This is the piece I don't understand. CBS had an audience. What percentage of that audience do they think will stay when they completely change the bias?
Very few people under 40 are watching television news anymore. So there are essentially no new viewers to get, just an ever-shrinking population of older people who watch news.
But advertisers / network executives / shareholders demand audience growth, so how can you grow your audience if no young people are watching news?
The biggest pool of people watching news are right-wing conservatives. So you try to bring them in by bringing in conservative voices.
This predictably causes a backlash from your existing left-wing audience, but where are they going to go? Fox News?
It’s a cynical, short-sighted, lazy strategy. But hey, you’re a 60-something corporate executive in a dying industry, all you need to do is eke out a few more years before cashing out. Then you can write a memoir blaming TikTok for killing journalism.
I am 66 and don't watch TV news. People need to get a clue and read. And be particular about what you read. I am a Democrat but most of my reading is coming from former Repubs or Never Trumpers.
The goal isn’t to attract viewers, and the money lost is acceptable. The goal is to sanewash right wing bullshit (“even the liberals at CBS and CNN think we should lynch trans people and give billionaires more money”).

Her job isn't to make CBS the new fox news or find an audience or generate ratings. He job is to destroy CBS as a credible news source, the way Elon destroyed Twitter.
I've never bought into the concept that both sides of an issue needs to be explicitly stated in order for a piece to be fair and balanced. I think as long as you're presenting verifiable facts and/or you're not baselessly disparaging an opposing view or opinion, you're on pretty safe ground.
Some events/actions/ideas don't deserve the kind of attention offering a contrasting counterpoint. Sometimes things are either right or wrong period without debate. My go to example is the notion of throwing a bag of kittens in a river. Is there really another side to why doing that isn't abhorrent under any circumstances? Some things simply don't have 'another' side to it.
I believe the administration was offered a chance to comment, but never responded. Requiring a comment from the government essentially gives them a "kill switch." A journalist would know this.
Whoa, sounds like this Bari Weiss isn't much of a journalist. NYT should run an investigative story on which news organization first gave her national prominence to masquerade as one.
This will always remain the aspect that baffles me. She doesn't have that big of a reach, and she has NO relevant experience as a news producer or editor. None. If they were so interested in doing this, why not just quietly snag a Fox News executive and be fuckin subtle about the shift?
I really want the ghosts of the dead 60 Minutes reporters to haunt Bari Weiss: Mike Wallace, Ed Bradley, Morley Safer and Andy Rooney show up and just rip her constantly for being a hack who doesn’t know what she’s doing.
Sure Jan … we will never be able to see this report. I will not be renewing my Paramount Plus subscription when it comes up for renewal next month. This is BS
All for an audience they will never take from Fox News.

The theory at CNN when they did this was:

Ellison: "Audience? We don't need no stinkin audience!" Destroy independent journalism is the goal.

nah its to suppress the truth. fox news fits one role, CBS news fills dead air for its former audience
Just desserts.
Killed for political reasons reportedly. RIP 60 Minutes.
Well I nevah!
JFC, I take it Bari Weiss never watched The Insider.
Edit: The dummy said the story needs an interview with Stephen Miller - https://www.nytimes.com/2025/12/21/business/60-minutes-trump-bari-weiss.html

I agree, the fact that Steven Miller and his ilk implemented this plan, tells us all we need to know about "their" side.

Bari Weiss is so unqualified and stupid.

Useful idiots and the babysitters who steer them.
Nothing I say is going to top that tweet, so I will just acknowledge how FUBAR it all is
I’m sure they’ll air it “in two weeks”
The Bulwark published a newsletter this morning discussing CBS's purposeful centering of the abusers and ignoring of the victims. thebulwark.com/p/trump-and-co-cant-keep-their-lies-straight-epstein-files-bondie-doj-weiss-cecot-cbs?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email&utm_content=share&action=share&token=eyJ1c2VyX2lkIjoxMjMyOTk1NywicG9zdF9pZCI6MTgyMzI1OTA1LCJpYXQiOjE3NjY0MTQ2MjEsImV4cCI6MTc2OTAwNjYyMSwiaXNzIjoicHViLTg3MjgxIiwic3ViIjoicG9zdC1yZWFjdGlvbiJ9.hvjei_sfWSZOd1NXaW1GwKdMzJ5aXkiYbHLTmb3P2yc
Bari Weiss was given that job because she believes in nothing and will say whatever she is paid to say.
I really want the ghosts of the dead 60 Minutes reporters to haunt Bari Weiss: Mike Wallace, Ed Bradley, Morley Safer and Andy Rooney show up and just rip her constantly for being a hack who doesn’t know what she’s doing.

The right wing media is already capitalizing on the opportunity Bari gave them on a silver platter...

Her job is to be the mouthpiece of the Trump Administration at a major media entity. She's doing great at it!
Chicken shits.
