As a proud practitioner of Capoeira and representative of Abada Capoeira, I am compelled to express my deep concern over a growing issue that threatens the integrity and reputation of Capoeira and its representatives. Capoeira, for many of us, is much more than just a martial art. It is disheartening to witness any affiliations with individuals or organizations that condone or fail to hold accountable those who support war crimes.

On July 2024, The International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled that Israel is guilty of apartheid and its military occupation of Palestine is Illegal. In addition, on the 21st of November 2024, The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued warrants for Israel’s Prime Minister and former Defence Minister for war crimes and inhumane acts. In addition Amnesty International, the UN Commission and multiple other aid and humanitarian organisations have found evidence of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Israel's attacks against Gaza.

This is now a matter of where we choose to stand and how our actions go down in history. This is not just a matter of race or religion and should not be misconstrued as antisemitism or discrimination. We know for a fact that many Israeli citizens do not support their government's actions. Actions like blocking aid and purposefully starving a civilian population.

I call upon the Capoeira community, including practitioners and leaders, to demand accountability and transparency in all affiliations. Participants from Israel should sign a declaration, disavowing any support or involvement in Israel's war crimes and crimes against humanity. A failure to do so should result in a ban and boycott of said individuals and their groups.

Please sign this petition to keep humanity in Capoeira and reject affiliations with those who undermine its foundational values.
