Like the Easter Rising and the Irish War of Independence never happened
I think Ireland would have just become another constituent country (duh), but the closest we would have got to the Idea of an independent Ireland is like the million seperatist movements we have in the UK, there would have been some SNP or Plaid Crymu clone but for Ireland instead.
I think this very much depends on how Ireland remains in the UK, if home rule was achieved before the 1860s then maybe Ireland would be the same as Scotland today.
But if the ‘Irish question’ was ignore until after 1920 then we’d just be seeing a different Troubles
I think for that to happen you would need the Great Famine not to happen
I don’t think you’re going far enough back
I think the Protestant Ascendancy and the manner in which Cromwell prosecuted his war in Ireland are where many of these issues flow from
But then you’ve got to go further back to just general English attitudes to Ireland which is partially why Cromwell et al felt able to be so brutal when they weren’t so bad against fellow English enemies
Yup, the Elizabethan attacks were horribly brutal and involved extensive ethnic cleansing and mass murder of entire Irish communities (including children). I think it was Chichester who lined his garden with the skulls of the Irish he had murdered. He led the plantation of Ulster in the late 16th, early 17th century.
Yikes TIL.
They may still be having the troubles there.
they wouldnt be in the EU... or maybe the UK still would be?
probably due to the amount of Pro-EU Irish people could tip the vote to the remain side's favour
There was a rebellion against English/British oppression every generation or so for centuries. I doubt that that would have stopped because one of them didn't happen. The circumstances that led to those rebellions wouldn't suddenly disappear so the rebellion would just be delayed and happen at a later point. There is a possibility that home rule might have prevented it but realistically most of the leadership wanted independence and saw or came to see HR as a stepping stone.
A more likely alternative is that the UK would be forced to give Ireland their independence once WW2 was over. They hung onto the NE only with an initial large majority, gerrymandering etc. Highly unlikely that a post WW2 UK could hold onto Ireland.
I know I didnt specify it but my question if if Ireland remained part of the UK til the MODERN DAY, sorry for not specifying earlier lol
I meant to specify if they remained in the UK til the modern day, like what if they were the big, 4th constituent country of the UK
