There is a lot of focus on the billionaire subsidy of the stadium and rightfully so.
But the under talked topic is what will happen when the Chiefs stadium is completed. They will sell PSL to buy the season tickets to help fund their portion of the stadium. Those could be thousands of dollars per seat. Some folks will hold on but it will cause many to throw in the towel.
So what we know: - the stadium is getting smaller by 10,000 seats = more competition for tickets and higher pieces. Some people will literally just be squeezed out for lack of seats. - most new NFL stadiums significantly change the mix of seats. Instead of 90% being standard seats, expect 30-40% to be some form of club seats (Atlanta Minnesota Vegas LA Dallas have all done this). These will be way more expensive (in MN for instance lower bowl club seats have per ticket costs over 500 for face value before they hit secondary market and sell for thousands). The sales teams at the chiefs will push these tickets to corporations knowing most normal people won’t buy them. - almost all seats will come with PSL’s which will squeeze families and mix shift the fanbase towards richer people
The takeaway for me: the stadium is getting quieter and more corporate. The one solace is that KC isn’t NY / LA / DC / SF from a money perspective and won’t go full corporate. It will be a little better than those and have some common fans left. But it will get more corporate.
The new stadium will likely sound nothing like Arrowhead.
Ya besides losing arrowhead, this move will make it harder for most fans to go to the games. Tickets are already very expensive and its going to get much worse.
It doesn't matter which side of the state line you live on, youre probably a loser in this move unless your last name is Hunt.

Jackson county will lose tax revenue and we (KCMO) will pay for that shortfall eventually. So will Kansas because there is no such thing as a free lunch and the STAR bonds are going to fail—just like every subsidized stadium project before it. Clark ain’t paying for the billions in infrastructure needed to support it, for renovations, or for the inevitable ballooning construction costs.

And they still get most of the tourism money without having to invest for it. It will take decades for all the hotels and other businesses to shift closer to the stadium.
There are preexisting hotels in the Legends. (Is the Great Wolf Lodge still there?). There is also the possibility one might get included in the building program.

I think everybody needs to think logically here.
1) the stadium is moving miles away and will be infinitely easier to get in and out of, while also much nicer.
2) stop comparing PSLs in LA and Atlanta to KC. A better comp is Buffalo where PSLs were as low as $750 while also reducing stadium capacity by 10k or so. If you truly want to maintain your season tickets, the PSL will not be a deterrent (particularly with the secondary market)
3) the stadium will sell out regardless. People will not “stop going to games”. YOU may stop going to games but the stadium will be full of people every Sunday, long after Mahomes is gone. The NFL is insanely popular and only getting moreso by the year.
4) everybody bitching about ownership…what did you expect them to do? Arrowhead is a relic and very outdated. It’s a beast in terms of traffic with no infrastructure surrounding it. Plus it’s open-air in a cold weather climate which vastly reduces its usage most of the year. If I owned the chiefs, I would have made a similar decision. Move the stadium a negligee distance away, move where it made most financial sense, make it a dome, charge PSLs.

Tailgating culture is also going to take a hit. If they are trying to pay for this by taxes on the entertainment district, they are going to push people into the restaurants and shops. There’s no way they will be able to replicate arrowheads cultures and get their moneys worth. And money always wins.

Mahomes first season starting I had $200 total Bud Light passes in the 300s for all 8 home games. Now unless it’s freezing (or like no with no Mahomes) you can’t find anything under $200 for one game up high. Now with less seats and no colder games, they won’t ever go down if they are half competitive.

Not to mention the preparation advantage for cold, road games in the playoffs. I did a little online research using ChatGPT, and teams with domes/roofs make about the same percentage of playoff appearances as their percentage of teams, but win about half as many conference championships as you would expect. And when I dug a little deeper, I found that they won the same percentage you'd expect of home conference championships - the difference was 100% explained by road losses. Playing in dome/roofed stadium makes your players soft, and they fold in road games against cold weather teams. Once we're a dome/roof team, forget about another 2023 underdog Super Bowl victory run...

Arrowhead is one of the last stadiums built in a stadium architectural style that magnifies the noise, but it’s not compliant with either the ADA or some other safety/accessibility standard that’s been established since the 1970s.
There’s levels to it (sunken field, enclosed field, concrete bowl, fans having unobstructed sight lines) but the one they can’t replicate is how steep the seating is.
They also can’t have the seats as close to the player benches as they are today per nfl rules.

Yeah this happened to my folks when the 49ers moved from Candlestick to Levi’s Stadium. I lived in a split home growing up; Mom is from the bay area and a huge 49ers fan and my Dad is from KC and moved to CA after college for work. They ended up getting 49ers season tickets from 1979 all the way until the end of Candlestick. When the time came to buy season tickets, my parents had an opportunity to keep comparable seats but the PSL was $12,000 per ticket on top of the season ticket cost. Unfortunately that was the end of season tickets. We know at least a dozen of other die hard 49ers fans that had tickets for 30 years walk away as well.

I hope this doesn’t happen, but the writing is on the wall. It sucks when the lower bowl is filled with corporate fans who sit on their hands. You see this in Toronto, where although they have rabid fans, only the suits are in the lower bowl and are more interested in being seen than watching and cheering on the team.
Arrowhead is an amazing experience. I hope most of what makes it great will move on too.
In all fairness what “average fan” has been buying tickets to the lower bowl at Arrowhead the last 5 years? It’s been $250+ for upper level nosebleed seats.

We have lower bowl seats and I’d say we’re average. I’m a teacher (in Oklahoma, no less, where pay is abysmal) and my husband is blue collar, but we make our tickets a priority. It’s actually worked out well because if we can’t go, we can usually sell them for slightly more than face value. We’ve never made money on them by any means, but it makes it doable. I’m thinking the new stadium will not be an option for us (I’d love to be surprised!), so I guess we will cherish these next five years.

If I lived in Kansas City, I would probably go to way more games but spend less overall since it would be less of a “rare occasion” and more of an every week thing for me.

Slightly different location: growing up in Lincoln most fans seemed to be KC fans. Lincoln did have their share of Elway fans but since Lincoln has obvious focus on the Cornhuskers there was a lot of automatic following of the Chiefs when Will Shields and Neil Smith were in KC. I think the Husker-Buffalo rivalry also spilled over to disliking the Broncos. KC also has the advantage of being a much nearer location for a weekend trip.

Donovan commented that the STH survey results regarding PSLs was surprisingly positive. Bahahaha! Please show us the results! I was looking at the structure of the Bills new PSLs and the cheapest seat in the house will cost an extra $1000 for the licensing fee. Cheapest fee in the lower bowl is $8500.
The lower bowl end zones are the life blood of the stadium. I would venture to guess that the majority of the season ticket holders down there don't have an extra $10k laying around. We're going to lose some of the most loudest and die hard fans we have.
I'm not even against the new stadium but it will feel and sound nothing like what this fan base has built over the last 40 years.

Absolutely. If they don't try to grandfather people in at cheaper rates they are going to lose quite a bit of their most passionate fans. It's definitely worrisome.
There was another survey they did that I somehow got to take (not a STH here), and most of the survey was about seating pricing including PSL costs, along with location and type of stadium (open air, dome, etc.) It was a "choose best of these 5" sort of thing. Most of the PSL options they were giving for even the nosebleed sections were still in the multiple thousands per seat, with some of the more premium spots in the 10k+ per seat. So probably similar to Buffalo in that regard.
One thing it did ask towards the end was how the PSL could be paid off and whether there'd be financing on it based on how long to pay it off and such. Given that survey I doubt they're going to ask for all the PSL fees up front, and knowing how the financing would probably work, they'll want people to go that route to milk people more. Still going to be a sanitized atmosphere with any affordability for fans moving to the nosebleeds.
Right because this year or the past 2 years have been SUPER affordable for the "blue collar joe" to take his whole family for some affordable fun! You know how much I paid individually to go to the Eagles game this year? I had a friend with season tickets and he gave me a deal at $100 for my ticket in 332 that he could have sold for double that. $65 for parking and about $20 for some food, not including the discounted drink i got for the fans first sober driver deal. Multiply that x my family of 4 and for 1 game that I dont get 4 tickets from my friend but on the resale market and im in for over a grand. Season tickets for that same section? If im a long time ticket holder $1600 each. If I'm a new buyer $2000+ each. My family of 4 for regular season tickets is easily over $9k. Now granted that the team is cheeks you can get into Christmas day for $20 but that's because nobody wants to watch 3rd string ass.

Agreed. I remember in the 80s, Dad would take us to a game after church. Just walk up to the gate, buy 4 tickets, have money for food. Entire day ran maybe $60 or $80 bucks. Last game I saw in person was Bengals v Chiefs ('86) and Boomer Esaison going off.
NFL games aren't family friendly and haven't been in a long time. They have become a way for people to tell other people, "I worked and saved for 6 months to see my favorite team play!"
Western Auto used to give you free tickets if you bought a car battery. By Sunday morning, you didn't even need to buy anything. They would just give them away to offload them.
My buddy bought a new Dodge pickup in August of 85 and they gave him 2 season tickets. Section 106 I think, up about 8 rows from the field. He kept them for several years before they got too expensive.

Let’s be real ticket price is driven by the record. Last year you could barely get a ticket under $200 this year I went for $50. When we are winning everyone wants in when you’re losing tickets are still gonna be real available. People seem to forget those good ole days with cheap tickets didn’t involve any playoff games.

I agree with all your points but there is no need for it to get attention because obviously this was the #1 goal of the Hunts to move to Kansas and get a brand new stadium instead of refurbing Arrowhead. Less poors, more riches = more money for the owners. I’m fine with this. When I went to SoFi last year, the architecture, sight lines, and amenities were great. Plenty of food and drinks. No lines. Plenty of bathrooms. No lines. Don’t get me wrong. Considering the top 10% earners are the the top 50% spenders. I'm sure Clark Hunt is counting on only Rich people getting in to his "legacy."
He doesn’t need rich people. He wants rich companies on expense accounts. They open up the checkbooks / expense accounts in a way even a rich person won’t.
Here's the thing: The stadium will still be packed. The hunt family will get their money. This ain't nothing new in sports. Us fans will always be losing. Go Chiefs.
This just seems like the same bullsh#t that is happening to concerts. The prices have just skyrocketed way more than inflation.
Regular folks are being priced out. Call it the free market, but I think it sucks to basically force out a large portion of your fan base.
I had season tickets 1991-1994 and it was a much more noticeably blue collar/rowdy/fun crowd than whenever I lucked into tickets in recent years.
Oh well. Hunt got his wish.
Haha. When I look up concerts, if I see “T-Mobile Center”, I move on down the line. Nobody is worth spending 200+ a ticket to see.

Check out the interview with Mark Donovan on the day of the announcement. He says that the last 10 new stadiums built have instituted them and that the STH survey results were "surprisingly positive" in regards to PSLs. Lol what a joke. It's def happening!
Anecdotal, I know, but every STM I know shredded them in every survey over PSLs.
Exactly. If Clark and Donovan wanted to move for business reasons and want to do everything possible to ensure the long term financial strength of the organization then just come out and say it. I think people could accept it and move on.

Unfortunately, I caught Clark Hunt’s interview on Monday and he said they were undecided on PSLs. But realistically, everyone seems headed that way. It’s true that we don’t know for sure
This is my biggest gripe. All the border war stuff is r worded in my opinion. One state got to give the Chiefs unearned money for 75 years, now the other side gets the honor and privilege of giving the Hunts even more money they don't need.
But the actual effect of the Chiefs never being even a possibility of being a dynasty again sucks. Probably wouldn't have cared about that 20 years ago. But now we got a taste of what it can be like and it's sweet. Hopefully they make one more run while they still can.
