Knife magnetic strips are great. Better than bulky blocks (that are not just horrible but impossible to clean) and better than throwing into utensil drawer.
It's just a strip of magnet that's stuck to the wall (glued, nailed, etc.) And you can stick the blade of your knife to it so that your knives are magnetically stuck onto the wall.
I’ve always wondered if that made the edge sharp because the edge would be pulled in a straight line towards the magnet or if it would mean your blade is getting 2x wear
I've never thought about that! I have wondered if it could warp the metal over time if the magnet is strong enough? If it's a thin blade and it's used a lot, will it be wonky after a while if it's always put up on the same side?
For mine im just talking about how the metal every time you shave it down to have a new set of sharp bits instead of some no sharp sections that broke off. Well if you fold metal back and forth over and over it’ll break off. Magnets count as a constant pulling. Yet that should leave something like how it is under tension. While something under tension isn’t broken it’s susceptible to being snapped from additional force.
That's true. I bet the magnets do cause some damage after extended use, even if it's just to the sharp edge of the knife. And especially to the knives with improperly folded metals.
They don't on almost all knives, the sharp edge doesn't contact the magnet, it's the thicker material above that does.
There is obvious wear on some of my knives from magnet strips but it's nowhere near the blade edge.
If you angled them out kind of awkwardly you would pull it along the edge, for the answer to that, I have some spare magnet strips and knives I don't mind having to repair to see which injures which.
I can have the thick end be the place it make contact.
Doesn’t change even being fully parallel to a strip magnet would still have the edge being affected by the magnet.
while the magnetic field isn’t usually super strong the whole blade is magnetized. While that effect is not super strong. You can stick other magnetic metal to it and it has a reduced pull, but will default to the stronger field.
It’s just like imagine a pulling a bow string back for hours and then letting it go. Dry firing is bad for a bow. That’s how I see the force on the edge. Yet the metallic bonds should be strong for the knife too. So maybe they just fold like when a knife becomes dull.
Right?? I swear my fingers are sticks of butter in finger form, and my limbs are nothing more than battering rams 🤣 Knives live in a drawer or in the back corner of the counter so they can't fly off into the nether or another person!
Your joke was extremely niche and hasn't been common knowledge in years. So assuming people would know or remember what you're referring to is kinda dumb.
That's why "/s" exists, you know. For context and less-obvious jokes.
Yeah. I like the idea of a wooden one painted but really books? No. Also makes me feel bad for the poor books! Not being read. Just smashed to hold knives.
Even putting my knives in blade side up, my knife block gets shredded by my knives. I can only imagine the little lint bits that would shave off every time you slide a sharp edge in.
Can confirm: I live in the desert and always let my knives fully dry before putting them away and was surprised by all the people saying these would grow mold
I got my boyfriend a really nice knife block complete with knives for Christmas last year, and he still uses the shitty ones in the drawer because he said the ones I got were”too nice”. 😭 so unbiassed because I apparently have a decorative knife block in my house, but there is a possibility that this one is not actually being used. Might just be there for the ✨ aesthetics ✨
Sooo I live in a shared flat and we actually have one book as a knife block. It's not mouldy, and works fairly well, no pieces of paper shaving off etc.. it's a bit deformed after 5 years and we wanna switch it out, but it's definitely not as catastrophic as people in this thread make it out to be.
Weird choice for a bookmark, It looks cool for a killer thriller book but stills looks kinda uncomftable to go around with It, also way are the books tied Up
A wooden block painted to look like books would be adorable. But real books? Yuck.
In all fairness, when is the last time anyone cleaned the slots of their knive block?
My main gripe with this idea is that it would probably not last long before the pages get squished.
That's fair. Those are kinda gross too. Especially when I see them at the thrift store. That's why I use a magnetic strip for my knives.

In drawer blocks are pretty great for your less frequently used knives though.
How do magnetic strips work?

That’s if it was like an extra strong magnet.

Magnetisms pull you can’t see it.
I can have the thick end be the place it make contact.

Dude. There are so many things wrong with this thought process.
Clearly you know, as all you said was this is wrong.
Rolling or bending is one of the 3 ways a knife can go dull.
Magnetism could most certainly do this, but it could also pull the ones bent from the opposite side to all on the same side.
Just google a picture of one of these things. I think you might be imaging it wrong
There are knife forums that have arguments about this.
I don’t need to be right. I just know it’s possible depending on how low quality the metal or thin high quality vs how strong the magnet is
My clumsy ass would knock one off AT LEAST once… and that’s risky with, you know, sharp things.
Right?? I swear my fingers are sticks of butter in finger form, and my limbs are nothing more than battering rams 🤣 Knives live in a drawer or in the back corner of the counter so they can't fly off into the nether or another person!
You should really work on this. Being an uncoordinated pain in the ass is not a flex. Jesus Christ.
At least it's better than being an unnecessary asshole?
woosh
Whoosh me too, because I don't get the joke. I also thought you were serious.

That was interesting! Thanks.
I vaguely remember this being a thing! Thank you for the explanation ☺️
You're welcome!
Now head out to the thrift store and buy an old TV and go nuts!
What's the joke?

Thanks for the detailed info, I had no idea. Very interesting!
You're welcome!
You are either too young to be aware or have spent your time since 2005 ish doing much more worthwhile things with your time LOL

I clean mine, and my next one is going to clamshell so it's easier. Now that I've seen this it may also be literary-themed.
Paper will get a lot dirtier than wood... any grease will soak right through.
You're right, but paper or wood, either way it's not getting cleaned.
There’s a difference between hardwood grain and soft paper. Hardwood grain isn’t going to decay and start growing mold as quickly as books will
You're about to find out! 🤣🤣🤣
Yeah. I like the idea of a wooden one painted but really books? No. Also makes me feel bad for the poor books! Not being read. Just smashed to hold knives.
Yeah, the pages are gonna be destroyed and it will look bad really quickly
It running the books
That’s my problem. I was raised to have respect for books.
This is one of those decoration ideas that only works for photos. Pinterest is full of stuff like this.
And ai
Based on the knife handles, this person clearly doesn’t cook anyway. It’s all just gathering dust.
that’s actually ridiculous
Any moisture on those knives and it’s mold
Even putting my knives in blade side up, my knife block gets shredded by my knives. I can only imagine the little lint bits that would shave off every time you slide a sharp edge in.
Imagine being Viscount Morley and peeping from beyond the grave only to see your magnum opus publication being used as Ashley’s knife block.
You mean Ashleigh's knife block!
If you lived in a desert where the air is always thirsty and you never put them away damp?
Might be about the same amount of gross as a block since those can't get cleaned inside either.
Can confirm: I live in the desert and always let my knives fully dry before putting them away and was surprised by all the people saying these would grow mold

Okay a while back i switched to a clear knife block and I am never going back
Sooo I live in a shared flat and we actually have one book as a knife block. It's not mouldy, and works fairly well, no pieces of paper shaving off etc.. it's a bit deformed after 5 years and we wanna switch it out, but it's definitely not as catastrophic as people in this thread make it out to be.
My first thot was
Weird choice for a bookmark, It looks cool for a killer thriller book but stills looks kinda uncomftable to go around with It, also way are the books tied Up
Then i realice is a knife holder
The pages get messed up really quick too
r/bookmarks
I only use first editions
I don’t see the problem if you CLEAN your knifes after using and then.. let them DRY.. even using a towel????
Like, only one of those knives isn't junk. The books are probably worth more than the rest of them.
The pages would probably be shredded apart before they can get moldy anyway.
This belongs in r/TIHI
Seems like a good way to get tetanus no?
Elaborate on that thought.
