someone brought their dog to work and i noticed it really liked butt bongos, so i started smacking the shit out of it's ass before slowly realizing what it might look like, so i hope no one saw.
They just seem to like it. It's not just dogs either. My cats are/were like this. Hell, one I smack her ass pretty hard and she just lunges at me. I'll pick her up and throw onto the couch and she runs up like "AGAIN!" If i don't do it, she'll hit my hand and I "yell" at her and throw her. Animals are weird.
Yeah, I vividly remember my (human) nephew having a blast getting pelted in the face with a yoga ball when he was 3 or 4. He'd take a big shot from it, stagger and laugh his ass off and ask for another shot.
They like it tempered to their side. I check my small dog to make sure she ain't goin nowhere with less force than my large dog. They seem to appreciates that about me
Smaller dogs will like it too, it's not heavy pats, it's light slaps on the right or left side of their back near their butt, basically at the top of their legs, you slap lightly, then scratch the spot to and they will now point their behind to you so you continue doing it.
You're not supposed to slap them as much that makes them lose balance tho, if you wanna play you can slap them and then shove their behind with your hand, sometimes I do this to make them fall over on the couch so they snuggle up on me while asking for more scratching.
Not instinctive but learned, grew up with two dogs and simply paying attention to their body language helps. Them pointing their behind towards you in a curved angle is an obvious sign of "continue doing that" and just putting your hand on that spot they will basically press them against your hand to intensify the petting.
Can't trust a hollow dog. Think caveman brain, big strong man make big strong chest bang noise. Sound mighty Unga boonga. Big, strong dog make big strong chest bang noise like big strong man. Thog now knows he hunt Mastodon with strong dog, not weak hollow dog.
I think it's the same urge as lovenzitting. Where you love something so much you want to eat/bite it due to emotional overstimulation of one emotion., in this case happyness/love. So to regulate the hormones your body releases other hormones that make you angry for a very brief time.
Same with my cat. He was a big, sturdy boy and he LOVED hardy cat-taps. If he wouldn't have been so happy about them I would've totally thought I was hurting him.
My dog will come up to me and expect this, if i pet her normally she will leave. I am the only one allowed to do the sturdiness test, and she wont let me pet her normally lol
My dog gets weirded out if I'm gentle petting her and going "Ohhh whos a good girl" in a soft voice. She'll get all nervous and start rolling over like she did something wrong. Looking at me like "Why are you doing this? Why is this happening?"
Meanwhile, every woman does the same thing and she loves it lol.
Yet if I slap her belly, pick her up, smother her, and she's like "Yeah, thats the shit.".
I think my brother and sister in law told me once that I’m the only person who does the sturdiness check on their dog and she loves it. But I still don’t check too hard, she’s only a lil lady.
Oh damn... I dont even remember where I read it from but it was so engraved in my brain as factual information that I didnt even think about it. My bad
I mean there was some research done by some guy with Doctor in his name, so you know he's gotta be smart, and since it was about dogs you know everyone got ass-blasted by it in the news.
I don't have any skin in the game to formulate an opinion on whether dogs like to be hugged, but yeah, I'm just going to keep rambling off over here like a bad youtuber.
Yeah my dog will sidle up to my side and paw and cry at me until she gets her cuddles.
It's just important to realise they're not objects and they may just want to be left alone at times. However if they initiate or encourage then go ahead.
Yup, I've had 7 dogs in my life and 2 of them were asking for hugs and hugging back.
One of them used to sit and put his paws on my shoulders for me to hug him.
My current dog lays down and wants to be squeezed. She asks for it, lays down waiting for me to dogpile on her.
Every dog is different, even when it comes to kisses, my dog brings her face to mine to get kisses
As someone who works at a dog daycare, they absolutely love getting hugs. Even dogs I just meet for the first time will sometimes just walk up to me and put their head in my chest, I give them a hug and their tails just go crazy. Obviously not every dog is like this but a ton that I meet do
My dog actively hugs me. Like will block the hallway, paws on my chest until I embrace him, then he goes on his way. Golden doodles have some big personalities.
I pee over the areas my dog pees on during our walks to show total and complete dominating affection that warms both our hearts and the concrete or patches of grass by the sidewalk. /s
That’s because the butt (specifically where the tail begins) has an incredible amount of nerve endings, which dogs can’t reach themselves.
Getting massaged there is pure bliss for them.
My friends dog wanted you to smack her ass as hard as possible. I was super uncomfortable with it at first but she would come over and turn and shake it at you until you spanked the fuck out of her.
Man that sounds really sexual when you say it out loud.
Yup my kitties love some booty slaps. Give them a rub or 2 down their spine and one or 2 lil booty slaps.... They just might roll over and ask for more
The only one? How?? I'm a woman, and everyone in my family and close circle does the big, heavy pats for big dogs. I thought it was illegal to not do.
My dog is a golden/mastiff/rottie, so she has the love of anyone and everyone, plus being sturdy AF. Any touch is good touch, and she'll beeline it for toddlers she knows will grab her all over (don't worry, always closely supervised for any sign of unease). Hugs, pats, scratches, thumpies, all good. Playing with her toes? Shaking her tail? Doing range of motion exercises for her hind legs? Sticking my hand in her mouth (usually disloding a piece of carrot trapped in her cheek)? Tail's wagging, and she's leaning into me.
How could I ever deny her drum drums on the tum tums?
Imagine a black lab, make her bigger than you expect, her fur a bit longer with a wave, and her snout a bit shorter. She's 14 now, so she has little white eyebrows and a frosty muzzle.
She's just the best dog. I swear the main reason friends come over is to hang out with her.
My AmStaff is 10 years old. Sturdy check at least 3x per day. He loves it. Favorite is sturdy check while we are playing with his rope. Keeps us both young :)
Yea my doby loves butt scratches which has turned into just really hard butt pats to the point I forget her sisters my brother has done like it at all and look at me with betrayal when I don't scratch them like they expected
Every good owner (pet parent) knows their pets limits!
I always play attack my dogs and even push the small one such that she rolls over. I know. What would hurt her and haven't ever done that intentionally!
She's getting gray now...I hope she feels the warmth of my love even on her last day <3
Friend of mine has a boxer, and he absolutely craves me giving him a good thumping pet. He'll come over to.me, and smash up against my side until I give him a good thumping pet on his side, then he'll lay down at my feet. The owners say I am his favorite person.
Male here. I have never had the urge to do that to my dog. I have seen other people do it, and it doesn't hurt the dog, but I have no idea what the purpose of it is either.
Dogs love their dog dads who do this, too. Dogs are able to endure some crazy shit, so this doesn't hurt them and they're getting a special dad-only vibe.
I guess its to see how rough you can get while playing with them later on. If they cant take a gentle pat.. don't even bother
If there is some significant resistance and barely any movement after you gave your best gentle smack.... be careful not to overexcite them.. you might be in danger XD

God dammit TODD HOWARD NOT MY DAMN DOG TOO!
That would be a Gastly discovery.
[deleted]
But why tho? I have had dogs my whole life. I have done this my whole life.... Why? They seem to like it.
I think you answered your own question there at the end there, bud
Same with butt bongos for (some) cats
r/catbongos
My dog loves butt bongos.
My dogs booty is the zoomies button
100%
Butt slaps=instant hallway racetrack
Yeah I've always done this with cats but never dogs. Maybe cause I've always had small dogs
someone brought their dog to work and i noticed it really liked butt bongos, so i started smacking the shit out of it's ass before slowly realizing what it might look like, so i hope no one saw.
no, do it while making intense eye contact with the coworker, establish dominance

I stopped just short of subscribing to that sub.... but that's a damn good sub
I've owned cats for 45 years and I never knew this was a thing.
I've got 5 cats now... Wish me luck I find one who enjoys it.
Please keep us posted!
The quest for bongos begins!
lol, as a kid I was just like that.
Yeah, I vividly remember my (human) nephew having a blast getting pelted in the face with a yoga ball when he was 3 or 4. He'd take a big shot from it, stagger and laugh his ass off and ask for another shot.
Do they? I don't know about bigger dogs, but smaller dogs don't seem to like very heavy pats, maybe because it's comparatively heavier for them.
They like it tempered to their side. I check my small dog to make sure she ain't goin nowhere with less force than my large dog. They seem to appreciates that about me
Is that all they appreciates about ya?
Let's take about five to 10% off'er over there, Nickras.
Your sisters hot! There, I said it!
runs away fatly
Smaller dogs will like it too, it's not heavy pats, it's light slaps on the right or left side of their back near their butt, basically at the top of their legs, you slap lightly, then scratch the spot to and they will now point their behind to you so you continue doing it.

It's crazy how this is instinctive to humans to know how to do.
Not instinctive but learned, grew up with two dogs and simply paying attention to their body language helps. Them pointing their behind towards you in a curved angle is an obvious sign of "continue doing that" and just putting your hand on that spot they will basically press them against your hand to intensify the petting.
Yeah maybe it is learned, it's exactly how I have always played with dogs throughout my life.
My cat also likes heavy pats
cuteness aggression
Can't trust a hollow dog. Think caveman brain, big strong man make big strong chest bang noise. Sound mighty Unga boonga. Big, strong dog make big strong chest bang noise like big strong man. Thog now knows he hunt Mastodon with strong dog, not weak hollow dog.
Dogs yearn to be played like bongos.
I think it's the same urge as lovenzitting. Where you love something so much you want to eat/bite it due to emotional overstimulation of one emotion., in this case happyness/love. So to regulate the hormones your body releases other hormones that make you angry for a very brief time.
PS this is still speculation if I'm not wrong.
Same reason I slap my wife’s ass.
sir I don't think you should be comparing your wife to dogs
Exactly. My wife never loved me as much as mr sparkles loved me.
Same with my cat. He was a big, sturdy boy and he LOVED hardy cat-taps. If he wouldn't have been so happy about them I would've totally thought I was hurting him.
cats get scarily into it when you slap their butts. like borderline "you need therapy, mittens"
My dog will come up to me and expect this, if i pet her normally she will leave. I am the only one allowed to do the sturdiness test, and she wont let me pet her normally lol
Same. I never felt more validated in my life than when she let her surgeon give her a quality sturdiness check at their first meet.
Mines will accept regular pets but if shes unimpressed with the firmness of the pets she starts head butting me
My dog gets weirded out if I'm gentle petting her and going "Ohhh whos a good girl" in a soft voice. She'll get all nervous and start rolling over like she did something wrong. Looking at me like "Why are you doing this? Why is this happening?"
Meanwhile, every woman does the same thing and she loves it lol.
Yet if I slap her belly, pick her up, smother her, and she's like "Yeah, thats the shit.".
lmao
I think my brother and sister in law told me once that I’m the only person who does the sturdiness check on their dog and she loves it. But I still don’t check too hard, she’s only a lil lady.
How else do you show affection?
Hug squeeze
Most dogs dont actually like being hugged btw. They mostly tolarete this for their owners, as they know its how they show affection
Saw some dog experts on YouTube.
They debunked this myth by the fact that some dogs seek out their owners for hugs.
Source: https://youtu.be/OfhXntNZY6E (1 minute in)
Oh damn... I dont even remember where I read it from but it was so engraved in my brain as factual information that I didnt even think about it. My bad
Hey man, you got some evidence to show that you were wrong and changed your opinion. Good on you.
Better than what you can say for most people
I mean there was some research done by some guy with Doctor in his name, so you know he's gotta be smart, and since it was about dogs you know everyone got ass-blasted by it in the news.

I don't have any skin in the game to formulate an opinion on whether dogs like to be hugged, but yeah, I'm just going to keep rambling off over here like a bad youtuber.
Wolves on the other hand…
Wolves hug 🤭
It's a common myth for sure. I was under that impression as well so I looked up experts on YouTube to confirm. Apparently, I'd been sold an untruth :)
I have a Labrador and she jumps on me when I sit on the couch so she can get her hug
Yeah my dog will sidle up to my side and paw and cry at me until she gets her cuddles.
It's just important to realise they're not objects and they may just want to be left alone at times. However if they initiate or encourage then go ahead.
When I hug my dog and squeeze him, he gives the same sound as when you get that ear scratch they haven’t been able to reach.

Have you ever interacted with a dog?
They literally will force themselves under your arm or in your lap if you pat another dog. They love it, and they get jealous about it.
Never had a dog that didn't at least seem to enjoy a hug/cuddling. I think it entirely depends on the trust level you have with that dog.
My dog actively hugs me. Like will block the hallway, paws on my chest until I embrace him, then he goes on his way. Golden doodles have some big personalities.
Pat Pat Yup. That's a good pup.
(Me every time I meet any dog.)
*showe* yup, she aint going anywhere!

I do this to my kids, but it gets me in trouble.
"smacks dog"
Yep, that ain't going anywhere.
This thing can fit so many sausages!
Got me belly laughing, son
moves for food
.. and without one single strap locking him in place. Stil ain’t going anywhere!
slap you can fit so much loyalty and unconditional love in this thing.
All my animals love the pats.
My sisters dog will specifically seek me out for the pats. Seems to enjoy it most when I pat her on the butt.
Totally right. Your sister loves it when I pat her on the butt, too.
She must be related to your mum
Almost certainly.
That’s because the butt (specifically where the tail begins) has an incredible amount of nerve endings, which dogs can’t reach themselves.
Getting massaged there is pure bliss for them.
Oh, so that's why one of my dogs absolutely freaks out (in a good way) when I scratch him there, good to know, haha
My friends dog wanted you to smack her ass as hard as possible. I was super uncomfortable with it at first but she would come over and turn and shake it at you until you spanked the fuck out of her.
Man that sounds really sexual when you say it out loud.
the tabby and ACD love being played like bongos, the parrot... not so much
Ancient Copper Dragon?
Albino Cambodian Dormouse?
Aluminum Clad Dongs?
r/catbongos
Yup my kitties love some booty slaps. Give them a rub or 2 down their spine and one or 2 lil booty slaps.... They just might roll over and ask for more
Especially on the booty.
My dog is 7 lbs and I still do this to him. Sturdy little fella all things considered.
That's a solid thud, sounds sturdy.
Yeah I totally do this. I’m the only one in my house that does this. And my dog loves it. lol
The only one? How?? I'm a woman, and everyone in my family and close circle does the big, heavy pats for big dogs. I thought it was illegal to not do.

Drum drums. That’s a good one. lol
This sounds like a magnificent mix.
Imagine a black lab, make her bigger than you expect, her fur a bit longer with a wave, and her snout a bit shorter. She's 14 now, so she has little white eyebrows and a frosty muzzle.
She's just the best dog. I swear the main reason friends come over is to hang out with her.
How many tons can your dog pull?
This is an important test. Does the dog fall away, or into you? Look at you mildly annoyed? That’s my favorite part!
Basically anything
Car? Hit it just to make sure it doesn't fall apart
Dough? Slap
Your leg hurts? Punch it just to make sure it hurts
Ass? Slap that ass only if you have permission
Percussive Maintenance
holyshit now that makes sense
“Yep, this baby’s not going anywh— Abelard! Come back! I have chicken!”
"yup. That's a well built dog."
My AmStaff is 10 years old. Sturdy check at least 3x per day. He loves it. Favorite is sturdy check while we are playing with his rope. Keeps us both young :)
My golden demands sturdy butt pats when I get home or she whimpers
Yea my doby loves butt scratches which has turned into just really hard butt pats to the point I forget her sisters my brother has done like it at all and look at me with betrayal when I don't scratch them like they expected
I am popular at the dog park for always passing these out. And then I say, "that's a good build quality."
My old boy would love when you smacked his chest between his front legs, he would lean into it
Stroking a dog like this is like kicking a car wheel when looking at it to buy it.
Muscle memory
Slaps side of dog: Yup, you can get sooo many bacon rashers in this baby!
Had to test my dog laying on me to be sure
https://preview.redd.it/alpxnintkw8g1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e171d85522d473c51554d5c680519e1598178945
A healthy dog makes a solid thwump sound when patted.
A mimic does not.
Its simple science.
*slaps hood of dog. You can fit so many treats in here
My dog LOVES being patted like this….he goes nuts for it. Looks at me when I stop like “wtf do you think you are doing?”
Every good owner (pet parent) knows their pets limits!
I always play attack my dogs and even push the small one such that she rolls over. I know. What would hurt her and haven't ever done that intentionally!
She's getting gray now...I hope she feels the warmth of my love even on her last day <3
"Male urge" Woah! My girlfriend likes to do this to her dogs, too. Does this mean she's actually a guy and I'm not attracted to women? Mind blown!
I do this too though. I generally aim more at the ham hock though
Kickin the tires baby doggo checks out
Doggo has never let me down
Good ol' 2013 Labrador. Built like a tank.
Proud sturdy tester for over 9 years.
When my dog lies down I go to town slapping his belly. He loves it and its building his core.
they love it!
You dont need to peal their fur off but theyre animals. They are rough. Also cows and horses. Smack em
Thats how I let my dog know that pat session was done. Smack smack. That'll do
I do this to my cats and they love it
I check my cat like this too. 🤷🏻♂️
Friend of mine has a boxer, and he absolutely craves me giving him a good thumping pet. He'll come over to.me, and smash up against my side until I give him a good thumping pet on his side, then he'll lay down at my feet. The owners say I am his favorite person.
Not only dogs, I do this to my kids too
Male here. I have never had the urge to do that to my dog. I have seen other people do it, and it doesn't hurt the dog, but I have no idea what the purpose of it is either.
Treat others as you want to be treated.
My GSD will come up to me and wait for the pats and if i stop he looks me in the eyes and start whining.
Same vibe as strapping something on the back of your pickup truck and saying “yep, that’s going nowhere”.
You can fit so many pets on this baby.
Dogs love their dog dads who do this, too. Dogs are able to endure some crazy shit, so this doesn't hurt them and they're getting a special dad-only vibe.
Yep, seems kinda sturdy.
Yup, that's not going anywhere...
Unless it sees a squirrel obvs
I call this "thumpable". This buddy has passed the test, much thump indeed.
It's just a high five for dogs
Where I live people literally say 'give the dug a clap' because that's what it sounds like
That’s a solid dog
That's a real sturdy dog bro. It's looks proud
I do this with my bunny lol
r/dogbongos
No, no, no. This is completely wrong. It’s three taps per rub, not this random number each time… 🤣
Yep. Solid pat to the side of the chest, to test for tone. It’s gotta be done to ensure you’ve got yourself a keeper.
smacks dog
You can fit so many "good boys" in this baby
it's to see how good of a boy he really is. mostly they're the best of boys ^^
Also horses and cars
https://preview.redd.it/k8lf8qzifz8g1.png?width=1024&format=png&auto=webp&s=c2e0a38753d382da9f622f24f7b5eff448f704ea
Si está macizo
My dogs are 13 lbs and 8 lbs, so I don't think either would survive such a test.
the test can be scaled to account for the overall mass of the subject. sturdiness has always been relative to size
Dogs love this. The Thing hates it. Easiest way to test if your buddy is still your buddy and not a shapeshifting alien menace.
Lol
I've got a small terrier and I'm doing this daily.
Shoulders, ass.
Just loves it.
Same with some pressure on the skull. Pushing his head.
Satisfying thump
We are not testing, we are simply reminding them of their strength. It's a pep talk.
I do this with my kids.
I feel like my dog, a husky mix, prefers to be pet like this
Those are called pats
I would do that with everything. Pretty sure dogs just tolerate it
I do this to all animals I pet, my cats love bongos. Sturdy boys.
It's not a "male urge" lol it's just human
I do that to all my street dogs. Important check for the boys!
/r/UpvotedBecauseDog
My dog unfortunately has exactly two reactions:
Look at your hand and scowl if there's no treat inside
Turn into a puddle of liquid and expose her belly for rubs
This bitch ain't sturdy at all 😭
Actually our vet recommended that we give the dog a firm pat occasionally.
They love it!
It’s like checking the firmness of a tomato in the store
It's the universal language of dude love, honestly. My dog just gives me that "again, please" look every time.
smacks roof of dog
I guess its to see how rough you can get while playing with them later on. If they cant take a gentle pat.. don't even bother
If there is some significant resistance and barely any movement after you gave your best gentle smack.... be careful not to overexcite them.. you might be in danger XD
My Corgi love this, but only when my girlfriend does it, she will just give me weird look if I do the check up
Hollow dog sound
I do the same with my boy cat, the girl cat I'm super gentle with. I'm gentle with him too but that's man's best friend pat
B I G P A T S
My friend has a Great Pyrenees and if you aren't smacking him a bit during pets he looks disappointed.
I do this with my cat and she loves it.
I hit him like this, he bites me a little harder than necessary, it's all good and we didn't misunderstand.
my dogs approved of that mostly when we do it after their daily walks
That dog is sturdy as fuck
Dad pat
Did to my sisters dog and it squealed like I’d just punched it.
Most dogs love this. Even my cat loves this.
Why?
Ask them.
I don't judge, I just comply.
Yup, my dog is small so gentle smacks but she absolutely loves it. Always activates play mode.
I like that they like it.
Sentient instrument
Its a primal thing.
