I just figured it was because American society is in such disarray that nobody can ignore it any longer. When you see "political" stuff, such as protesting US imperialism, bleed into various unrelated subreddits, it's likely because life is serious and the people have had enough.

The Internet is one of the few places people can escape reality for a bit, but when you introduce reality into every single escape it's not an escape anymore it's a mirror. If the escapes become too real people will just seek out other worse means like drugs or even worse death. This sounds like bullshit but it happens all the time.
