch them off guard with their questions and sang hymns on the streetcars with their children. The clinic wasn’t even open that week since they knew the convention was there. Fucking stupid. These grown men kept sending their kids up to me while I was trying to get in my building and asking things like “do you murder babies? Does it bother you to live next door to a place that murders babies?” While filming. I patiently got down to their level and told them that god might love everyone but he would be awfully disappointed in their hateful hearts right now. I told one dad with feigned sympathy that I was really sorry that the daughter next to him would probably cut contact when she realized he hated her and wanted to control her bodily autonomy just to watch him sputter. I quoted scripture. I told one kid that the evil crowd that if crucified Jesus spit on him too. I told another that god is love, they don’t seem to have room in the hearts for him since it was so full of hate.
I wasn’t actively trying to engage, mind you. I was walking way out into the street to avoid the mob and still they would send kids out to meet me. The cops had to start enforcing a strict boundary bc they would surge towards anyone who walked by to shove cameras in your face and ask gotcha questions for their sizzle reel. I made damn sure to say stuff I hoped they wouldn’t use bc it might make too many people question their beliefs. And I hope I planted seeds of doubt in at least some of those kids’ minds.

I actually got to hear abortion praised in a church once. My aunt was a longtime OB/GYN in South Carolina. She unfortunately died last year, but it was absolutely amazing to me that at her funeral the pastor of her church talked about how she saved his daughter’s life by doing a D&C during her first pregnancy and because of my aunt, she was able to go on to have multiple kids later. I was just gobsmacked sitting in a church (built in the 1700s mind you) listening to him talk about this. I’m honestly glad she never had to deal with the post-Roe world of healthcare. I think she would have happily gone to jail rather than deny a woman the care she needed.

That's why I volunteered as a clinic escort there for years. I did have to file a police report once against the protesters, but being a calm, welcoming face for patients was worth it.
When I did my college internship, I unknowingly lived right next door to the only abortion clinic in the state. I didn’t even realize it until the first day the protestors were there on the sidewalk as I was trying to get past them to get into my apartment but I was jeered and screamed at. One escort told me they were there every day and offered to walk me through in the future, even though I clearly wasn’t going in. I started to carry candy bars to offer them as a little reward for being good people to come out and shield terrified women from that experience. I don’t think anyone ever even took up on one but they liked being offered.
Then they held the national antiabortion convention in my city that summer. The theme was something about getting your kids involved in antiabortion activism early. They rented these trucks and put super graphic pictures on them and paid them to drive around town as moving billboards. And they covered my entire block all week protesting and shoving cameras in passerby’s faces to try to catch them off guard with their questions and sang hymns on the streetcars with their children. The clinic wasn’t even open that week since they knew the convention was there. Fucking stupid. These grown men kept sending their kids up to me while I was trying to get in my building and asking things like “do you murder babies? Does it bother you to live next door to a place that murders babies?” While filming. I patiently got down to their level and told them that god might love everyone but he would be awfully disappointed in their hateful hearts right now. I told one dad with feigned sympathy that I was really sorry that the daughter next to him would probably cut contact when she realized he hated her and wanted to control her bodily autonomy just to watch him sputter. I quoted scripture. I told one kid that the evil crowd that if crucified Jesus spit on him too. I told another that god is love, they don’t seem to have room in the hearts for him since it was so full of hate.
I wasn’t actively trying to engage, mind you. I was walking way out into the street to avoid the mob and still they would send kids out to meet me. The cops had to start enforcing a strict boundary bc they would surge towards anyone who walked by to shove cameras in your face and ask gotcha questions for their sizzle reel. I made damn sure to say stuff I hoped they wouldn’t use bc it might make too many people question their beliefs. And I hope I planted seeds of doubt in at least some of those kids’ minds.

I actually got to hear abortion praised in a church once. My aunt was a longtime OB/GYN in South Carolina. She unfortunately died last year, but it was absolutely amazing to me that at her funeral the pastor of her church talked about how she saved his daughter’s life by doing a D&C during her first pregnancy and because of my aunt, she was able to go on to have multiple kids later. I was just gobsmacked sitting in a church (built in the 1700s mind you) listening to him talk about this. I’m honestly glad she never had to deal with the post-Roe world of healthcare. I think she would have happily gone to jail rather than deny a woman the care she needed.
