You were only allowed to own a certain number of stations nationwide. It started at 7, went up to 18, then ended with no more than 40 percent of population covered nationwide. It's how you end up with Sinclair and Nexstar owning more than 100 local stations each. .
John Dickerson is a class act and a fantastic journalist. His book about his mother, Nancy Dickerson, a trailblazing journalist herself, was wonderful. I'm eager to see what he does next.
Edit: I'm sure Maurice DuBois is fantastic, too! I just am not as familiar with him.
He was wasted on CBS the past year or two as they slipped further and further from news into gossip and entertainment trash eventually landing at MAGA light. Tony being promoted is the most hilarious and on brand CBS thing ever.
I'm always amazed by the sheer amount of knowledge of political history he has. Been a long time Gabfest listener and it's incredible how he's always ready with a quote from Teddy Roosevelt or an apt comparison between the current political moment and the election of 1876 or something.
I emailed him back in 2015 when he was doing the Whistlestop podcast saying he should do an episode on Perot's 1992 campaign and compare it to Trump. He emailed me back with "It's a great idea" and then a few weeks later he released a great episode on it.
Damn that is genuinely really cool, you contributed directly to journalistic history. Also, Colbert gave a heartfelt goodbye to him last night, was such a genuine gesture. The end of an era, indeed. Fuck CBS forever, have fun hosting your bizarre town halls that nobody will watch let alone report on.
I like Steve Hartman’s weekly Friday segment and I still like CBS Sunday Morning. But other than those shows and 60 Minutes, CBS’s news programs aren’t worth much.

The amount of damage to journalism and media Bari Weiss is being allowed to do is slowly nearing the numbers and ensuing effects normally reserved to authoritarians. I hope the writers of future history books don't shy away from that fact.
Telecommunications act of 1996 entering its final form.
Exactly!!!!
What’d it do?
Deregulation which lead to massive media consolidation, with large corporations buying smaller broadcasters.
How’d the letter of the law prevent it previously?

He's the epitome of a gentleman, as well.

Can confirm. He’s very sharp and a really nice guy too
lmao the Bari era is starting horribly
Other than 60 minutes they haven’t mattered for decades (post Dan Rather).
60 minutes was gutted last year. It’s all over.
Bari can rule over an empty and irrelevant club
Yep, the sad fact is, you could pull the plug on the whole shop except for 60 Minutes right now, and most of the country wouldn't notice or care.

Or SeeBS
By the time the Weiss Era ends… the damage will be done and irreparable.
Going out standing on ethics, now if the rest of CBS News is like this, it may force the Ellisons to change their tune
Doubtful. They'll start pulling from Newsmax and OANN as farm leagues
The fact that we're talking about those being the farm leagues for CBS News definitely shows this brand is going to be worthless in a year or so
The collapse will be epic. We dont need you cbs.

Bari's door is open, so it's fine
I hope Tony Dokoupil sat down with his family and watched John's last broadcast.
Tony Two-Cuts? Tony Double-Circ?
All the history of their news program…poof!
“Revamp” is a funny way to spell “coup”.

Also a terrible beer. The name is cursed.
