• No where near the same levels as LA Metro/US transit. I’ve taken metro in China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, you name the East Asian country. It’s a remarkably quiet, clean, and safe journey 999 times out of 1000.

Truly I think the biggest difference is from volume of ridership. Even when there’s crazies they’re not as disruptive on a full car

Oh yeah they can be. Again, Daniel Penny anyone?

You must not have taken the NYC MTA where a woman was fully burned alive on the train! And who can forget the high profile case of Daniel Penny? Folks were on the train the next day without a care in the world. Why? Because NYC has strong DEMAND SIDE policies that make driving infeasible. You'll never get the ridership that you want by using carrots only.

Have ya traveled abroad, from Europe to Asia and a slightly lesser extent South America, their transit is far cleaner, and people far more respectful - in DC, half the time you have people blasting music and weed smoking - americas generally don’t care about others

  • Every city has problems but not as much as in the USA.

    It is what it is

    • 14 upvotes but I get downvoted how is this even wrong? This is literally true, I wasn’t trying to sound defensive about it. Guess no matter what I say people are gonna disagree with me, might even just probably go back to being anonymous on Reddit.
  • The funny thing is everyone in that subreddit is surprised and that isn’t the norm. Anyone who has traveled to an Asian county can tell you that transportation there is so much better. Our public transportation has a constant problem with crazy people.

Not just crazy, rude people as well - plenty of non crazy people playing music on their phones, shouting, and weed smoking now

  • It simply nowhere near comparable. I've spent last 10 days going trough Japan and Korea, not even once I've seen anyone behaving erratically on transit. Took subway in Osaka number of times, JR trains, shinkansen, subway and airport trains (both express and local) in Seoul, buses in Seoul. The only out of ordinary thing that happened was beggar coming up to me asking for money outside of Lotte outlets outside of Seoul station.

  • Let's not pretend it's at the same levels. We have the numbers.

While specific rankings for "pushed onto tracks" deaths are hard to find, California consistently leads the U.S. in overall rail casualties (pedestrians/trespassers), likely including LA due to population and sprawl, though LA Metro also sees incidents from assaults (shootings/stabbings) leading to deaths on tracks. LA Metro has had violent incidents on its rail lines, contributing to severe outcomes, but California's top ranking often reflects broader trespasser issues, not just deliberate attacks on passengers
