Just a reminder in case any fellow Canadians see this.
Around here you just want to help sea turtles if they're flipped onto their back like this. Don't actually encourage them to get back in the water. They only come to shore here when the water is too cold and they need a warm rock to heat up on, so if you see one on shore it's most likely by choice.
Usually they should find their way back out as soon as they're warmed up sufficiently. This one on its back is "probably not" situation.
Best case scenario if one doesn't turn back into the sea on its own it's going to become a museum specimen or used to test for parasites so that scientists can at least benefit from it.
Thanks for actually pointing that out. The big point there is yes, definitely help another animal friend in need, obviously, first and foremost. But after that particularly with turtles, you gotta let it do its thing. If we give the space to do its thing and it doesn’t make it, then we’re clear to start actually intervening (in this case, honoring it by making the most of its carcass- essentially using its dead body to help the ones after it live more freely!). Ive done field work in costa rica (with primates), BUT I had the opportunity to see a turtle nesting event. The locals were all cleared to come and take a limited amount of eggs, but had to show ID to do so. Others like me could come and spectate. But regardless of the eggs being taken or not, you wouldve gotten your ass beat by the whole town if you go and mess with the turtles during their nesting. The eggs were taken once the turtle was long gone. If someone had rushed it… I wouldnt want to be them. The turtles know what theyre doing. I mean shit, theyre more than likely older than you, and been doing this whole life and survival thing longer than you. And if something is actually wrong, and the turtle dies on the beach despite you giving it the ability to go back in, then all the more data to help out the next turtle to come by.
Yep! Mostly leatherback and green sea turtles, with some kemp's ridleys on the east coast and olive ridleys on the west coast.
They just come here to eat jellyfish and leave. The leatherbacks in our waters actually breed in the Caribbean (I think in Trinidad but don't quote me on that last part).
Mostly waves, they go up on the beach to lay eggs and they get really tired digging and on the way back to the water a wave can knock ‘em over and they’re too tired to fight it, they can also roll down a sand bank and flip over they aren’t very coordinated on land.
And finally tik tok influencers looking for updoots for doing a “good deed”.
I think he did it on his side so that he could more easily get his hands under for leverage. On the other side he probably made a little trench to help more gently roll the turtle. This is a guess

Will they turn around again given the time?

Hum… Idk man, not sure if you convinced me.
Wondering if it just caught by tide

Hell ya, I learned something new today... Thank you!
Oh thank you. I wasn't aware of this. Added to my knowledge . Thanks
Just to be clear, you're saying that they intentionally flip on their backs, and they have a way of flipping back over when they want to?
Can someone explain how a turtle like that flips onto its back?

Maybe the tide?

Im a straight guy but dude rescuing turtles is hot
You're one hot guy away from not being straight anymore.
That was not a thing a straight guy that loves turtles would say
it is if you are comfortable in your straightness
Spaghetti is straight too, until you get it hot.
naw, you only have to get it wet
What was the point of all that digging?

No point…
I'm so glad the engine on the boat wasn't on when the turtle decided to swim right for the prop.

The cut at 1:05 had me wondering if all Aussies look the same.
As an immigrant to Australia no they don’t…there’s at maximum 5 types of men and 6 types of women!
rumours of a 7th type of Woman, the prophesied One Sheila, have been overstated
