I tried to figure out if she died or survived the cancer but I couldn't find anything else on the girl. I hope she is ok, but after seeing some of her pictures, I'm not so sure...
Which is fun for me to say, given I have Ehlers-Danlos and I received one catch before getting crushed, dislocating both arms, and realizing that I’m not meant for contact sports
I grew up in a single A school. We had other small towns around us that came to our school and we did co op with another nearby school cause they only had 2 or 3 kids who wanted to play football. With those additional players I think we had 17 or 18 on our entire team lol
100+ is normal for college teams and many high school teams. It was nuts playing on a team with 120 players in college after coming from a small town with 42 on our varsity HS team.
Far as dressing out and traveling. Idk if HS teams have a limit. College will usually limit it to around 70 for away games, but can have 80 or more dressed out for home games.
How many will play at any given time. Why so many? I don’t know anything about sports. The first sport I have given any effort to was pickleball when I started playing this summer.
It’s totally up to the district you play in. My district capped team at (i think) 66 players per team. We played one school from another county that had over 200 dressed on the sideline and like 17 parents in the stands lol
Example my Highschool received extra funding cuz they had essentially 3 different campuses In one but we were designated as a bigger school for it. Our football team had 25ish kids on their team, one school we played had 70 kids
You have two sets of players, one for defensive line, one for offensive line. They do not play at the same time. Plus you have extra players for each line so they can rotate in case of/to prevent injuries.
11 players on the field at anytime, for Offense and Defense sides of the ball, plus Special Teams, and ideally each person only plays one position (maybe one side of the ball plus Special Team). So in an optimum world 33 at least, Any less and you are looking at too many injuries
In high school, one of our secondary coaches left to be the head coach at a rival school. That year, when we played his team, we demolished them.
This was a Varsity game. At half-time, our coach pulled ALL the varsity players and put in our JV team for the third quarter. Our JV team score multiple touchdowns on their varsity team, so coach pulled the JV players out in the 4th quarter and we fielded with nothing but our freshman team.
We still ended up two touchdowns away from the state record. If we had kept our varsity team in for the full (farce) game, we would have broken the state record, by a lot.
ETA: So that was three full teams on our side during that game.
That’s really as bad as it got. There’s other ones, but it’s up for debate whether there’s ones more abrasive/contentious than that.
I don’t know what I expected, but I expected much worse than that, and didn’t find any noteworthy depravity. Just standard depravity, not quite the depths of unwell minds.
This made me smile extra hard. I was diagnosed with Leukemia in late 2023, started treatment in Jan 2024 and went into remission later that year. Met a few other leukemia patients who had a rougher type than me. I felt fortunate.
I hope this girl is well!
I love that they refer to it as “honoring their comrade”. The whole thing is handled in a very respectful way without too much attention to her or in a way that feels overly pitying or anything like that that may have made her uncomfortable .
I thought it was the “deshi bashara” chant (as drum beats) from TDKR - thats what it sounds like to me which I thought was so sweet (if thats what it was lol)
(sounds a lot like the theme for Isengard as well after the second listen!)
I counted 54 players. From what I read from another comment, college and highschool teams don’t have a limit on the amount of players, but the limit is 53 for NFL teams.
Just because football players are big and strong doesn’t mean they’re all brutes. They have to be tough to be in that game sure, but they have just as much respect as anyone. I believe too many people think these guys are insensitive and emotionless. They’re humans like everyone else. Also, to be that strong physically, often takes a lot of emotional strength.
I love how (I’m guessing) it seems they told her to wear the red hair ribbon and then everyone else wore the white so she could be easily identified. What a sweet gesture this entire thing was.
Orange is the color of the leukemia awareness ribbon. Why they didn't hand it to her directly, not sure. Maybe they thought she'd be too emotional and would take too long accepting. It's a show of support though
Also it creates a bowing motion in the deliverer. It's a sign of reverence and humility. The symbolism of flowers goes way beyond just the color and type, delivery method is also important.
It’s a gesture of support. Cancer sucks - two of my friends are battling it. Knowing that the strongest kids at the school are there to support you definitely helps, as chemotherapy causes hair loss, which would be very difficult for a high school girl to grapple with.
I suppose I don’t understand why kids showing support for a peer who is battling cancer is hard to understand? It’s incredibly beneficial for cancer patients to know they have support from those around them. It makes everything easier when you know people are aware you have the illness and are supportive of you. If she loses her hair as an example she will be much more comfortable going to school knowing these people are around her.
This is just human kindness and support, why is it hard to understand?
As someone who hasn't had to do it, fighting cancers is in many ways probably a very solitary battle. There's family and friends there to support you, but it only really affects one person and maybe those closest to them. For the entire team, and a huge part of the school to show that everyone there is supporting her goes a long way to making that battle seem less individual. She can go into her treatments knowing that each and every one of these guys on the team has her in their thoughts and hopes she is successful.
100%, bang on. I’ll add that you actually described pain and malaise in general. People deal with chronic pain and are very isolated because, with pain, all you can do is whine; otherwise, the only way out is through. So, I think it’s good for us to take a moment and appreciate one another, our hardships and that we’re all isolated by our own difficulties. Showing love to people, holding a door open with a smile and saying “hi,” even the grumpy old man you don’t feel like doing it for… that grumpy old guy is probably dealing with more pain and loss than a smile can fix, but every little bit counts.
Hey I just want to say that no you’re not an asshole for not understanding this. Everyone is different. And personally—if I had leukemia, part of me thinks that I would be gravely depressed by this gesture. Not because the support was unappreciated, but simply because I wouldn’t be able to shake the poetic resemblance of the situation to a line of mourners laying flowers on my grave.
“Hello? I’m not dead” is how I think I would feel.
I may be in the minority for feeling that way, but it doesn’t make me an asshole. It would make me an asshole if I didn’t appreciate the effort and intention behind the gesture even if it’s shape doesn’t quite appeal to my senses.
Interesting song the drum line seems to be leading into, in that I'm fairly sure that's The Uruk Hai theme song from LOTR. Still it goes hard as hell and a great hype song for a football team.
There’s over 50 players on that football team and she doesn’t have a basket, what’s she gonna do, hold her arms out and accept a pile of roses while she’s overwhelmed with emotion?! At her feet, because she’s losing her mind with an overwhelming rush of emotions, and nobody gave her a wheelie cart to speed the roses away in.
This is not a stupid question, but lamenting the stupidity of the Reddit mob creates more negativity. I know you’re trying to help but the mob will never bend to this kind of explicit willfulness. Just surf the wave, homie.
I always shake my head at how downvote-happy these “feel good” subreddits can be, like if you don’t come here and say “omg so sweet” and you’re curious, people dogpile. This place is better when I stop worrying about things like mob downvote mentality, and just address the ideas. Like, answer the question instead of whining 😂
I did not mean the question in a mean way. I seriously thought it would be more beautiful to hand them and putting things at someone’s feet in my culture has a different meaning
Totally fair. I responded to the other person because they didn’t answer you, and tried to give you an answer to work with. To our North American culture, this is not an insult nor offending, or misplaced (it’s not only for funerals or something like that).
I just feel sorry for someone who watches something like this and finds fault with it, imagine how empty their life is, must be a mixture of jealousy and just hatred for anything decent.
These are teenagers, their brains haven’t been fully formed. Your assumption of their intent says more about you, and the presumed shittiness of your life… than some kids trying to do a kind thing
While I don’t doubt there might be a few players that have that “I don’t care” attitude, there will also be some players who will sympathize with her. Not everyone is as pessimistic as you are.
Yeah plus who cares, look at the girl she clearly appreciates the support. These clowns don't understand a gesture that seems fake to them might still be appreciated by the sick person.
You can still search a users comments/posts and see them all. Like, just a month ago they made a post in r/positivity, and now they're here spreading negativity for no reason. What a freakin clown.
This video is really old. I wonder how she is doing? I think she would be in her late 20's early 30's by now.
Edit: I am pretty sure I just found her instagram. The account is private but it looks like she is alive and is healthy!! Yay!
https://www.espn.com/espn/story/_/id/17490108/high-school-football-players-pay-tribute-cancer-stricken-cheerleader OG story from 2016
Thanks for looking into this. I hope she lives a long and healthy life.
This is probably the one time I want a story to be old so I can find the follow up story for it and (hopefully) have a happy ending
Saving Cheerleader Ashley
Glad to know she is happy, healthy, and alive.
Yeah they said in the video: “2016”. Thanks for the update and glad she’s doing well!
Nice to hear good news! Fuck cancer
Fuck cancer indeed. Just got my diagnosis yesterday. Fuck cancer
This comment hurts me as someone who was in hs in 2016
Zillennials rise up
Oh, wow, that was while I myself was in high school. I’m so so glad to hear she’s okay 🥹 At the very least that she is alive
As someone who graduated 2016 reading the “early 30’s” assumption hurt. It’s almost true but it still hurt.
People like you are the reason I continue coming to the hell that is reddit. (No other socials)
I tried to figure out if she died or survived the cancer but I couldn't find anything else on the girl. I hope she is ok, but after seeing some of her pictures, I'm not so sure...
Luckily it seems childhood leukemia survival rates are very good now.
The fact they weren’t just tossing them but gently placing them are her feet was extra sweet.
To the beat of the drum
And I'm counting the steps to the door of your heart.
As a non American, I never realized how many players are on a football team, those mfs kept coming.
53 players on an NFL team, but i don't really know that there is a limit to how many a high school team can suit up lol
they look like a small army
My school was so small it was tough to even field a full team, needed people playing offense and defense lol
Iron man football, baby! 💪
Which is fun for me to say, given I have Ehlers-Danlos and I received one catch before getting crushed, dislocating both arms, and realizing that I’m not meant for contact sports
I have two friends with Ehlers-Danlos so I can imagine what that might have been like, ouch!
I played both sides in high school at a very skall prep school. Made the transition to rugby so much easier.
I grew up in a single A school. We had other small towns around us that came to our school and we did co op with another nearby school cause they only had 2 or 3 kids who wanted to play football. With those additional players I think we had 17 or 18 on our entire team lol

There were over 100 guys on my HS football team. It was a big school.
Depends on the school.
Example my Highschool received extra funding cuz they had essentially 3 different campuses In one but we were designated as a bigger school for it. Our football team had 25ish kids on their team, one school we played had 70 kids

LOl to this comment
some really jaded losers in this thread, honestly so pathetic how some of you act.
hope she is recovered and living well!
Thanks for saving me time by not scrolling any further in the comments.
On the other hand, I thought to myself, “what shit could people possibly be slinging to a genuine and sweet moment like this?”
Now I’m about to sort by Controversial and do some doomin’. BRING ME THE DEPRAVITY!
"Nice gesture but definitely a function of pretty privilege."
It's reddit, what do you expect?
I hadn't read anything negative (closest were ones commenting on how many players are on a team -- ignoring the act, but that's still not negative).
Then I clicked one of the hidden comments: "Nice gesture but definitely a function of pretty privilege."
FFS.
That's a well-coached team. Teach these young men to have their eyes open to those around them. Kudos to this coaching staff and players.
News article says one of the players brought it up to the coach, per the coach. Kid was raised right
Couldn’t imagine how proud I’d be as a parent, coach, and teammate to hear one of your own bring this to the table.
Hell yeah.
This made me smile extra hard. I was diagnosed with Leukemia in late 2023, started treatment in Jan 2024 and went into remission later that year. Met a few other leukemia patients who had a rougher type than me. I felt fortunate. I hope this girl is well!
I need to read carefully. I was so confused as to why they were leaving oranges. Took me longer than I'd like to admit to realize it was orange roses.
Thank you - I was just about to reply to a comment of a survivor asking if oranges have a special significance for leukemia patients. FML.
Heh... or if they WERE oranges and she happened to be a fan of the Godfather films... YIKES!
I love that they refer to it as “honoring their comrade”. The whole thing is handled in a very respectful way without too much attention to her or in a way that feels overly pitying or anything like that that may have made her uncomfortable .
And that she's a comrade, not a cheerleader... They're all on the same team.
I hope she is alive and well
Lot of reddit moments in the comments lmao
Holy shit how big is that team?
Off topic, but was that the Isengard theme from Lord of the Rings? Lol
Basically, yes. How odd.
Came here for this.
At the very end I was like wait hol up
I thought it was the “deshi bashara” chant (as drum beats) from TDKR - thats what it sounds like to me which I thought was so sweet (if thats what it was lol)
(sounds a lot like the theme for Isengard as well after the second listen!)
At the very end of the video you can hear the horns starting for the Isengard Theme I think.
Yeah I’m on it again for the third time and I can picture the camera going into Isengard 😂 too good
sweet thought though nevertheless I will not deny the awesome intent behind this
Wtf how many players a football team has? 50?
At my University, there were 76 on the team.
This was 2016.
Is she alive? Did she defeat the leukemia?
I want to know!
This is too sweet! Good job, humans! ❤️
How many players are on a team?
I counted 54 players. From what I read from another comment, college and highschool teams don’t have a limit on the amount of players, but the limit is 53 for NFL teams.
Avg is about 50
i got a little teary after seeing this, especially after such sad news these days. keep up the good stuff, humans!!
How many players are on that team?!
That's a good fucking coach. Gonna make them boys into classy young men.
Good job, guys. This is a classy thing to do.
Love the Uruk hai march in the background playing haha
That's so sweet. And I love how the cheerleader friend hugs her too.
The kids are all right.
I don’t even like onions. Why am I cutting all these onions
Just because football players are big and strong doesn’t mean they’re all brutes. They have to be tough to be in that game sure, but they have just as much respect as anyone. Okay but couldn't the band play something less ominous? Sounded like she was about to be sacrificed to an old god.
Support means a lot!
This is, in fact, what it is all about.
I really do appreciate how they put them down with care <3
Bless bless
Of course it had to be performative.
Non American here. Significance of oranges?
While America funds a genocide. Meh. Thoughts and prayers.
am i an asshole for not understanding the point of this?
edit: lol this went from 20 upvotes to 16 down
Orange is the color of the leukemia awareness ribbon. Why they didn't hand it to her directly, not sure. Maybe they thought she'd be too emotional and would take too long accepting. It's a show of support though

Yes.
Maybe. I didn't know the symbolism of the orange, but it's a nice gesture regardless... The details just add to the thoughtfulness

She’d have probably appreciated money for the medical bills more than a bunch of crappy flowers.
You’re a mean one
The Eurotrash always comes out on the weekends. Smh..
Why at her feet? Why not hand them to her?
Edit: seriously guys? I asked not in a mean way. As in my culture making a lady pick things from the floor is not nice
Roses have thorns
Oh wow, in my country we take the thorns out when we make bouquets
So, you watched the video and didn't believe this was in America?
What does that have to do with anything?
what does your country have to do with anything?
Has to be reddit. A valid question. No bad intentions in the question. 66 downvotes
You guys are assholes.
Not everybody is from the US. Different countries / cultures have different points if view.
Just answer the question and feel good for bringing some knowledge to the world.
Why didn’t you answer the question?

No problems, friend :) wish you the best
Why not just hand it to her?! This looks so weird,
Because someone decided too - it doesn't seem like they really care.
Performative empathy.
Your life must be miserable
I just feel sorry for someone who watches something like this and finds fault with it, imagine how empty their life is, must be a mixture of jealousy and just hatred for anything decent.
Nah, I am good.
I just prefer when people do good to other, because they want to - as opposed to when they are told to.
These are teenagers, their brains haven’t been fully formed. Your assumption of their intent says more about you, and the presumed shittiness of your life… than some kids trying to do a kind thing
So when will you be good to others? Instead of making assumptions and all that?
While I don’t doubt there might be a few players that have that “I don’t care” attitude, there will also be some players who will sympathize with her. Not everyone is as pessimistic as you are.
Yeah plus who cares, look at the girl she clearly appreciates the support. These clowns don't understand a gesture that seems fake to them might still be appreciated by the sick person.
What a weird ass mf lol
Performative? It’s very possible some members of the team came up with a way to do this, or at least show her support while battling cancer
Tryna see if this is my old school

Fuck
Yourself
Nice gesture but definitely a function of pretty privilege.
Sorry the world has made you so jaded.
Another weird ass mf
I can see why you decided to private your account.
You can still search a users comments/posts and see them all. Like, just a month ago they made a post in r/positivity, and now they're here spreading negativity for no reason. What a freakin clown.
Hypocrisy, thy name is human.
Unfortunately. Yeah, I have been checking some folks out via the search. It's bonkers that a lot of people lack self awareness.

I want whatever you're smoking
Touching and sweet moment. However, I couldn't help wondering how many girls felt they wanted leukemia after that.
Ummm..probably none.
Hopefully none, not probably. I'm never surprised anymore by people's misguided and misinformed desires.
what
