And he conceded, and she was so happy about it. It probably was true that the light didn't help her sleep. And everybody was happy. Sometimes life is better when everybody concedes a little bit, mainly in things that don't matter that much.
You can be technically correct and still help someone anyway. He was technically correct, cops came over and checked and everything, yet he still decided to help.
The wellbeing of those around you is priority. I wish folks stopped getting so political and stopped caring about the idiots in charge and just focused on those around them, a bit of unity can change the world.
I was shopping for groceries with my niece one time, and this guy in line had piercings and tattoos. I personally didn't like it, but it is not my body.
This old lady in line started commenting about the guys piercings and tattoos, making such a fuss about how they were stupid for doing it and such. Then my niece told the old lady that it was their body, their choice, and if she didn't like that, then get over it.
She was 6 at the time, and the old lady asked if I was going to do anything about what she said. So I told the old lady that she was right, my niece deserved to learn something. So I gave my niece $50 for being kind, and the old lady lost it.
She started to say something about how she was being raised wrong, when I told the old lady to shut her mouth and move the fuck on with her life. The old lady paid for her groceries and walked away, muttering under her breath.
The guy with the piercings and tattoos thanked my niece for her kind words, and offered to get her something as a thank you. She refused saying it was something everyone should do, as love makes everybody smile.
The amount of things your kid will teach you is staggering, and remember not everyone had great examples growing up.
My parents beat the shit out of me constantly. In a way, by my refusing to use physical discipline with my girls I could say that they have taught me that parenting with kindness works. That the anger, the yelling, the constant anxiety and the frequent violence I endured were never ever needed, and there was nothing that I could have done that would ever deserve what I went through.
Every single person that has a child should be ready to learn from them honestly. It's healthy to have growth in both parent and child.
This is it right here. We leave getting our hair cut and go to the park and within a few minutes he tells me he needs to pee, while frustrated remain calm and we find somewhere to use the bathroom. Talking to him about not having to wait till he really needs to pee and then looking inward tell him I made a mistake too and could have asked before we left. They need to know you're not infallible either and are still learning, talk to them and let them reason and sort out solutions on their own as well.
After many years of competition, fights even, dealing with bad people, at work we now how between our colleagues this rule, not written, but deeply respected:
"Whenever someone asks for help, stop all you are doing no matter how important it is and go and help!"
Just this "little" thing changed absolutely everything!
Without compassion, we are voided of humanity, being right is not always enough.
I have pretty radical politics and everything happening has made me so angry, it makes me hate people sometimes. My friend, who holds the same belief as me, told me last week to remember:
Be kind to the individual and ruthless to the system
Yep. Even if others believe different things to you about politics or whatever, it doesn't make them fundamentally evil. Most of them are still just normal ass people who shop and live with you and share the same space as you and are likely agreeable on almost every topic.
I used to work with a Muslim man during the height of middle Eastern hate. He prayed every day, and had a small Quran in his pocket. He also translated the pages he read to me and I was stunned to realise he just read the bits that were about peace and joy. I asked him once about why there's bad people who believe in the same religion and he said "they just believe in the wrong bits". He shaped a lot of my outlook on others.
I wish people got more chances to sit and interact with others who don't identify the same as them. They would truly find so much common ground.
Very much doubt this story if the Muslim man told you he only read the the goods bits and others believed in the wrong bits. Why would anyone believe in a book with wrong bits in the first place? As a muslim man myself I'd implore you to actually read the Quran for yourself and stop making up stories about muslims.
And I dont really give a fuck about your made up stories. Only responded to you so others don't believe in your lies without pushback. There's no bad bits in the Quran. No Muslim would say otherwise.
Maybe he just phrased it badly. But I could absolutely say a similar thing about some fellow Christians: They put a lot of emphasis on the "wrong bits" and very little emphasis on the "good bits", if not outright dismissal (e.g. "Feed the hungry? Absolutely not! Those layabouts should just get a job!")
I get where you're coming from but there arent any bad bits in the Quran. You're literally not allowed to do anything that has been done by those so called jihadist. Self defense is permitted but it says nothing about being violent in any other way. People who dislike Islam will obviously lie/take things out of context. So I'm just saying no Muslim would ever say there were implicitly bad bits in the Quran. So his example looks made up to me.
Also those Christians aren't following their Bible as it literally states to feed the hungry. Thats not them following bad bits. Its just them being bad Christians.
Well said. I see so many posts/comments about how we don't have to do this or that, but just because you don't have to doesn't mean that you can't. He would have been "right" to say I can do what I want with my lights, but being right doesn't make you a better human. Do the small kindnesses that you can for people, it makes the world a better place.
And here’s the thing about the lights and her sleep— maybe the cops did come, and maybe the lights weren’t actually shining in her window. But maybe the old neighbors DID have some sort of light that shone in, or maybe that was something that happened when she lived somewhere else. And maybe she IS losing sleep now because of the anxiety and worry of the lights maybe keeping her awake, which now… is keeping her awake. So if it doesn’t hurt you, sure, turn them off at 10 and help her have a little peace of mind.
Given her age, she'll probably go long before him, and I guarantee he'll be at her funeral, maybe even carry her to her final home. He's a good man, and I want him for my neighbor, too.
Yeah, I guess it is. My mom and a best friend died last month so I'm still in this weirdly morbid state. I just thought that he'd be such a fantastic person for someone elderly and lonely to have with them in their final days. Sorry about that.
Sorry to hear that, it sucks to lose a family member. Holidays don’t hit right for sure. If you need to talk or anything reach out. Lost both my parents so can relate. DM if you need.
That's a real genuinely wonderful human being right there. Kept calm, stayed kind, opened up his heart to her. We need more people in the world like this.
Saw this video a few years ago and it’s always stuck with me. She’s so quick to apologize when she’s found out lol. I hope that man realizes what he’s taught some of us. Patience and kindness go so far.
Keep being you. This is what the world needs. Our government and bad apples try to make us hate or be at each other at all times. Keep being what the world needs.
I love this so much.
This is what I think people miss when they post on some of these AITA subreddits. Sure, the guy is technically in the right. He wouldn’t have been downvoted if he had turned the lights even higher. Or done some other petty shit because the law is on his side, and the request was not ‘justified’.
But these are the opportunities for connection and humanity that were missing when we’re always fighting to never let anyone get one over on us.
I don't like that he frames it like that. I think the light is actually bothering her. i don't understand why a cop would say the light isn't shining in her window, I honestly think ethier that's made up. Or the cop just made that call from outside the house. She asked politely and kindly the only answer should have been I'll turn them off at 10 a clock.
I just don't see why the rest even matters. Neighbor asks me to shut a light off at night I would just do it. Unless I'm using it in that case the compromise of 10 makes sense. Otherwise you're just kind of being a dick, for no reason. Something is clearly bothering her, if she's coming all the way over to knock on the door.
Why does he assume she's just doing this because she's lonely. I mean she probably is lonely and she probably does appreciate the invitation, but it's probably not that. A lot of old people are lonely. That's no reason not to shut the light off.
Can anyone give me reason not to just shut the light off? The fact that it's gotten to the point, she called the cops. Also that she's willing to knock on his door, to ask him to turn them off. Makes me think she asked once he refused she called the cops, the cops did nothing. So she asked again he still gave her shit for it called her lonely implied this is because she's bitter. That sucks, sure the invitation was nice but why not just turn the dam light off? She's holding her head apologizing like wtf did I do wrong here? Why is this person being so difficult?
Can anyone give me reason not to just shut the light off?
because the law came around and stated it was perfectly fine. no one needs more reasoning.
Unless I'm using it in that case the compromise of 10 makes sense
which he said he'd do. yeah he sounds a little frustrated, you would be too if you kept getting harassed for an issue that was legally deemed not an issue
called her lonely implied this is because she's bitter
he, imo, rightfully read the situation. it isnt uncommon for elderly to make up a reason for human interaction. many have lost their family already and ARE lonely. thats a proven fact.
so he says 'hey instead of making up an issue, just come over if you want some company. i think you just need someone to talk to'. she doesnt deny it and in fact seems slightly remorseful .
"It's legal so it's ok" is a bad argument, you can absolutely be a dick legally. And you can hang lights on your own house that aren't directly shining into a neighbors house that still affects them.
I have rope lights outside and they're bright as fuck. If the fence wasn't high they'd 100% be annoying, even if legal. I see literally no reason to think she's making the story up.
He did right to compromise, but you've made up an entire story in your own head.
I find it weird that anyone leaves lights on they are not using and the excuse of "because I can and don't need reasoning" is selfish BS. Y'all are scared of your own shadows and keep forgetting you're the reason the light casts them.

An older video, but this guy has nothing but love in his heart and it’s inspiring. I hope they both are well and happy

My kid taught me that kindness is often more important than correctness.

Sometimes kids can teach adults too, or at least remind us of what’s really important
Maybe his kid can come teach it to you next.

Know what he doesnt have in his heart?... judgment. Go over there and sit with that man as he has nothing but wisdom to give.
Good man. Saw right to the heart of the matter, responded with care and love.
Talk about winning the neighbour lottery. On my best day I don't know if I'd do what he did. One to admire.
No I know you would help and be good person when the time comes.
Ah dude that’s the kind of faith I need in myself.

I’m sorry about your mom and best friend, I did not think your comment was weird at all.
Appreciating a nice person isn’t weird. I’m sorry about your mom, friend.

Why?
People forget half the time elderly complain it’s because they lonely and want social interaction lol
That was the most beautiful thing I've seen this week.
When someone says they want to be an “alpha male”, show them this.
Just say I am the Omega and your time here is finished.
the world needs more of this
I really want to take a bottle of wine and chill with my boy
That's a real genuinely wonderful human being right there. Kept calm, stayed kind, opened up his heart to her. We need more people in the world like this.
Just not enough of us loving each other these days. That's why the world is all messed up.
Every time I watch this I wonder if the lady is in the first stages of dementia.
She's displaying some signs of it
it felt like a conversation he's had before...

I always watch this anytime I see it. I love this guy. So empathetic and respectful.
I will never not upvote this!
OMG, where is he so I can hug him? He's amazing
Man, I wanna hang out with this guy on his deck and drink wine.
Don't know who he is, but he's welcome at my BBQ anytime.
Keep being you. This is what the world needs. Our government and bad apples try to make us hate or be at each other at all times. Keep being what the world needs.
omg reddit actually banned this bot account before i got a chance to report it, i must be living in a dream
Man I can’t deal with these wholesome feels right now.
The world needs this man... ❤️
Thank you for being a kind person to this elderly lady
I wonder if she ever went over there... I hope she did.
Bro, r/hopeposting wants to know your location. Thanks for this, I was having an awful day.

How does one do that?

That was lovely but lights in your window at night still suck.
But they weren’t in her window. Keep it on point bro
Maybe but neither of us were there.
The cops were
Okay okay I concede. No lights were shining in her room. He's definitely a good dude.

Low effort, bitter comment. And you want to complain about quality? Ha.
