I didn't mind the first season, it wasn't perfect but it was a welcome change to most of the crap coming out at the time, and it did its best trying to capture that Fallout vibe, which at least showed the writers actually played the game. I didn't like how they portrayed the Brotherhood and the cliche "Vault-tec caused the war" nonsense but I gave it a shot.
But damn, four episodes into season 2 and it's just straight up MCU writing. Not a single faction has any redeemable qualities except the boring old NCR, who were never that straight up goody-two shoes in New Vegas in the first place (which was what made them interesting). Caesar's Legion was the closest to evil in the game, but their unapologetic philosophy made them intriguing villains, and they still managed to be seen as legitimate threat despite the hockey pad Roman look (that first time meeting them in Nipton was really memorable). Now, they're just straight up incompetent LARPers with a pointless celebrity cameo.
The brotherhood are either over-the-top fascist jerks or religious nutjobs (except for the one DEI minor character, of course). Not a single one of them act or talk like they are in a military (Which was always a defining part of their identity in the lore). Yes, I know they always discriminated against mutants and ghouls (for a reason), but it was never dialed up to the show's "shoot-the-ghoul-children-on-sight" absurdity. Also, the show has one Brotherhood chapter be sexist, because why not throw misogynistic in there as well.
The games never pretended the pre-war communists were any better, but you can see the overt sympathy the writers have when it comes to portraying them, making them sound like victims even when they're literally the ones invading Alaska (and were almost certainly responsible for launching the nukes in the game lore, since they were already losing the ground war in China by then). But no, evil capitalists are the real villains. Who would've guessed? I don't mind capitalist villains, but hell, Mr. House was still the most pragmatic choice in New Vegas (at least in my opinion). Ironically, the closest thing to collectivism was Caesar's Legion (I always thought he fact that they all wore red seemed to be hinting at that communism parallel).
Speaking of Mr. House, he is now heavily implied to be the one who helped vault-tec destroy the world. I haven't gotten far enough to know more about where they are really going with him, but since he's the personification of capitalism and the show's lack of nuance for anything complex or morally gray means it's probably going to lead to something cartoonishly evil. I don't know if I can make it that far.
Overall, it just seems the writers played through the game, chose the morally safest/softest options, and just trashed everything else that triggered them. In other words, uncreative fanfiction from someone who decides outcomes based on narrow-minded knee-jerk judgement. Bland. Bland. Bland.
16-year-old me: "this game is awesome! Oh man, I wish they would make a movie or a TV show adaptation of it!"
monkey's paw curls a finger
I've dreamt about a Fallout show for years. Too bad it became a DEI nightmare.
Just like the games themselves
House in the New Vegas game was actually pretty morally good by Fallout standards. Yes, he's a megalomaniac mad scientist, but considers chattel slavery like the Legion's horrendous, has no desire to take over the NCR or anything except Vegas itself, and sincerely worked hard (and mostly successfully) to save the population of Vegas in the war.
I know, he had the best vision out of all of them. I remember one of the main reasons players killed him was because he wanted to wipe out the brotherhood and people didn't want to betray Veronica. Pshh
"A small price to pay for salvation"
Fallout itself actually adresses exactly what's wrong with Fallout today in New Vegas with the term "Old World Blues", not the DLC named as such.
Old World Blues is an obsession with the symbols and ideas of the past, the old world, without any understanding of what those symbols mean, why they mattered and to whom.
Consumed by the past, unwilling to live in the present and unable to build anything for the future.
Bethesda is deep with the Old World Blues. They see the power armour and the NCR and the Legion, but they don't know why any of them work as factions. They appear visually to tick that box then they destory them outright. They have no idea what to do with them so they blow them up.
Seriously they just fucking nuke everything they dont understand.
What do we do with the NCR? Nuke them.
What about Lucy's dad's plans for the surface world. Nuke everyone.
What are the Legion's plans? Kill everyone.
What does the Brotherhood do? Kill everyone.
Bethesda's Old World Blues are so deep they manage to ruin a character like House who goes out of his way to painstakingly explain himself and his perspective to the player. He abhors being controlled and enslaving others - so what does he do on TV? Oh he invents a mind control device.
Oh but what if it's his half-brother? You mean the paranoid consipiracy nut that sealed himself away from the world in his office out of fear of the rest of the world? A literal tinfoil hat conspiracy nut - actually on the inside of a nationwide conspiracy yeah fuck off not a chance.
Even Fallout 3 is deeply comprimised by it's own imagery. It's been 200 years since the bombs fell, Washington DC is literally untouched with shit and debris everywhere, skeletons all over the place. If it was 20 or 30 years it'd be fine - but that would diqualify them using the Brotherhood of Steel and we have to have them in a Fallout game.
In Fallout 4, Trashcan Carla lives and operates out of the Red Rocket Truck Stop. There is a complete human skeleton in one of the booths of her cafe. She lives there. It's her place of buisness. But it's a "post-apocalypse" so there has to be bodies everywhere. It's been well over 200 years has wind or wild animals not gone at this thing?
Fuck Bethesda for ruining Fallout.
To be fair, I believe Fallout 3 was supposed to be much earlier in the timeline than 200 years into the thing (because that's what I've seen people say around), and is why the clean water thing was supposed to be that important in the first place, but they've rechanged it to be further into the future.
Fallout 3 was just reusing an earlier plot from previous games. Same enemy (Enclave), same evil plan. Eden even mentions this. It was basically like The Force Awakens of the fallout franchise. It was my first Fallout game so there's nostalgia bias for me, but people who grew up with the older games will take issue with Bethesda.
That's been speculated a lot because it makes so much sense, but if so it must have changed very early in development because in all the write ups and documentation of FO3s development it's never ever mentioned.
Bethesda could just be stupid, and want the Brotherhood in the game to utilise those past symbols.
The good news is Maximus isn't the stupidest character in the show anymore. The bad news is Maximus isn't the stupidest character in the show anymore.
He stayed about the same, but he's not even in the top 10 anymore.
I almost believed they couldn't make season 2 worse than season 1, but by golly, they've done it.
Maximus is the main reason I dropped season 1. I couldn't stand his scenes anymore. And, well, just sick of DEI in general. Why are any of us even watching woke trash? Watch anime until DEI dies.
That last line makes you sound like a total virgin bro
How so?
Fallout is trash. No respect for the lore, shits all over New Vegas to prop up Fallout 4 and 76, and honestly just the fact they retcon so much just to jangle keys in front of casuals that don't know better... Ruins it. Especially with the destruction of the BoS lore. One of my favorite factions, so I can't forgive them for destroying them by adding a stupid ass power armor flaw that just nerfs the armor.
Literally corporate and cultural vandalism. And all because of ego.
Fallout season 1 was fucking woke garbage.
This, it's crazy how people try and claim it's not.
Lmao… I have an “anti-woke libertarian” friend who watches and plays every single piece of woke slop show and game and thinks I’m crazy for not participating.
“I usually hate forced lgbt+ stuff, but it totally worked and felt natural in Stranger Things”
I think it’s like a severe form of sunk cost fallacy. “Oh I like the fallout games so the show has to be good”.
That is the main reason i didn't even bother watching s2. Of course I knew they'd mess up the factions, their moralities and portrayals and i was right. These left wing millennial writers are the worst.
And yet they managed to somehow make season 2 even worse💀
I saw it in episode one and dropped it after that,I think alot of people ignored it because there was a dry spell of shows at the time and they just wanted to be part of the fanfare
I legitimately felt like I was getting gaslit, S1 was total fucking garbage and I just saw everyone praising it to high heaven.
It's been obvious that the writers for the series don't actually give a shit about the lore of the games since they've been telling us non-stop that the NCR is dead and gone. Essentially wiped out off screen even if it doesn't make logical sense. All the shills will tell you that it's just the characters don't KNOW that the NCR is around in other places! But modern writers aren't smart enough to do something like that anyway.
Just another "lemme bastardize the IP to tell my fanfic slop garbage"
First season was trash too. Awful writing and characters even if you dont know about fallout lore. They didnt play the game. They got a list of jingling keys to reference for the audience thats played fallout 4 and 76. A lot of braindead casuals clapped like seals whenever these member berries are put on screen. Theyve shit all over everything bethesda didnt make. Retconning major parts of the lore, like trying to say vault-tec is responsible for the world being nuked because capitalism bad and muh. With the non-sensical idea that they could make profits after killing the majority of the human population, that makes no sense, its commies who want to rule over ashes. Trying to make fallout as whole about capitalism being bad instead of its real original theme of humans inevitably always being in conflict. War, war never changes.
Theyve also destroyed the grim and sincere tone of the first 4 games, that had the occasional joke. This show, and fallout 76 for that matter, has turned fallout into borderlands. Constant cringe and jokes.
In case you arent aware, theyve said this show and all its retcons are canon and will be used as the basis for the next game. Fallout is dead. Its a merch brand now. Unironically turning it into the thing they think theyre criticizing, soulless consumerism.
The show probably even breaks the canon of the 2 newest shit games. That's just how Bethesda rolls
Are you telling me Fallout 4 was good? It's exactly what the show is. A theme park ride with everyone being an idiot because "that's funny guys".
The first 4 games are 1, 2, 3, and new vegas.
Fallout 4 was fine for me, didnt love it didnt hate it. 76 is DEI grind slop just meant to occupy your time and milk your wallet. I reached endgame of it and the story was extremely forgettable, with girl bosses everywhere.
Fallout 4 isn't good. Gameplay wise it's the best of the combat system, but that's about it. Everything else about it is a huge step down. Both in quest design and the forced settlement building. Not getting into how lame having a voiced lead is, because they use the mass effect system, where all dialogue is just yes, but it doesn't sound like how it is read when you press it.
I thought it was ok.
It has better gunplay the previous entries and has a neat crafting system along with a fun but repetitive settlement system.
Bruh. Not only did they disrespect the old lore, they even disrespected the lore established in Fallout 3, especially the art style of Adam Adamowicz, who literally tried to carry over and adapt the visual identity of the classic Fallout games into Fallout 3. That’s why the environments, architecture, and overall atmosphere feel more serious.
Then Adam Adamowicz died in 2012, and Bethesda was basically like, “fuck it — now we’re turning Fallout into Borderlands + Disneyland.” Everywhere you look, there are idiotic metal houses, brightly painted skyscrapers, and tons of items — especially Nuka-Cola — and guns that have been completely ruined. Oh yeah, I'm talking about that piece of shit assault rifle.
I hate the settlement system. It's annoying to have to deal with, but the gunplay is much better than the previous games, albeit it does have some steps down. Like making every gun lefthanded, but the PC is right handed. And the lackluster Assault Rifle design.
I forgot about the guns being left-handed lol. Weird choice
They did it to show off how the mechanisms work, but it just looks really odd and baffling if you know anything about guns.
I enjoyed the settlement system, but it shouldnt be forced on people. I like building and management games so it was cool for me.
I don't mind it if it's like an optional thing. But with it being forced for every aspect of the game makes it annoying.
Fallout 4 is fine. I'm sick of everyone saying it sucked
I depends on your tastes. It sucked if you like the more serious darker art style of previous games. Aswell as not wanting a voiced MC, I prefer silent MCs so the text option you choose is what you actually choose to say. You can also give you character any voice you want in your head. Unlike a voiced MC who will say something completely different from the option you chose.
And you're surprised...?
It's baffling to me how many people still engage with modern woke trash.
We all knew what it was going to be. Why are people surprised?
It's designed for normies that don't play games, but rather just want to watch something live action based off a game, so they can pretend to be a fan of it.
As someone who watched season 1, and yet has only played one Fallout game for like an hour, I'd say this makes perfect sense.
I enjoyed the season, but that's probably because I know next to nothing about the games beyond the basic concept.
Because you need to engage some of it if you want to give accurate criticism. You can't always just rely on YouTube outrage channels to tell you how to feel, because that makes you no different from the woke normies.
Season 1 was clear enough that it's woke trash, no need to keep watching to confirm what everybody already knows.
True as that may be, we are past the point of "wait and see" when it comes to captured media from the west. This is Amazon, the whole company is captured and they have ore that enough resources to eat the losses. Once you know how they think and what they believe you know what they will do to the IPs you love. The Warhammer show didn't give Henry Cavil full creative freedom because they have to ensure that their "input" is in the show. They dragged out negotiations for the Bond franchise and also refused to give full creative freedom, why do you think that is?
The only way they will dial back wokeness is to avert immediate backlash and just add it in later, best thing to do is write them off based on their beliefs because they will eventually force it in, guaranteed
It certainly says a few things when YouTube quietly shadow-bans comments regarding China having shot first during the Great War according to the actual Fallout lore.
As for not minding season 1, when they portray a mega-corporation that chooses to destroy worldwide economy, logistics, and a good 90% or so of population to "sell vaults", everything else the show does wrong as it pisses all over not only the old Fallout lore but also Bethesda's (which it's been doing ever since 4, to be fair, which retconned a lot of Bethesda's stuff as well - Emil can't help himself, it seems) is honestly just more of the same.
Fallout's been dead for a decade by now, and that this is what the "modern audience" will associate with the name is an outcome that's tragic but not unexpected. One can only hope to wait out the corporate slop era so another auteur period sets in where actually talented individuals or teams can build iconic things of their own again that don't get overshadowed by mediocrity.
It's possible for auteurs to make a comeback but we have two things standing in the way.
What platforms will they use for distribution because damn near all of them are moderated in the woke "kid friendly" direction.
Customers have to be way more willing to seek out and curate these works themselves, rather than what they re doing now which is letting some biased algo do the heavy lifting.
I used to be that way and have been much happier seeking stuff out where ever I can find it, sometimes literally reading a comments section will yield something, but most people will go the lazy route.
It doesn't help much when the algorithm also deliberately hides stuff even with active search, needing a direct link to see something it sees as "wrong".
As for the moderation, yeah, pretty much. Doesn't stop said kids from easily finding the proverbial Elsa porn and, nowadays, oceans of neuroslop of differing degrees of brainlessness, so pretty much every "think of the children" initiative failed spectacularly so far.
No, the first season was straight trash. How you thought it "did its best" and gave the 2nd season your time, I'll never fathom.
Free will and opinion, probably.
Some opinions are better than others.
Correct
That’s the problem with most of the game adaptations now! They target those people who watches gamers and think they get it.
huh? Both seasons are crap and full of retcons, Fallout 4/76 is also crap.
It was obvious where this show would end up, which is why I never bothered with the first season either.
I found season 1 to be mid, but I thought it was good enough... Season 2 however so far is just bad. The forced humor/MCU writing is dragging it down for me. I've only seen one scene in the S2 so far that I liked and wasn't screwed up by the forced humor, and that was the Alaska flashback scene. The one time they didn't try to act like the MCU and it was good.
Season 1 had some good parts, but also a lot of millennial cringe and the weird idpol character insert. Then they reached the end, and revealed the message: communism good, capitalism bad! That's when the extent of the subversion was revealed.
I haven't really played Fallout since the New Vegas days (tried 4, but it wasn't really for me), so I'm quite rusty on lore. I'm sure a lot of other stuff would have stood out to me had I brushed up on the lore before watching S1.
One thing they did relatively right was the female protagonist: she's NOT an invincible girlboss. It makes her seem more real.
I think if Nerdrotic can give them credit for that, so can I.

what irks me is how they don't take anything or anyone seriously. the BOF and the Legion are complete clownfests and while the games always had an underlying comedic tone the show seems to think "haha the world is crazy, let's have a laugh about it". first season was WAY better, the humour blended much more subtly, s2 is exploding heads treated as circus gags
the woman with moustaches is still the most WTF thing, and they doubled down on social messaging. Fortunately they know people watch because Walton Goggins so at least he isn't being wasted
season 1 was entertaining if you just assume it's non-canon, season 2 isn't even entertaining so far
no modern writer plays or checks the source material, never, they either read the wikipedia articles or have people summarize stuff for them, if they played 5 minutes they would know how retarded was to change the position of the gigantic dino thing from novac
hmm
Bethesda has continually messed up lore since 3. Plot was terrible, stupid stuff like no, you can't send the mutant in you have to kill yourself instead to be teh heroez. Modders have to sort out everything Bethesda does horribly. Why wouldn't they mess up New Vegas as well?
You got bait and switched? SAY IT AIN'T SO! 🫨
Is it safe to drop "TODD HOWARD YOU INCOMPETENT BASTARD"
I enjoyed Fallout 3/4/NV and I am mostly enjoying the show. Sure they play it loose with some of the canon but for some light entertainment it's fine.
The gratuitous violence in the games didn't bother me as much - but I find it extremely annoying in the show; do we really need to see heads exploding every single episode? That makes it look just as terrible as The Boys. Also putting that one character in the Brotherhood of Steel is so stupid; if the writers really need the character for funding reasons or whatever, then the Vault Dwellers would have been a much better faction.
They arent just "playing it loose" with the canon. They've stated these retcons are the new canon going forward into future games.
Agreed. I have my issues with the show, but overall, I've really enjoyed it. Doesn't hurt that Walton Goggins is a main character
Wrong on all fronts the brotherhood has always been a bunch of tech supremacists fanatics
Wrong on all fronts. I never said they weren't. Learn to read.
