Dentist office told me my insurance is covered through them. Which it was with the original doctor that was helping me. They decided to switch me to a different doctor day of the procedure. Which turns out that doctor is not covered on my insurance. I mentioned to them many times will I be covered. Now they want to charge me almost $4000. What should I do?

  • What do you mean by "covered through them" and "not covered on my insurance"?

Do you mean that one doctor there is In Network, while the other doctor there is Out of Network?

Does your insurance allow you to only see an In Network provider? Or is the $4,000 the difference between the In Network payment and the Out of Network payment that they want you to be responsible for?

I work for a dental office and something sounds off here. Nonetheless, if what you are saying is true, the office should have told you that there would be a discrepancy in cost with the other provider before the work was done.

I mean my insurance was able to cover me with the original doctor. The original doctor was in my network but the second one wasnt. They told me many times Iw as covered even after they changed me to a different doctor.

My insurance is not covering nothing with the second doctor. They only covered the claim thats the original doctor did. Im responsible for the whole procedure at this point.

  • Is this a second doctor in the same practice, or did they send you to a totally different office? What was their response when you asked the office about the bill they sent?

Yes it was a second doctor in the same practice. I called them they told they will call me back on Tuesday with the person that handles it. When stuff like this happens it always ends up with me having to pay it.

When I have any procedure beyond a check up my dentist gives me a signed estimate for the total cost of the procedure and the anticipated coverage by my insurance. Did you get something similar?

I have never been to an office/practice where each dentist takes different insurance so my only advice is to collect all the paperwork provided and read it carefully. You might also be able to call your insurance to see what happened when the office submitted the bill.
