A German Auxillary Cruiser, the "Komoran" lured her near her, then the Men on the German Cruiser unveiled their hidden Weapons and managed to cause a hit on the bridge in one of the first shots, further shots hit the Sydney so badly she sank after battle.
The Sydney did manage to hit the Germans so hard they had to scuttle their ship. No Soul on the Sydney survived the battle sadly.
Different Sydney. The one pictured is the first HMAS Sydney, which was a Town-class cruiser commissioned before World War 1. This is the ship that went up against the German raider Emden and reduced it to a flaming hulk on its own.
The ship you're referencing is the second HMAS Sydney, which was a Leander-class (Amphion subclass more specifically) cruiser. That was the ship that suffered the unfortunate and mysterious fate at the hands of the German Auxiliary cruiser Kormoran. Her sinking isn't actually that surprising; both ships were similarly heavily armed and lightly armoured, and Sydney gave up her advantages of more accurate gunnery by closing to point blank range before Kormoran opened fire. It was basically impossible for her to miss striking critical areas of Sydney.
Rules are for the guidance of wise men. Capt. Cayley was a wise man

IIRC the RAN wasn't allowed to treat civilians at the time so the captain enlisted her into the navy as a mascot.
It's a shame what happened to the ship and crew
What happened?!

Different HMAS Sydney. This one was decommisioned in 1928.
Then, thank you for correcting me

Enjoying the mental picture of Capt. Cayley and the crew turning and eagerly making best speed for their new mascot/recruit/little sister.
Thank you for this post.
Great story. Thanks for sharing
A father’s love is inspirational sometimes. Thank goodness the captain got it.
Wow. Rules are rules, I guess.
Very much a British Empire mindset at the time.
Is it just me, or does she look 50 in a tiny body?

Not sure where you're getting that idea, her father wasn't in command of the ship.
Shit. You are right. I am wrong. Kudos
