I used to think Alaska was an island because of how they presented Alaska on tests.

Hello everyone! As a reminder this is a satire subreddit for the dumb/silly things children do. The subreddit name is not literal. Although posts can have kids doing actual "stupid" things. It is not a requirement. Yes, blaming the parent is valid. However, this does not mean crossing the line into actually insulting the parent is ok (assuming they are the OP) (Rule #1).

This is also not a hate sub for children. If you don't like kids, that's fine. Just don't spread vitriol.

Please read the sidebar for more information.

I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please contact the moderators of this subreddit if you have any questions or concerns.

My mom was a second grade teacher and one of her kids was wondering how the climate was so different between Alaska and Hawaii even though they are next to each other.

    parent
    63 points SugarSpiceSirens

I also wondered the same thing when I was much younger, I got to know that they are in different geographical locations

    parent root
    39 points wbpayne22903

I used to also think Texas was bigger than Alaska because of the fact that on those kind of maps Alaska is never presented at the same scale as the continental US.

    parent root
    1 points martymar2g

Alaskan is about 2.5 the size of Texas but has only a fraction of its population

    parent root
    138 points Current_Lie_5891

I'm glad I'm not the only kid who though Alaska was an island or near the U.S. šŸ˜†

I've seen adults ask this question. At least a 7 year old isn't too late.

This is why globes are important.

That and to try to get ahead of any flat earth considerations lol

    parent
    59 points White_Sugga

Worlds round, it's the moon that's flat. Jeesh, open a book.

    parent root
    9 points AlarmDozer

After learning about gravity, I’ve always known that round is just how the Universe do.

    parent root
    3 points snugglyaggron

(snorts) what, you think the moon is real?

    parent root
    2 points White_Sugga

    I have read nothing conclusive

    parent root
    8 points jws1102

The thing about flat earthers is that none of them were raised that way, they became flerfs as an adult. They’re not smart enough to understand the solar system model, so they default to something much easier, then call everyone else stupid because it makes them feel good to be on the giving end for once.

    parent root
    7 points al3x_7788

    "Everyone's dumb but me."

    parent root
    1 points cyberjar69

Is it easier? The laws of physics literally break with the flat earth model. Gravity pulls towards the center of mass and given the size of the earth, ball

    parent root
    3 points jws1102

They don’t believe in any of that. Not kidding. They also think on a globe model south literally means down and that rivers flowing north disprove the globe. Again not kidding. I really wish I were.

Most flerfs are also creationists. Saying ā€œgod designed it this way for usā€ is easier because as long as you can just say ā€œgod did itā€ then you have the answer for everything and never have to confront he possibility that you may be wrong.

There’s a whole cottage industry of YouTube channels dedicated to debunking these people, and they’re very entertaining. If you like politeness, try SciManDan. If you want some brutal mockery, Professor Dave is where it’s at.

My sister always thought that the archipelago "Svaldbard" islands far north of Norway always was right outside to the west coast of northern Norway, as the weather report always had it put in there.

    parent
  • 18 points SirLoremIpsum

Maps in Australia had Australia in the middle - so USA on the right, Europe on the left.

For ages Tom Clancy books really confused me with this "East vs the west" when the US was indeed in the East with USSR in the middle. US East coast couldn't possibly help Europe .. it's over the map!

    parent
  • 33 points TheSpeakingScar

Honest question, no offense but, how did you explain the one, long, incredibly straight coastline to yourself?

    parent
    20 points Current_Lie_5891

I did not lol I was not a smart kid I was in middle school and when I was 6 I thought the United States was the whole globe not one country šŸ˜†.

    parent root
    13 points The_Stoic_One

There are plenty of adults who still think that, so don't be too hard on yourself.

Some radio personalities were talking about this last week, coincidence?

    parent
    2 points Inevitable_Sort6988

The radio personality (TJ) is 47 and thought Alaska was an island south west of California. She blamed it on her Nebraska education.

    parent
  • 3 points ecplectico

Did you think Alaska was off the coast of Arizona, too?

I used to think Chicago was a state because of how much they talked about it on the news.

    parent
  • 3 points PotterGirl7

my mother thought this until I corrected her in her 40s. a lot of people have this misconception, especially in childhood.

    parent
  • 3 points Spooky_Tree

I never thought it was an island but there was no convincing me that it was bigger than Texas. If all the other states were true to size, why would I understand that Alaska and Hawaii were not?

    parent
  • 3 points DryRelationship1330

Aside, but I thought thunder got louder the farther north you drove. I thought storms sat over the earth.

  • 2 points DoubleResponsible276

Interesting. I think that’s the reason this girl in HS didn’t know where Canada was

    parent
    2 points LoanDebtCollector

It's between Alaska and the 48 continuous states. LOL.

    parent root
    2 points DoubleResponsible276

We told her that and she said so it’s next to Mexico? And then someone hinted it’s north cause it’s so cold there, her response, but Mexico is south.

    parent root
    1 points LoanDebtCollector

As a Canadian I am amused. I'll also point out that when I was in high school we would sometimes ask people to draw a rough map of Canada. This "map" often seemed to include Alaska, and Greenland. We often were taught with maps that looked a bit like this one:

UK here. When I was a child I thought that Nuneaton was the capital of Hungary.

    parent

My mother stated a few years ago that Alaska was south of Hawaii off the Mexican coast because that's where it is on most maps. She also believed Alaska was too small to be shown at scale on the map so it is in a zoomed-in box.

    It was shocking.
