Peter Beinart has been making essentially the same analytical point for years: that parts of the American/European Right admire Israel because it models the kind of demographic, exclusionary nationalism they want at home.
Israel, after all, has exactly the kind of immigration policy that many European xenophobes want for their own countries: an immigration policy that welcomes members of the dominant group and keeps out pretty much everyone else. Moreover, if you’re a xenophobe who dislikes the Jews in your country because they dilute ethnic and religious purity, Israel offers them a place to go and be with their own kind. That’s one of the reasons Arthur Balfour embraced Zionism in 1917. He liked the idea of a Jewish homeland in Palestine in part because he wanted Eastern European Jews to go there and not to his country.
For Pompeo or Fuentes, that would be White Christians over everyone else.
For supporters of Israel, it would be Israeli Jews over everyone else.
Beinart contrasts this with groups like the ADL who oppose that model at home but defend it for Israel, creating a double standard that sees ethno-national hierarchy as acceptable only in one place (where it benefits the Zionist in-group).
So, IMO, the more significant issue isn’t simply 'bad guy got interviewed' (Piers has interviewed worse people like Daniella Weiss, who gets to actually live out her ethno-religious-supremacist fantasies).

I just watched that video you linked and the description of him as smug is perfect. I honestly think underneath he doesn't really care if either Jews or Muslims are being killed; he hates both. That's an excellent observation. Surprisingly (to me) Milo Yiannopoulos said something very similar on the Piers Morgan follow-up show today: that Fuentes is hollow at his core ("a chameleon") and doesn't truly believe in anything.
I just listened to it (at least the Milo segment) and I loathe to agree with him, but I do. I have rather low regard for Milo, but have to credit that he is intelligent. Fuentes is just bitter hate and trollishness.
