Yeah a key difference with many other jurisdictions is that we’ve only ever given one person life without the possibility of parole, and that was the Christchurch mosque shooter. Despite how despicable his crimes were, it was still a massive deal that the judge handed down that sentence and a cause of much discussion within the legal community too because it had never been done before (common refrain: if not for that, then when?).
But as other replies said, eligibility for parole doesn’t mean automatic release, there are many prisoners going to their yearly parole hearings and getting turned down even though they’re “eligible”.
They dont automatically let them out at 17 years now. She's got to actually show remorse. But our system will automatically allow her to appeal her sentence. Her lawyer will keep trying to play mental illness
Rid the world of a sick violent person beyond redemption instead of have tax dollars keep her around for a couple decades. Not every crime deserves death penalty, far from it. But for crimes like this? Life in prison won’t rehabilitate her or provide any further justice.
Which, on its face is both presently true and ridiculous. Fly this kind of monster to Antarctica and leave her there. Problem solved, money saved, morality in tact.
Or, if we don’t want to fly that far, just drop 25 miles off shore into the ocean. Even cheaper.
Why don’t you build ThunderDome and then broadcast those with “the sentence” fighting each other on PPV. Winner gets a one year reprieve, after which the gotta fight again.
Problem with the death penalty is that you’ll kill the guilty but you’ll also kill the innocent, just a question of how many innocent people will be killed
there's laws in place to keep us from reverting to primitive cavemen. what youre suggesting is barbaric. And also we all know you wouldnt do a damn thing to her even if she was 5 feet in front of you lil pup.
I must admit, I too thought like you, had to google this and apparently it is in fact, more expensive to legally terminate someone's life than to keep them alive, even factoring in healthcare and security
I thought it was the woman who murdered the two kids under her care and cops smelled decomposition during a traffic stop and found their bodies (that video was chilling). I can’t believe more than one mother out there can actually do something like this, not just once, but twice.
Unfortunately that's not even the only one in NZ recently. We had a mother murder her three young daughters in 2020 (she was convicted). Aside from infanticide, we have a shocking record of child abuse.
Because parole requires convincing the parole board that you won’t reoffend and that you show remorse. The default is staying in prison, you have to convince the board to let you out, and even when you’re out you’re under parole supervision for life.
We also have a sentence called “preventative detention” which is basically “you’re locked up until we decide otherwise” but this is reserved for recidivist criminals like serial killers or serial rapists.
Yep reading article she killed the kids after her husband that she relied upon died and the kids were a reminder of the life they used to have together. Notwithstanding this, the kids’ murder was cold, planned and calculated. Seems her mind is very twisted.
They’ll put her out on parole in a few years unfortunately
Edit: downvoted to oblivion for pointing out injustice in the legal system apparently. She deserves life in prison and is eligible to leave in less than 20 years.
Other comments have explained that parole is granted in New Zealand much less frequently than people seem to think. Just because you're up for parole doesn't mean you're getting released.
Please remember to abide by the rules.

No depravity is too low for humans
Don't worry, she'll pump out a few more somehow...
What a monster
I dunno, I don't feel like she should be eligible for parole. Maybe that's a NZ law, but it sucks
Being eligible for parole and actually getting parole are two very different things.

All because she is eligible doesn't mean she will get out and find it unlikely she will get out.
What show is this from?
SNL - Last Call with Dave Chappelle
No clue to be honest…
Thanks bud
If you don’t need anything, I’m here
Funny
Could be the only show Kenan’s been on for 20 years
That's horrible, JESUSS!!
The kids were in the storage unit for 4 years, not months. They were only discovered when she stopped paying the bill and the unit was auctioned off.
Cursed storage wars episode
Months are in years
Imagine how traumatizing it was for the couple who found the children. No one expects to find something like that.
YUP….NOPE
A very interesting episode of storage wars.
That'll be 50 $
Pay the lady!
She should have gotten THE sentence. Life in prison won't do anything.
The death penalty does not exist in New Zealand.
What would THE sentence do?

It's more expensive to execute someone than keep them in prison for life, so if you're concerned about the cost, you should want them in prison.

No. It's not the method itself that is the expensive part.
Problem with the death penalty is that you’ll kill the guilty but you’ll also kill the innocent, just a question of how many innocent people will be killed
I don't think you know how this works.
Ok. What am I missing?
there's laws in place to keep us from reverting to primitive cavemen. what youre suggesting is barbaric. And also we all know you wouldnt do a damn thing to her even if she was 5 feet in front of you lil pup.
Really? I didn't know that. I would think the decades of meals alone would make it more expensive.
The legal process is the expensive part.
And no, you don't want to skip that.
I must admit, I too thought like you, had to google this and apparently it is in fact, more expensive to legally terminate someone's life than to keep them alive, even factoring in healthcare and security
What she did was horrible. And the poor people who bought unit and took the suitcases home! They’ll never forget that

That’s horrifying, we really live with very cruel human beings around us.
Hate to break it to you, but it's gonna be more than twice.
Have any weekend plans we should know about?
Thanksgiving with family. Does that make motive more likely or less likely?
Oh I know, but it’s hard to realize that fact, at least for me.
how can they possibly call it "life in prison" if she can get out in 17 years? life in prison should be exactly that.
Because parole requires convincing the parole board that you won’t reoffend and that you show remorse. The default is staying in prison, you have to convince the board to let you out, and even when you’re out you’re under parole supervision for life.
It was actually 22 years, but the judge felt pity for her adjusting in jail and cut it to 17
the poor woman. just let her out now.

According to the article, she needs
Unfortunately that is a life sentence in NZ.
We also have a sentence called “preventative detention” which is basically “you’re locked up until we decide otherwise” but this is reserved for recidivist criminals like serial killers or serial rapists.
Same here in Canada.
Thank you, I now know a little more about the legal system in NZ.
This lady looks mentally ill. I can’t imagine how she will be traumatized by her memories when/if she ever gets well
Yep reading article she killed the kids after her husband that she relied upon died and the kids were a reminder of the life they used to have together. Notwithstanding this, the kids’ murder was cold, planned and calculated. Seems her mind is very twisted.

You're getting downvoted to hell but you're not wrong. =/ Have my upvote. The (in)justice system is a joke.

Minimum jail time is 17 years before parole
Part of her sentence should be served in one of those suitcases!
Lex talionis would make our justice system worse than it already is. I understand your sentiment, but it is morally wrong.
Yeah, probably would have been more appropriate on r/VengeanceServed
Justice served.
Thats no mom, thats a monster
