Hi everyone! This will be my first time renting a car in Japan and will be renting it during my visit to Northern Kyushu. I’m trying to rent a car from Budget Rent a Car Japan since there’s one near my accommodation. I noticed if i create an account and reserve a car on their Japanese site it is significantly cheaper but I am not sure if this is allowed.

Anyone here has done so before? Would love to get some insight into whether foreigners can rent from that website haha

  • It's cheaper yes, but with the japanese one you also only have basic insurance included and the chance is high that there is no english speaking person at the desk.

Go and pay a bit more, that'll include complete insurance, a translation service in case of accidents etc. With that the return is also easy because every slight damage is already covered.

This guy is right... But I have moved to always booking using the Japanese website. I've never had a problem. For clarity though, my travel insurance automatically includes the "excess" up to a certain amount, for a rental cars insurance. I double and triple check (and you should too). Don't use the Japanese website to rent a car, unless you understand what the insurance risks are, and you have other insurance (like travel insurance, or included in a platinum-style credit card).

  • We did a road trip of northern Kyushu last year and loved it! We booked online through Toyota Rent A Car and since the airport is so close to town we just spent three days in Fukuoka and then went back to the airport to pick up the car.

I definitely prefer Toyota’s website for ease of use - still not totally straightforward but the best we looked at.
