Hey, I’m new to fishing and new to Cork. Any advice on good places to start near the city centre? I’m looking for somewhere safe and beginner-friendly so I can get used to it first. I’ve heard people fish around the River Lee and Lough Park if so, where exactly are the spots people usually go?

  • I always recommend LRF sea fishing from piers as a good place to start.

Super light gear, super cheap tackle and usually lots of fish per session. They aren't huge but its a fun way to spend a day

I go with a drilled bullet over a foot of 6lb line and about a size 8 or 10 hook with a tiny piece of mackerel.

  • You can give area around UCC, mardyke , the Kingsley hotel and up the lee fields a shot . We would have fished around those spots years ago. Nice walks in any case , bonus if ya catch a trout or an eel for that matter .

thanks! any fishing setup you would recommend for beginner and where to get them?

Just use a ball weight ,( sliding weight with a hole), a lead shot to stop the weight from sliding . Size 10 hook , 1 worm. You can use with a float or use a worm with a small lead head hook and retrieve slowly. You can often see the fish swimming against the current . Take a walk and , take note if you get any bites. If having no luck Shoot up to the end of the path on the Lee fields and shoot over the fence to the first overgrown bend just opposite a grotto.
