Is there a test in the early stages to find out if you have a special needs child?

  • As you have added a pregnancy flare I’m assuming you mean in the early stages of pregnancy. Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) is available from around 10 weeks, the Harmony Test is one example but there are other brands also. They test for chromosomal abnormalities so things like Down syndrome, Edward syndrome, etc. Cost is €500/€600 and results can take a few days to a couple of weeks depending on where you have it done and where the lab they use is, I think the samples are generally sent abroad for testing.

But you can legally only get an abortion up to 12 weeks. So where does that leave woman who do the test at 10 weeks and have to wait for extra weeks?!

Gensys is a relatively new one (it wasn't available on my first pregnancies but was for this one). Their labs are in Ireland, you test at 10 weeks but the results should be back within 5 working days giving you the window you need to make a decision.

I will note just so you're clear, the 12 week mark doesn't include anything considered a fatal fetal abnormality, you can get a termination for that at any point in pregnancy. I believe the definition is any condition not considered survivable for more than a month after birth. You can check my comment history for why I know this.

After twelve weeks, you can't get a termination in Ireland but you can ask for a referral to the UK and have one there.

Do we not do FFA abortions after 12 weeks here in Ireland? Do people post 12 weeks get referred to the UK for abortion with an FFA?

I thought we had an exception in legislation for these cases.

No I meant that you are allowed them here in the case of FFA.

Ah ok sorry, I misunderstood you.

I'm not sure why you were downvoted for asking this perfectly reasonable question

Yes correct, it’s not ideal. But if the test comes back showing a chromosomal abnormality which is incompatible with life you can have an abortion after 12 weeks. I had mine done at 10+2 in ReproScan in Dundrum and had results within 7 days.

  • On Monday I got the Panorama test done at UMHL. I was 9w+1day. Cost €340, I should have the results within 1-2 weeks as they’re sent to the USA. But the nurse actually walked with me back to reception to deliver it to the courier collection point so they’re very efficient. It tests the following:

Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome) Trisomy 18 (Edwards syndrome) Trisomy 13 (Patau syndrome) Monosomy X (Turner syndrome) Sex chromosome trisomies (XXY, XXX, XYY) Triploidy 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (DiGeorge syndrome) — optional Five microdeletions panel — optional Fetal sex determination — optional

If you’re talking about neurodivergence then it cannot be tested for in pregnancy. It’s most commonly picked up by behavioural factors around 2-3 years of age

  • What type of special needs?

  • There’s tests for Downs. And then there’s tests for see if the prospective kid is viable. The earliest opportunity to get tested is better.

  • Sorry, I am a little confused sorry! I can only get tests while I'm pregnant to find out if my child is going have some disorders after the fact I can't abort?
