Hello everyone! As a reminder this is a satire subreddit for the dumb/silly things children do. The subreddit name is not literal. Although posts can have kids doing actual "stupid" things. It is not a requirement. Yes, blaming the parent is valid. However, this does not mean crossing the line into actually insulting the parent is ok (assuming they are the OP) (Rule #1).
This is also not a hate sub for children. If you don't like kids, that's fine. Just don't spread vitriol.
My mom was a second grade teacher and one of her kids was wondering how the climate was so different between Alaska and Hawaii even though they are next to each other.
I used to also think Texas was bigger than Alaska because of the fact that on those kind of maps Alaska is never presented at the same scale as the continental US.
The thing about flat earthers is that none of them were raised that way, they became flerfs as an adult. Theyāre not smart enough to understand the solar system model, so they default to something much easier, then call everyone else stupid because it makes them feel good to be on the giving end for once.
Is it easier? The laws of physics literally break with the flat earth model. Gravity pulls towards the center of mass and given the size of the earth, ball
They donāt believe in any of that. Not kidding. They also think on a globe model south literally means down and that rivers flowing north disprove the globe. Again not kidding. I really wish I were.
Most flerfs are also creationists. Saying āgod designed it this way for usā is easier because as long as you can just say āgod did itā then you have the answer for everything and never have to confront he possibility that you may be wrong.
Thereās a whole cottage industry of YouTube channels dedicated to debunking these people, and theyāre very entertaining. If you like politeness, try SciManDan. If you want some brutal mockery, Professor Dave is where itās at.
My sister always thought that the archipelago "Svaldbard" islands far north of Norway always was right outside to the west coast of northern Norway, as the weather report always had it put in there.
Maps in Australia had Australia in the middle - so USA on the right, Europe on the left.
For ages Tom Clancy books really confused me with this "East vs the west" when the US was indeed in the East with USSR in the middle. US East coast couldn't possibly help Europe .. it's over the map!
My brother believed this into his 30s.Ā Literally tried calling me out in front of the whole extended family when I flew back from law school one Christmas and was taking about a road trip I took up there one summer.Ā I like to remind him of this often š
I was subbing in a HS class when some kids were arguing about why we couldn't just build a bridge from California to Alaska to Hawaii š¤¦š½āāļø
I never thought it was an island but there was no convincing me that it was bigger than Texas. If all the other states were true to size, why would I understand that Alaska and Hawaii were not?
We told her that and she said so itās next to Mexico? And then someone hinted itās north cause itās so cold there, her response, but Mexico is south.
As a Canadian I am amused. I'll also point out that when I was in high school we would sometimes ask people to draw a rough map of Canada. This "map" often seemed to include Alaska, and Greenland. We often were taught with maps that looked a bit like this one:
I knew a girl applying to college who was going to go to Hawaii because it was an island but āstill so close to the USā. Surprised she could get in anywhere.
My mother stated a few years ago that Alaska was south of Hawaii off the Mexican coast because that's where it is on most maps. She also believed Alaska was too small to be shown at scale on the map so it is in a zoomed-in box.
A girl from my nursing school thought this! She was absolutely brilliant with nursing stuff so we thought she was kidding (she is a natural blonde)⦠there was a guy from Alaska and she was so confused about how heād driven his truck over the oceanā¦

My mom was a second grade teacher and one of her kids was wondering how the climate was so different between Alaska and Hawaii even though they are next to each other.
I also wondered the same thing when I was much younger, I got to know that they are in different geographical locations
I used to also think Texas was bigger than Alaska because of the fact that on those kind of maps Alaska is never presented at the same scale as the continental US.
Alaskan is about 2.5 the size of Texas but has only a fraction of its population
I'm glad I'm not the only kid who though Alaska was an island or near the U.S. š
I've seen adults ask this question. At least a 7 year old isn't too late.
This is why globes are important.
That and to try to get ahead of any flat earth considerations lol
Worlds round, it's the moon that's flat. Jeesh, open a book.
After learning about gravity, Iāve always known that round is just how the Universe do.
(snorts) what, you think the moon is real?
I have read nothing conclusive

"Everyone's dumb but me."

Also Alaska is huge. Here is it overlaid on the contiguous US in the proper scale. <image>
I see you also went to thetruesize.com
broken link
I genuinely thought this until I was 13 or 14, I don't live in the US though.
I think some people genuinely thought this until 13 or 14 seconds ago, so donāt feel bad.
Anything we're taught or think as kids is true to us until proven otherwise.

Honest question, no offense but, how did you explain the one, long, incredibly straight coastline to yourself?
I did not lol I was not a smart kid I was in middle school and when I was 6 I thought the United States was the whole globe not one country š.
There are plenty of adults who still think that, so don't be too hard on yourself.
I like you š

An island with a perfectly straight eastern coast?
If those Alaskan kids could read, they'd be very disappointed in you.
My wife works with some other nurses that think Alaska is between the continental US and Hawaii.
Nurses aren't know for their intellect, so that's unsurprising

Some radio personalities were talking about this last week, coincidence?
The radio personality (TJ) is 47 and thought Alaska was an island south west of California. She blamed it on her Nebraska education.
Thatās the one!
As a child who asked for a globe at 5, not all kids are this stupid.
Thatās fair depending on how old you were when you learned otherwise
Did you think Alaska was off the coast of Arizona, too?
I just thought it was an island in the ocean near the states lol.
I used to think Chicago was a state because of how much they talked about it on the news.
my mother thought this until I corrected her in her 40s. a lot of people have this misconception, especially in childhood.
I never thought it was an island but there was no convincing me that it was bigger than Texas. If all the other states were true to size, why would I understand that Alaska and Hawaii were not?
Aside, but I thought thunder got louder the farther north you drove. I thought storms sat over the earth.
I also thought it was a small state thanks to map presentation
Think how expensive Alaskan beachfront property would beā¦
Hey itās cool, my aunt thought this until she was in her mid 30s
Get a world map. Ask her to point to Central America.
Interesting. I think thatās the reason this girl in HS didnāt know where Canada was
It's between Alaska and the 48 continuous states. LOL.
We told her that and she said so itās next to Mexico? And then someone hinted itās north cause itās so cold there, her response, but Mexico is south.

We really love those short flights to Texas when itās cold out and we need a little heat up north.
Bro thatās so weird, I just discovered this same site 30 minutes ago and itās already in my Reddit feed.
I thought Chicago was a state
Were you high in class?
Lol I was a child with strict parents so no lots of kids are just dumb š
I knew a girl applying to college who was going to go to Hawaii because it was an island but āstill so close to the USā. Surprised she could get in anywhere.
An island floating above mexico ?
No, silly. That was Old Mexico. It moved to New Mexico's place on the map.
If no one ever taught you differently then you were just using the info available
Yeah, pretty dumb
Sadly, there are also Teachers that think this
You are very american
If they said that they thought this was a World map it would have been even better.
sssshh, dont tell them it isnt
This seems like an exstemely reasonable assumption to makeĀ
I just had a conversation about this with my Filipina wife. Hilarious. š
Me too. I think most kids do. It's a dumb way to present it. I think a good spin around a globe is much more educational and accurate.
UK here. When I was a child I thought that Nuneaton was the capital of Hungary.
My mother stated a few years ago that Alaska was south of Hawaii off the Mexican coast because that's where it is on most maps. She also believed Alaska was too small to be shown at scale on the map so it is in a zoomed-in box.
It was shocking.
āObviously the blue part here is landā
Nilesy?

Totally thought the same thing when I was young
My wife insisted Alaska was an island at 33 until I showed her a map. We're Americans too.
Not just kids, I reckon every American.
When I was a kid I never heard of optical zoom so when zooming in I thought you would always loose resolution in pictures
