Indian isn't racist inherently. Labeling every tribe or peoples "native American" is racist. Labeling every tribe Indian is racist unless that tribe says so.
You can't toss them all in a bucket and say "this is what they want." No they didn't consent. Indian was used wrongly, but it does a decent job as it explains people on these 2 continents north and south America, and the Caribbean, and pacific islands, and arctic peoples, and Patagonia peoples.
Was it the wrong word? Yep. But a few white people choosing to change the name doesn't make it better. Alot of tribes still use Indian because it just works to describe thousands of entirely different peoples; each with their own customs, practices, religions, ways of life, and regions. Indian doesn't differentiate between the tribes it just blankets them all whilst keeping each tribe and or peoples individual.
That's ike going to asia and saying all are "native Chinese" that is horribly reductive. Asian works. Heck oriental also works. If you want to know what is or isn't racist just ask japan. They will give it to you straight.
