Hi all, since 2020 with the pandemic and moving to Dublin I have noticed that my hair is falling a lot. I haven’t lost density and I went to my GP and a dermatologist. I had some bloods test done and everything is fine, but my hair still falls. Just to give you an idea, I can’t leave my hair down because I would find hair all over my clothes and floors. I know it’s not a massive amount of hair falling but still, it’s quite uncomfortable when I go to work and I find my office chair full of my hair.

I do think I have cronic telogen effluvium, but doctors don’t seem worried or willing to keep investigating and it’s been 5 years like this.

Any tips/recommendations for this? Thanks so much.

  • Your hair is your crown so this affects your daily quality of life and confidence. That’s a valid enough reason to get the care you deserve. It’s a symptom of something and you deserve to know the cause so you can treat it accordingly and have peace of mind and keep more hair on your head. Five years is too long to be suffering. Advocate for yourself and push for a referral. I’d be asking to see an Endocrinologist so they can check things like thyroid or PCOS, long covid. A dietitian to review your diet and lifestyle. A dermatologist to come up with a treatment plan and make sure you have no scalp issues contributing to the issue. Ideally a trichologist too. Idk your age but if it’s Meno or peri menopause related the Endo. will pick this up. You’re not wasting any doctor’s time asking them to rule out other things (differential diagnosis) so you don’t worry and get some answers. They’d rather see you and say ‘oh it’s nothing’ or ‘it’s something we can figure out’; than not see you at all. Your GP is the gatekeeper of the referral but should be doing more to help after 5 years of this being unresolved. Bring someone to your appointment or ring or email in advance with what you want to discuss. Ask they document their refusal to help you in your notes and this usually lights a fire under their arse to help you. People go to A&E for a hangover or painkillers, you will not be wasting anyone’s time getting the care and treatment you need rest assured. These specialists can review your bloods as fine does not mean optimal. My GP said my levels were not of concern and fine for everything and when I saw an endocrinologist she was floored and disagreed. I have PCOS (took 12 years to get a diagnosis) and if I don’t actively manage my stress and make sure I’m eating enough nutrients and nourishing foods my hair literally falls out in clumps in the shower or on my brush. Monoxidil works wonders but put it on very sparingly (buy the mens as it’s identical but cheaper) and wear a bonnet to bed as it’s toxic to pets and you don’t want it migrating down your face and making that more hairy. Scalp massage and tapping has worked wonders for me. I have a scalp tool but your fingers gently tapping work wonders. As has acupuncture if you have the means for a short session. I take an omega supplement and eat pumpkin seeds for the zinc and because they help grow your hair and block the hair shedding. I use a hardcore anti dandruff shampoo and let it sit on my scalp to work for 5-10 mins before my shower twice a week (in a shower cap for less mess) as this helps your scalp health and the ingredients help your hair grow being anti fungal. I brush my hair backwards as in from the crown of my head to the front with my head titled down as a form of lymphatic drainage. It really helps stimulate the scalp and you’ll feel it getting warm after a minute it’s mad lol. Don’t let your hair dry naturally-use a heat protector and a blow dryer. Go to penneys and get the satin hair bobbins or hair ties that won’t snag your hair. Get a caffeine shampoo and alternate it with your anti dandruff shampoo. If by any chance you happen to have one of those fancy red light face masks put that on your scalp or see if they do a scalp accessory. Brush your hair gently, treat it lovingly and say out loud in the mirror “my hair grows so lusciously and quickly”. I swear positive affirmation is a form of energy and this helps as mad as it sounds. I follow dermatologist_adel a hair loss dermatologist on IG and find her content really helps too.

Good luck. You can get your hair back. This is treatable. Go forth and get on your hair journey for 2026!

  • Have you seen a trichologist? They specialise in hairloss

  • Western medicine cannot help you with this! You need fuctional medicine, more extensive bloods & the correct interpretation. If your blood work is reviewed by a gp, they will tell you it’s fine because those levels are within THEIR ranges. And in Ireland, those ranges are essentially created to detect serious illness only.
