Okay cool. Well since its clearly "not for me," I won't bother looking at their website or giving them any traffic. Let's see how long this little grift works out for them. I'm doubting it will last over a year.

Yesterday a radio station in L.A. was listing examples of government grift. My favorite example:
This radio show has easily devoted 1000+ hours to discussions of the Palisades fires in California.
While digging through government grants for the Palisades fires, they found all the usual suspects:
Money that should have gone to fire victims, redirected to fund homeless programs. (Average home prices in the Palisades was $5M)
Money that should have gone to fire victims, redirected into non-profit black holes
But the radio station was delighted when they found that some random I.T. dork had signed up for a government grant.
Why?
Because they brought up the Palisades Fire on their podcast, which had hundreds (dozens?) of listeners.
So the dude on the radio, who'd spent 1000+ hours discussing the fires, he doesn't get government money. But some random person with a day job in I.T. and a side hobby doing a podcast, THEY get $100K.
And when you look at the pedigree of the people writing these attacks on you, and your hobby, and your family, and your politics...
notice how little experience they have.
Connect the dots, and you'll see that the government isn't buying the media outright, they're just handing them government grants. And it doesn't take much effort for them to find someone who'll deliver a carefully curated message, a message that might even sound "organic."
But when everything is said and done, it's still (legal) vote manipulation. They're not hiring people per se, but if someone handed me $100,000 to say something on a podcast to twelve people? Yeah, I can see why people would do that.
There are thousands (millions?) of people who spend all their time just looking for free money from the government. They found a program that provided a grant for podcasters, so they signed up for it and they got it.
This is great news when you think about it, they'll make lots of articles and valuable interviews that will show propaganda, so we will know in the earliest which games we should avoid.
We are always supposed to archive links. Archived links don't give clicks (which is good in this case, less so for websites we want to support), but I get what you mean, just talking about them can raise their profile.
Somehow I feel like they are going to be the next The Gamer with completely outlandish takes.
"In the age of traditional gaming journalism dying out, let's make another traditional gaming resource. But this time, let's focus only on the smaller part of our potential clients."
Imagine a moron who decided to invest after hearing this pitch?
Well as far as I’m aware gender theory teaches that gender is self defined (As opposed to biological sex) so I’m guessing this will be more ‘Why Princess Peach should be a girl-boss and not a damsel in distress’ or ‘Samus istotallya (I think my post might get removed if I say that word) woman and that’s a good thing!’ kind of articles.
the editors ask interested readers and viewers for their support so the team can produce stories about "the state of labor, gender, equity, and culture in gaming—while also building an online community where we all feel comfortable."
The site is proudly queer and woman owned, and Myers noted in an email that it seeks to really serve and resonate with its intended audience: "we're writing for the girls, gays, and theys, and just truly embracing that," she said, referencing her roots as a writer for the original iteration of The Mary Sue (co-founded by Susana Polo, another former Polygon editor and featured Mothership contributor). "'Teen Vogue but for video games' is another version of the elevator pitch," she said.
"Playing games is always also about the nature of gender, identity, and performance."
"You’ll get investigative reporting on the people who make games in an era when "DEI" is on the wane. You’ll read historical deep dives on the games and creators that paved the way, especially those that didn’t get due credit way back then."
"Playing games is always also about the nature of gender, identity, and performance."
Is this real life? Do people honestly look at the games I played from before 2005 and think its all about patriarchy and conflict between the sexes? Like was the Wind Waker really about gender? WTF
Wouldn't be surprised if straight women of gay men who happen to be white and middle class would get written off too due to "not being diverse enough".
great. this is a product that very clearly signposted so its audience know what they're getting. A website for women, gay people and 'theys' that discusses gender, equity and representation in video gaming.
if this iyour thing, then have at it! The main issue other people had was finding this sort of stuff in places where they really weren't looking for it.
Sadly, these dedicated websites can also act as trailblazers for other "journalists". Like an orchestra conductor, setting the partition and tone for everyone else to follow.
great. this is a product that very clearly signposted so its audience know what they're getting.
That was one of the big issues that caused Gamergate to break out in the first place
Gaming outlets that had been sociopolitically impartial five years prior started leaning hard to the left on basically every topic - but the change happened so gradually, and it was affecting basically every journalist in the western world at the same time, so they would have balked at the idea that they had an obligation to clearly signpost their sociopolitical leanings
"the state of labor, gender, equity, and culture in gaming—while also building an online community where we all feel comfortable."
All of us? Even God loving, traditional values, family oriented righties?!?
We're so saturated in far left politics and so used to it invading our spaces, but think how lame this really is. I get that gaming is ground everyone is fighting over, but if you're going to create a media site or a zine shouldn't it at least put gaming first rather than culture war. How about let's make a site: "The state of God, guns, family values, and tradition in gaming." !
I want gaming content made by people who love games, not articles made by middle aged female HR managers looking to proselytize the-new-religion(tm).
i hope their site blows like seriously? these are the people who shit on us for just existing i really don't care at this point if they lose funding im tried of this nonesense i been dealing with it for years and i hope it ends eventually!. (sidenote, you are not a game journalist if your focus isn't about the games)
Another reminder - sexism, racism, and segregation is cool as long as The Right People are doing it. No, no they will never become self aware of their utter hypocrisy. Such hateful, close minded people.
Great, good for them. It’s a site I will never visit but it’s another data point for the modern audience to show up and support. I give it 6 months, maybe a year if they can get outside funding (likely)
1000th game journalism site to make exactly $0!
Breaking even is a distant dream for these equity destroying shills.
Why sell your product for $5 when you can sell nothing and collect that sweet sweet government money?
All you have to do is check a few boxes.
they'll stick it to that evil capitalism!
Don't need to make money when you got sorosbux sustaining you!
they make money by being funded by billionaires
Okay cool. Well since its clearly "not for me," I won't bother looking at their website or giving them any traffic. Let's see how long this little grift works out for them. I'm doubting it will last over a year.

Why did the IT guy get a grant?
Because they asked for one.
There are thousands (millions?) of people who spend all their time just looking for free money from the government. They found a program that provided a grant for podcasters, so they signed up for it and they got it.

Absolutely not.
I don't recognize that name myself, is she known in various circles among the likes of Sarkeesian/Mercante and that ilk?
GameJournoPros member, and someone who's basically been an industry activist for a very long time.
GJP?? Damn, can't believe I've either forgotten or never come across her name.
More grifters
I really hope we don't allow any post from this site here.
All it ends doing is giving them exactly what they want. Rage bait

Same,
I've noticed there has been a lot more of that type of stuff lately, especially around the gender war stuff.

Say what? “Gender-focused”? Does that mean acknowledging genders exist?
[deleted]
<pssst> I was joking.
Well as far as I’m aware gender theory teaches that gender is self defined (As opposed to biological sex) so I’m guessing this will be more ‘Why Princess Peach should be a girl-boss and not a damsel in distress’ or ‘Samus is totally a (I think my post might get removed if I say that word) woman and that’s a good thing!’ kind of articles.
The pretension in that profile pic, lol
Shouldn’t that be “birthing partnership”
No no the new one is "egg-laying personship".
Ok good, have fun and stay away
If my gaming tastes overlapped at all with theirs I'd have to seriously question myself.

>"Playing games is always also about the nature of gender, identity, and performance."
I absolutely agree on the performance part, hate it when devs don't optimize their games. Not sure about the other two.
Is this real life? Do people honestly look at the games I played from before 2005 and think its all about patriarchy and conflict between the sexes? Like was the Wind Waker really about gender? WTF
When these people say "Everything is sexist" and "Everything is political", they MEAN it.
if a game features a male protagonist and female supporting characters, its by definition sexist. at least according to these people.
"Why isn't there a female protagonist"?
"Why does the main character have a stable middle class family and not a broken one?"
Pong was EXTREMELY problematic. Basically just goonerbait for chuds.
They're theater kids. They don't think about performance as a measuring stick of competence and ability.
Just say "we're writing for everyone but straight dudes. fuck them." and get it over with.
Wouldn't be surprised if straight women of gay men who happen to be white and middle class would get written off too due to "not being diverse enough".
Doubt they'll ever actually come for liberal white women. It's their core demographic. They don't have influential numbers without the Karens.
Nothing wrong wirh this. We're not their target audience. Complaining about this is like complaining they make movies for women.
You have to question the sanity of people who keep investing their money in these things.
You could probably replace the entire human factor with AI these days though, might make writing pro-DEI shit cheap.
Mothershit

This person specifically ruined my fucking hobbies.
Sadly, these dedicated websites can also act as trailblazers for other "journalists". Like an orchestra conductor, setting the partition and tone for everyone else to follow.
its just gonna go under fifty times like kotaku.
in other news, looks like kotaku is on its last life now.

lol, so much for inclusion when they themselves build a fence around their types. good news, actually
It. Just. Doesn't. End.
So, it’ll be DOA
All of us? Even God loving, traditional values, family oriented righties?!?

Hey, no skin off my nose. Anybody who'd take such a thing seriously was never going to be my buddy anyway.
Another reminder - sexism, racism, and segregation is cool as long as The Right People are doing it. No, no they will never become self aware of their utter hypocrisy. Such hateful, close minded people.
nonbuynary

Good maybe they'll leave us alone, not likely but I could still hope lol. That site will die within a year
Same energy as buying BTC in 2021 or NVDA in 2023.
It's over, guys. Meta's changed.
No. F that. Also they making people pay to read their feminist slop.
Cultural appropriation. Get em outa here.
Oh sweet, more games urinalist regards crying about nu-nu-Lara Croft looking like a ''supermodel''.
Please, self-quarantine your lunacy.
