Like the title says I’ve been dying to get into fishing for a while now but I have absolutely no experience and don’t know anyone with experience. What are some of the best resources for a complete novice such as myself? Where should I start?

  • Rod and line and bobber with worm and go to a lake in April.

  • Sennan Stanley fishing on YouTube it's where I got the most info starting out. he mainly focuses on Trout, Perch and Pike though

  • Where are you based? What type of fishing are you thinking about? Any particular species you would like to catch?

Answer any of those and we can help you on your way.

  • Get a 9ft spinning rod because it can do anything. Get a reel with multiple spools, load one with 30lb braid and another with straight 20lb mono. Learn your knots, you'll only need a few. Buy weights, lures and spinners and some terminal tackle like hooks, swivels and floats also get some smaller line for hook lengths. Get a landing net.

First thing first, I'd go chasing sea fish from the shore, mackerel and Pollock. After you have the hang of unhooking and gutting your fish, cooking etc I'd get booked onto a charter and they'll provide the gear, you just cover the cost of the gear you lose on the day. You'll cover the cost of the day in fish taken no bother. Buy a fish id manual so you know what you've caught.

Once the trout season opens up you'll be in good shape to get amongst the trout early season.

  • Depends on what fishing you wanna do! When I started out beach fishing as a kid, id go to the field with just a weight on the line and practised casting there.

  • Depends where youre based
