Ok so there’s this dude called the pail king and he comes to this place called hollownest and he is so cool that the civilization abandons their old god (the radiance) and worships him instead.
The pale king has foresight so he knows the radiance is going to fight back. He also knows that there is another deity that is the enemy of the radiance (the void) so he has a bunch of kids with a tree and tosses the eggs into the abyss (where the void lives) so one of the kids can be filled with void and become the prison for the radiance.
But this isn’t enough he also makes a bond on the chosen child (the hollow knight) using three dreamers (monomon the teacher,the watcher and herra the beast) who will be put into comas and do something somehow.
One of the dreamers, Hera the beast, will only agree to become a dreamer if the pail king has a child with her because she wants someone to carry her legacy or something. Also because the pail king is basically (if not literally I can’t remember) a god so she wants the kid to be strong. The kid resulting is hornet.
In the game you play as one of the children of the pail king who was not chosen but somehow found a way out of the abyss. You kill all of the dreamers and either trap the voices or destroy it

Strong white bug marry other white bug but she's a tree, then took over the kingdom and almost kill lämp. Lämp get mad and mind-control bugs. Strong white bug says oh no and creates billions of baby white bugs to throw into black lake of horrors to make it "hollow." One ascends and traps lämp. It no work because poor hollow bug wasn't actually hollow. A simp, a jellyfish, and spooky spider sacrifice themselves to seal hollow bug. It still no work even though spooky spider had baby shaw with strong white bug. Then you come along and either trap lämp or destroy lämp for good by becoming a god of pure darkness.
Okay so there's a kingdom called Hallownest, and the king of Hallownest is called the Pale King, who died after making thousands of vessels to trap the Radiance. The Radiance was the original monarch before the Pale King stole her kingdom, and now she's trying to infect the people of Hallownest as revenge.
Only two vessels actually made the cut, The Hollow Knight, who eventually had a mind to think, making him not truly Hollow, and The Knight, or The Vessel (he doesn't have a confirmed name other than the nickname Ghost, or Shade Lord).
Essentially, you go through the now fallen kingdom of Hallownest, preparing yourself for the ultimate showdown against The Hollow Knight to ultimately seal away the infection, presumably for good, as The Vessel seems to be a truly Hollow being, even though there are some points of evidence pointing to that not being the case.
It's a really difficult game for newcomers to the series, and you can expect a lot of walking between new areas and old areas if you want to see everything this game has to offer.
Spoiler free version - what the game is actually about is something you learn as you play it. Initially, you go into the cave and start exploring, killing any enemies you see. The story is really deep and you learn it as you go.
A King moves to a new land and builds a Kingdom, a moth tribe who was living there, now under new rule, start forgetting their God. This God becomes angry at being forgotten, and starts infecting the minds of the Kingdoms citizens through their dreams.
The King realizes that because the God infects dreams, he could trap the God in a mind of a dreamless creature. So he experiments with a substance devoid of anything, appropriately named "Void". He creates many hollow children using the void and trains one to take on this God in its hollow mind and then seal that child away so the God can never get out.
To seal this child away, the King enlists the help of 3 individuals, later called "dreamers" to agree to sleep for eternity, their rest creating the seal. But against all odds, this supposedly hollow child was not truly hollow. It's love for its father and its kingdom and its want to save it ironically doomed them.
As it succumbs to the God's infection itself, it cries out and calls for the help of its discarded (similarly void-made) siblings, one returns and breaks the seals, awakening the dreamers and finding a way to go into the mind of the sealed void-made child to fight the God directly, defeating it once and for all and ridding the Kingdom of the infection.
Hivemind entity infecting kingdom becuase the king made a moth religion forget. Emotionless vessels were made to contain the hivemind because hollow creatures could contain it. The selected vessel “The hollow knight” actually had one emotion to make his father proud. Because of that the infection still won. The player is a truly empty vessel that can seal the hivemind or destroy it

There were a lot of bugs. Like normal IRL bugs, they're not intelligent. They worship a godess of light and dreams (Radiance) since bugs are attracted to light. Then other god comes from outside (Pale King) with a brighter light that gives bugs sapience, which makes them create a whole bug kingdom called Hallownest with the Pale King as the king. In return, bugs start worshipping him. There is also another godess that's living in the same place (White Lady) and she becomes the Queen when the Pale King starts ruling. As the bugs are worshipping the Pale King, the Radiance is forgotten. But then some random dude finds a statue of Radiance and remembers her. As she's a godess of dreams, she can infect people's minds to start worshipping her again, with the people becoming zombies in the process. Pale King obviously doesn't like having his whole kingdom turn into zombies, so he comes up with a plan to stop her from doing that. As he isn't able to just kill her (Radiance lives in another realm which isn't accesible to the Pale King, she's also a super powerful god), he comes up with the idea of locking her up in the mind of a creature with no emotions or feelings whatsoever. To accomplish this, he makes a lot of kids with the Queen and throws them into the void (a deadly substance that exists in the bottom of the world and is formed through all the regrets of the people around the world) in hopes that at least one of them has a completely hollow mind. These kids are called "vessels" as their purpose is to hold the Radiance in their hollow minds. One of them makes it outside of the Abyss (where the void is located) and the Pale King starts his plan. He calls this chosen vessel "the Hollow Knight". He starts training the vessel to a perfect shape so it can hold the Radiance in its mind, but in the process he accidentally makes the vessel develop an emotional bond with him. He goes on with the plan anyway and after some time the containment of Radiance starts failing as the vessel's mind isn't completely hollow due to it loving its father. So yeah the plan just fails horribly.
When the game starts, you are one of these vessels that were born in the Abyss and you managed to escape after the Hollow Knight was chosen as the right vessel. Your vessel is wandering around the world, but for unknown reasons (there are some theories) it comes back to Hallownest. The rest of the story is the game you play.
