so I posted here a couple of weeks ago saying my landlord/roommate was giving me a month to leave because of my cat… well a week ago she had a fit and I suggested ear plugs and she kicked me out and threatened to lock the deadbolt next time I left. I’ve moved out and I’m in my own place now, but it’s just funny looking back. Another thing, she is withholding my damage deposit even though I did not damage the property. I know I should fight for my money, but the trauma of the situation makes it hard for me to interact with her again. Obviously this is a point of privilege as I can go without that money but I think the emotional cost of interacting with her and the legal troubles will be worse than giving up that money. Is there a way to go about getting my money back without having to interact with her? Or should I just pretend it never happened?

  • Put your big girl panties on and advocate for yourself! Look up the time frame that damage deposits are supposed to be returned by in your state, then send her a demand letter via certified mail for your deposit after that date has passed. If she still refuses to pay, take her to small claims court and get your money and ask for filing fees. People like this treat others like shit because their victims refuse to fight back.

ADVOCATE FOR YOURSELF! And then in turn youre also helping advocate for futures tenants. You would have to be a really stupid landlord to make the same mistakes 2x if this ended up going to small claims

  • She threatened an illegal self-help eviction. Go get your money. She not only owes them deposit, but other damages because she broke the law.

  • Girl/Boy.. absolutely not! Go get your bag.
