Which is not equivalent to XL in western countries though. XL in Japan is more like M-L in other countries, my comparison being EU size. Additionally, despite fitting in circumference, usually the length of sleeves and pants legs is shorter in Japanese clothes. So even if I (f, EU size M-L, 170cm) find pants or a pullover, often the sleeves and legs are a little too short.
There are some specialty shops, but in most stores the largest you'll see is XL/LL (same thing). You can search for them with the terms "big size" or "plus size".
A lot of Japanese brands don't use the letter X in their sizing, so you will see LL (which is similar to L in western brands) 3L and 4L. I've never seen 5L, but it might exist in some specialty shops. You can literally just search for clothing stores on google maps and get a lot more up to date and specific info than asking reddit.
I found some, along with some size 13 shoes but it took me an unimaginably long time. Really needed them too since I arrived with just a backpack and my shoes were just crocs lol. Check out places like Modeoff, they occasionally have some waiting in the shelves, especially the bigger sized ones are new with their tags still on them (B-ware probably). That's the only place I found any.
Yes, but only at Big and Tall stores, Japan has their own versions of this. Also, in Ryogoku where it is more common for Sumo to live. Thrift shopping? Haha....never. I did luck out and find a few things at the shopping area over next to Ueno.....obviously a tourist rich area, so they were somewhat prepared.
Probably somewhere but not worth the effort to find.
I am from Canada and wear L shirts. In Japan that translates to XL.
I find it hard to find anything decent.
Uniqlo would have it
I wasn't looking at clothes much but when I did I never saw anything bigger than an XL

Sakazenz, Shimamura, all have up to 7x, with good prices for us Clydesdales. Shoes over US10 are still a challenge.

No.
No - do not count on finding anything including shoes in sizes bigger than a US9 or 10.
I'm 3XL and went to Japan for the first time one year ago almost to the day.
I found one shirt and it was, at best, a "european" 2XL.
If you do find something big and tall in Japan (or if you find a sumo wrestler as ask where they shop), please post in this sub!

if a random person on a street offers big size cloth at their store, don't follow them.
